Islam was born in 1973 in Jamalpur District, Bangladesh. [6] He did his bachelor's and masters degrees in Computational Science and Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. [7] He did his PhD at Monash University in Information Technology. [7] [6]
Islam taught at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. [8] He was the Provost of Shahid Smriti Hall. [6] He served as the President of Bangladesh Computer Society. [6] He was a director of Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited. [6]
In December 2017, Islam was appointed vice-chancellor of the Canadian University of Bangladesh. [6] Dr Nazrul Islam joined as pro-vice-chancellor of the Canadian University of Bangladesh under Mohammad Mahfuzul Islam. [9]
