Cardiac surgery, or cardiovascular surgery, is surgery on the heart or great vessels performed by cardiac surgeons. It is often used to treat complications of ischemic heart disease ; to correct congenital heart disease; or to treat valvular heart disease from various causes, including endocarditis, rheumatic heart disease, and atherosclerosis. It also includes heart transplantation.

He is also a former honorary surgeon to the President of India and a Padma Shri awardee.

Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin is the Chief Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon & Chairman of the Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, Medanta-The Medicity, India. A surgeon and pioneer in the field of liver transplantation, acknowledged for his work in establishing liver transplantation in India. Dr. Soin also runs the Liver Transplant institute at the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai. Dr Soin has performed more than 3500 living donor liver transplants in India, which is the highest in the country, and the second-highest in the world.
Ramakanta Panda, MCh, is the chief consultant for cardiovascular thoracic surgery and the group CEO of the Asian Heart Institute, a speciality cardiac care hospital under the aegis of Asian Hospitals, at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai, India. In 2002, he set up the Asian Heart Institute in India. Panda has performed about 28,000 successful cardiac surgeries as of 2022, including over 1,900 redo bypass surgeries. Jose Chacko Periappuram is an Indian cardiac surgeon and medical writer who performed the first successful heart transplant in the state of Kerala, India, as well as the first successful heart retransplant in the country. His other achievements include the first beating heart, awake bypass and total arterial revascularization surgeries in the state. Periappuram is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of London. He is the founder and chairman of "Heart Care Foundation", a charitable trust that financially assists poor heart patients. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2011.

J. Michael Henderson is an American general and transplant surgeon, with experience in portal hypertension, liver transplantation, and pancreatic disease. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian medicine.
