Cherry City Roller Derby (CCRD) is a flat track roller derby league based in Salem, Oregon and a 501c Non-Profit Organization. Cherry City is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). [1]
Cherry City began as Cherry City Derby Girls in 2009, with the prompting of Ryan Rogers of Culture Shock of Salem. [2] There were no tryouts initially and over 100 women signed up for the league. The first official practice occurred on April 6, 2009. [3] The league's formal end-of-season event, the Black and Red Ball, commemorates this event in April each year.
By March 2010, Cherry City was attracting more than 3,000 fans to its bouts, [4] while the team's skaters ranged from 18 to over 50 years old. [5] CCRD has also hosted a junior roller derby program, the Cherry Blossoms, since 2012. This is open to all genders, ages 7 to 18. [6] [7]
The league was accepted onto the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice Program in July 2010, [8] and became a full member of the WFTDA in December 2012. [9] Cherry City played their first WFTDA sanctioned game on March 30, 2013, defeating the Sick Town Derby Dames 233-158. In September 2013, Cherry City hosted a WFTDA Division 1 Playoff, [10] and was featured as "League of the Month" for October. [11]
In 2016, the league rebranded as Cherry City Roller Derby. [12] The change was aimed to be more gender-inclusive to non-cisgender members and volunteers. This also reflected a change in the junior program which now began to allow all genders.
At the end of Season 9 in May 2018, CCRD retired the four existing home teams: Dolls of Anarchy, Thrill Kill Kittens, Rydell Belles, and Panty Raiders. This was in order to facilitate a restructure for the following season. Season 10 opened with three newly-formed teams in September 2018: 8-Wheel Assassins, Boneyard Brawlers, and Capital Punishers. In 2019, Capital Punishers changed their name to Renegades. [13] 8-Wheel Assassins is a travel team, competing against teams from other WFTDA leagues. The Boneyard Brawlers (BYB) compete regionally, and Renegades compete on a strictly local level.

Though skating members pay for their membership, many people involved in the CCRD community do not. Often these hard working affiliates of the CCRD league are volunteers that help with Bout Production. These affiliates enable CCRD to maintain quality bout productions while lowering the overhead costs of these events. Without the help of the community and their volunteers, CCRD would not be able to thrive as it does today. Because of this, CCRD is always extremely grateful for the volunteers that have come from the community.

There are six charities that are affiliated with CCRD currently. These charities receive 100% of the proceeds from raffle tickets that are sold during roller derby bouts hosted by CCRD. Additionally, CCRD will participate in events as volunteers with these charities throughout the year.
CCRD is also named as a caretaker in the Adopt a Street program for Salem, Oregon.
Cherry City Roller Derby is responsible for a section of D Street in Salem, Oregon running from 5th street to 20th street. The quarterly event they hold is called the "D Street Clean-Up" by CCRD members. Adult and junior skaters, and CCRD affiliates can be seen on this stretch of street periodically throughout the year in orange vests cleaning the neighborhood.
Rat City Roller Derby is a women's flat-track roller derby league in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 2004 as Rat City Rollergirls, LLC, the league has incorporated alternative cultural influences, and has inspired and mentored other leagues. Rat City is a founding member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), and has achieved success on the WFTDA stage, qualifying for WFTDA Playoffs every season, including a second-place finish in the 2007 WFTDA Championships.
Minnesota Roller Derby (MNRD) is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in the United States. Founded in August 2004 as Minnesota RollerGirls by the Donnelly sisters, MNRD was one of the first 30 members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) by early 2006. Today the league has over 80 skaters playing on four home teams as well as their All-Star team, which has qualified for WFTDA Playoffs every year since its inception.

Gotham Roller Derby is a flat track roller derby league based in New York City, New York. Founded in late 2003, Gotham is the first flat track roller derby league in the metropolitan New York area and a founding member league of the sport's governing body, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Gotham is one of the preeminent leagues in roller derby, having won five WFTDA Championships. Boston Roller Derby, (BRD), is a flat-track roller derby league based in Boston, Massachusetts. The league was founded as Boston Derby Dames in May 2005, and is a founding member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The league's all-star team, the Boston Massacre, was one of the top 25 WFTDA Division 1 teams in the world through most of the duration of the divisional ranking system introduced in early 2013, and as of December 31, 2015, the Massacre was ranked at 21. Boston won the WFTDA Division 2 Championship in 2017 and the North America East Continental Cup in 2018.
Rocket City Roller Derby is a women's flat track roller derby league located in Huntsville, Alabama. Founded in December 2004 as Dixie Derby Girls, the league is a charter member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
Toronto Roller Derby (ToRD), is a women's flat-track roller derby league in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Formed in 2006, the league started play in 2007, and held its tenth season in 2016. Operated and managed by its skaters and members, ToRD has four house teams, one rookie travel team, and one WFTDA charter travel team. Since 2011, the league has operated out of a space in Downsview Park, but announced in January 2015 that they were in search of a new home. They have since moved to another space near Downsview Park.
Maine Roller Derby (MRD) is Maine’s first women’s flat track roller derby league, which is a member league of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), joining in December 2007.
The Victorian Roller Derby League is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Melbourne, in the Australian state of Victoria. Founded in 2007, the VRDL contains two home teams, the Dead Ringer Rosies and the Toxic Avengers, and also three travel teams, the VRDL All Stars, the Bees, Notorious V.I.Cs and Demons, who compete in interleague competitions within Australia and internationally. VDRL is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), having gained membership in December 2011. In November 2017, VRDL became the first non-American team to win the WFTDA Championships. Since April 2017, VRDL is the top-ranked team in the WFTDA, following Gotham's run at the top since January 2013.
Lava City Roller Dolls (LCRD) is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Bend, Oregon. Founded in 2006, the league currently consists of two mixed teams which compete against teams from other leagues, and an affiliated junior roller derby team for girls and boys aged 10-17. Lava City is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
Sonoma County Roller Derby is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Santa Rosa, California. The league (SCRD) has around 70 active members who not only skate in bouts, but participate in community building events throughout the county. Sonoma County Roller Derby is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The All-Stars are SCRD's WFTDA level travel team; the All-Stars skate against other A level teams for international rankings. The league also has a mixed level travel team, the Growlers, and two home teams: the Wine Country Wreckers and North Bay Bruisers.
