Early life

Silpa was born in Los Angeles, California. He began his career as a member of The Groundlings, an improv and sketch comedy troupe based in Los Angeles. [2] He won over $20K at age 14 in December 1980 on a kids' week episode of Card Sharks, [3] and later appeared on a College Week of Scrabble, Shop Til You Drop, and Hollywood Showdown.

Career

Silpa is perhaps best known on the Internet for his David Blaine street magic parodies. [4] [5] In these parodies, Silpa masquerades as an intentionally low-quality likeness of the world-renowned magician. Actors Mikey Day and Michael Naughton also appear in these parodies, as best friends Evan and Peter whom Silpa terrorizes with his "magic". [4] He is also known for the "Two Old Queens Who've Just a Minute to Catch Up" viral video series created and performed by Silpa and Drew Droege.

He has had recurring roles on the TV shows "All Rise", "Grey's Anatomy", "Nobodies", "Desperate Housewives", "Gilmore Girls", and "In Plain Sight". Silpa was also a series regular on NBC's The Rerun Show. [6]

Silpa has had guest star roles in sitcoms such as "Will & Grace", 2 Broke Girls , [6] "The Middle", "Reno 911", and Curb Your Enthusiasm . [6] Although known for a more mature sense of humor, Silpa also acts in television shows that are for a younger audience such as I'm In the Band , [6] on Disney XD and iCarly on Nickelodeon. Silpa also plays more serious roles like the character Deputy Everhardt in the television drama, In Plain Sight . [6]

As for big screen appearances, one of Silpa's more notable characters is a flight attendant named Steve in the 2011 comedy film, Bridesmaids . [6] He also appeared in "Spy", "The Heat", "The Way Out", "Happytime Murders", [6] "Welcome to Me", "Unforgettable", and "The Boss". [6]

He created, wrote, and produced (with Jim Cashman) the FOX pilot "Amy's Brother" starring Michael Urie and Annie Mumolo. Silpa has also been nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for his work on Saturday Night Live . [6]

An improvised situation comedy is a television program in which there is no definite script for the actors and actresses. Rather, the actors/actresses use the process of retroscripting in which there are rough outlines of themes and stories, but the dialogue is up for the actors/actresses to improvise. Because of the improvised fashion, these sitcoms are usually shot by handheld camera in a documentary-type style. Usually these shows have no laugh tracks, predetermined entrances, or punchlines. Such improvised sitcoms include Curb Your Enthusiasm, Home Movies and Reno 911!. In addition to these, there are many scripted shows that will, after getting principal photography, let the actors do a couple of improv takes, and often some of the best jokes that make it on the show will come from these takes. Notable examples of this would be the US version The Office or Parks and Recreation and the British show The Thick of It.
