Dr. Mohamed Rela is an Indian surgeon. He is known for his expertise in liver transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery. He is considered one of the world's best liver transplant surgeons. He made his name in the Guinness Book of Records for performing a liver transplantation on a 5-day-old baby.
He is the chairman and director of Dr Rela Hospital, India and the Professor of Liver Surgery and Transplantation, at the King's College Hospital, London. [1]
Prof. Mohamed Rela was born in Kiliyanur village near Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu, India. His parents are Haji S A Shamsudin and Hasma Beevi. He was a student of the Besant Theosophical High School School, Adyar Chennai and received his MBBS (in 1980) and MS degree from the Stanley Medical College, Chennai.
He later went to the United Kingdom in 1986, to receive another MS from Edinburgh and become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1988.
Prof. Mohamed Rela worked in various hospitals in UK before joining London's King's College [ citation needed ] Hospital in 1991, where he continues to be the Professor of liver surgery. Niche areas of liver transplantation like auxiliary transplantation, split liver transplantation techniques and live donor liver transplantation were pioneered by him at the King's College for the world to emulate, and scores of patients to benefit.[ citation needed ]
In a career over 3 decades, Prof. Rela has performed over 6000 liver transplants, including one on a five-day-old baby, earning him an entry into the Guinness Book of Records in 2000. [2] [3] [4]
Prof. Rela currently works in India, He has started his own institution Dr.Rela Institute & Medical Centre - Hospital in Chrompet, Chennai, India in 2018 and Has performed over 1200 liver transplantation, where he set up a successful Living Donor Liver Transplant program performing over 300 liver transplants a each year, He has performed over a 3000 liver transplants only in the state of Tamilnadu, India. He was also the catalyst in starting liver transplants in tier 2 cities in Tamil Nadu, providing access to such high end medical facilities even to people from far flung places. [1]
Dr.Rela has a special interest in pediatric liver transplantation and has performed a liver transplantation for a 42 days old child which was recorded in India book of records and in 2022 Dr.Rela Institute celebrated the successful completion of 500 pediatric liver transplantations in Chennai.[ citation needed ] Prof.Rela has also performed Asia's youngest small bowel transplantation, the record was awarded by Asia book of records in 2021.
In 2021, Dr.Rela Institute has started robotic surgery program, Since then Dr.Rela has performed over 200 robotic donor surgeries and complex robotic HPB surgeries robotically. Rela is also a hepatobiliary surgeon, performing Whipple's surgery for pancreatic cancer, liver resections for Cholangiocarcinoma and HCC resection in Cirrhotic patients.[ citation needed ]
His research interest is in the field of clinical liver transplantation, translational studies into liver regeneration and liver preservation. He has over 600 publications in peer-reviewed journals. [5]
Further he has been honoured with Doctorate of Science degrees from three universities, recognising his service to healthcare. With a focus on a strong, dedicated yet ethical concept of healthcare, Prof. Rela has now ventured into an enterprise, setting up a new healthcare facility, Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre. [6]
The new centre, an International Medical facility is a quaternary care hospital dedicated to fostering and responding to the needs of a diverse set of patients. The hospital is committed to being an internationally significant health care system with the state-of- the- art infrastructure facilities, functioning in a sprawling area of 36 acres of land located in Chromepet, Chennai, India.
With the facility of 450 beds inclusive of 130 critical care beds, 14 operating rooms, contemporary reference laboratories and radiology services. The 'Master Class in Liver Disease' (MCLD) series was envisaged by Prof. Rela as a means to deliver high-quality teaching in liver disease and transplantation.
Since its first edition in 2011, it has quickly established itself as one of the most popular scientific meetings in the field in the Indian sub-continent. Each edition is planned as a single theme conference with participation of national & international experts. Previous editions have dealt with topics such as the pathological basis of liver disease, hepatobiliary tumours, paediatric liver diseases, peri-operative care of the liver recipient, living donor liver transplantation, and acute liver failure. Organ transplantation is a medical procedure in which an organ is removed from one body and placed in the body of a recipient, to replace a damaged or missing organ. The donor and recipient may be at the same location, or organs may be transported from a donor site to another location. Organs and/or tissues that are transplanted within the same person's body are called autografts. Transplants that are recently performed between two subjects of the same species are called allografts. Allografts can either be from a living or cadaveric source.

Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin is an Indian surgeon and the Chief Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon & Chairman of the Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, Medanta-The Medicity. Known for his work in the field of liver transplantation, Soin also runs the Liver Transplant institute at the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai. He has performed more than 3500 living donor liver transplants in India, which is the highest in the country, and the second-highest in the world.
Ramakanta Panda, MCh, is the chief consultant for cardiovascular thoracic surgery and the group CEO of the Asian Heart Institute, a speciality cardiac care hospital under the aegis of Asian Hospitals, at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai, India. In 2002, he set up the Asian Heart Institute in India. Panda has performed about 28,000 successful cardiac surgeries as of 2022, including over 1,900 redo bypass surgeries. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2010 by the Government of India. Known as "the man with the safest hands".
Jose Chacko Periappuram is an Indian cardiac surgeon and medical writer who performed the first successful heart transplant in the state of Kerala, India, as well as the first successful heart retransplant in the country. His other achievements include the first beating heart, awake bypass and total arterial revascularization surgeries in the state. Sahariah is credited with more than 3000 renal transplantations, which many consider, has made him the most prolific kidney transplant surgeon in the country.
J. Michael Henderson is an American general and transplant surgeon, with experience in portal hypertension, liver transplantation, and pancreatic disease. Henderson is the Chief Medical Officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center since 2015. Prior to this role, he was with the Cleveland Clinic from 1992–2014. He was the Chairman of the Department of General Surgery and Director of the Transplant Center for 12 years, and was the Chief Quality Officer for the Cleveland Clinic’s 10-hospital system for eight years.
Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian medicine.
