The Portland Fire was a professional basketball team in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) based in Portland, Oregon that joined the league in 2000 as the counterpart to the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. They played their games at the Rose Garden Arena. The team folded after the 2002 season, after just three seasons in the league. They were the only WNBA team that had never made the playoffs.

The IBL also sometimes featured teams from China and Japan which temporarily relocated to the United States for the IBL season. The IBL season typically ran from the end of March through July.

The Arizona Flame, formerly the Phoenix Flame and the Scottsdale Flame, were an International Basketball League (IBL) team based in Casa Grande, Arizona. The team played home games at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum and on the campus of Grand Canyon University. The Flame was the Phoenix's first minor league basketball team since the Phoenix Eclipse folded after the 2001–02 American Basketball Association season. It was owned by Stephen Moss-Kelley, professional basketball player and former IBL all-star. When the team was announced in June 2006, the Flame named their home venue as North Phoenix Baptist Church. By October 2006, the Arizona Republic listed Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum as the team's home venue. Tickets for the Flame's opening season were eight dollars for adults and four dollars for children. Maury "Mo" Samilton was the team's head coach in 2007.
The Tacoma Thunder were an International Basketball League team based in Tacoma, Washington. The Tacoma Jets were named the Tacoma Thunder for their first two campaigns, but were renamed in the off-season after an ownership change to the Jets. The team started as the Portland Thunder, joining the AFL in 2014 as an expansion team along with the Los Angeles Kiss. The team played their home games at the Moda Center. They were known as the Thunder until the franchise went under league ownership in 2016 and became the Steel.
Terry W. Emmert is an American businessman, entrepreneur and sports franchise owner from Clackamas, Oregon, a suburb of Portland. He is the founder and owner of Emmert International, an engineering and transport service company, the International Basketball League's Portland Chinooks and the Portland Thunder professional Arena Football League team. He has two children, Terry Michael Emmert, who is vice president of Emmert International, and Christine Vessey, the Vice President of Multrec Corporation.
