The Mauritania Railway is the national railway of Mauritania. Construction of the line began in 1960,with it opening in 1963. It consists of a single,704-kilometre (437 mi) railway line linking the iron mining centre of Zouérat with the port of Nouadhibou,via Fderik and Choum. The state agency Sociéténationale industrielle et minière (SNIM) controls the railway line.
The Oulad Bou Sbaa is a Chorfa/Zaouia tribe,who claim descent from Abu Sib'a,the Idrissid 16th century tribal chief. They live in Morocco,Western Sahara and Mauritania,with members of the tribe holding different nationalities depending on their residence and upbringing. In the 19th and 20th century,the tribe's influence in its core areas of southern Spanish Sahara was diminished and permanently weakened following defeat in bloody battles against the Reguibat tribal confederations,which were then rapidly asserting their influence over these areas. Speakers of Hassaniya Arabic,they were nomadic (Bedouin),and herded camels in today's Western Sahara and Mauritania.
Mauritanian People's Party was the sole legal party of Mauritania from 1961 to 1978. It was headed by President Moktar Ould Daddah.
Ahmed Ould Daddah is a Mauritanian economist and a politician. He is a half-brother of Moktar Ould Daddah,the first President of Mauritania,and belongs to the Marabout Ouled Birri tribe. He is currently the President of the Rally of Democratic Forces (RFD) and was designated as the official leader of the opposition following the 2007 presidential election,in which he placed second.
Cheikh El Avia Ould Mohamed Khouna is a Mauritanian political figure. He was the 7th Prime Minister of Mauritania from January 2,1996,to December 18,1997,Minister of Foreign Affairs from July 12,1998,to November 16,1998,and Prime Minister again from November 16,1998,to July 6,2003,under President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya;later,he briefly served as Minister of Foreign Affairs again in 2008.
The Central Bank of Mauritania is the central bank of Mauritania,in northwest Africa. The bank is located in the capital Nouakchott,just south of the Presidential palace. Its current Governor is Mohamed Lemine Ould Dhehby.
Mohamed Lemine Ould Guig is a Mauritanian academic and political figure. He was the 8th Prime Minister of Mauritania from December 18,1997 to November 16,1998. Guig was the Prime Minister between stints by Cheikh El Avia Ould Mohamed Khouna.
Parliamentary elections were held in Mauritania on 17 May 1959. The result was a victory for the Mauritanian Regroupment Party,which was the only party to contest the elections,thereby winning all 40 seats in the National Assembly. Voter turnout was 90.3%.
Presidential elections were held for the first time in Mauritania on 20 August 1961 to elect the President for the next five years. Moktar Ould Daddah,who had been acting head of state since independence from France in 1960 was the only candidate,and was elected unopposed. Although he was a member of the ruling Mauritanian Regroupment Party,his candidacy was also supported by the Mauritanian National Union. Voter turnout was 94%.
The Union for the Republic was a political party in Mauritania. The party was formed in 5 May 2009 by Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz after he resigned from the military,to run for President of Mauritania. Aziz resigned as chairman of the party on 2 August 2009 after winning the presidential election,as the President of Mauritania cannot be a member of any party. The party also won 13 of the 17 seats up for re-election to the Mauritanian Senate in 2009,giving the UPR control of a total of 38 of the 53 Senate seats.
Mauritanian Regroupment Party was a political party in Mauritania from 1958 to 1961. Although nominally led by party President Sidi el-Mokhtar N'Diaye,it was de facto headed by Moktar Ould Daddah.
Mauritanian National Renaissance Party was an Arab nationalist political party in Mauritania from 1958 to 1961. It was led by Ahmed Baba Miské.
Elections to the French National Assembly were held in Mauritania on 17 June 1951. Mauritania had one seat in the Assembly,which was won by Sidi el-Mokhtar N'Diaye,a member of the Mauritanian Progressive Union. Her time as a minister ended when Daddah's government was overthrown by a military coup.
The second government of Mohamed Ould Bilal was the 17th government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania,in office between 1 April 2022 and 3 July 2023. It was a coalition between the Union for the Republic,which rebranded itself as El Insaf in July 2022,and the Union for Democracy and Progress,whose leader Naha Mint Mouknass is the only member representing the party.
The raid on Nouakchott in June 1976 was a significant military operation carried out by the Polisario Front,a Western Saharan guerrilla group,against the Mauritanian capital,Nouakchott. Led by their leader El-Ouali Mustapha Sayed,the Polisario forces aimed to overthrow the regime of President Moktar Ould Daddah.
