She is the No. 4 ranked woman in the world by FIDE rating and is also the fourth-highest rated woman and highest rated Russian woman in chess history with a peak rating of 2611. Goryachkina was the challenger in the 2020 Women's World Championship match, which she lost in rapid tiebreaks to Ju Wenjun. She is also a three-time Russian Women's Chess Champion, which she achieved in 2015, 2017, and 2020. In August 2023, she won the FIDE Women's World Cup after defeating Nurgyul Salimova in a tie break match.

The 2022 European Individual Chess Championship was held from 27 March to 6 April 2022 in Brežice, Slovenia. In open competition, Matthias Blübaum and Gabriel Sargissian tied for first, with Blübaum securing the gold and Sargissian the silver via tie-breaking criteria. Multiple players tied for third place, with Ivan Šarić receiving the bronze via tie-breaking criteria. In the women's competition, medalists were Govhar Beydullayeva, Nurgyul Salimova, and Nataliya Buksa for gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. Zdenko Kožul won gold among senior players.
The Women's Chess World Cup 2023 was a 103-player single-elimination chess tournament, the second edition of the Women's Chess World Cup, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 29 July to 22 August 2023. The runner up and third place finishers, Nurgyul Salimova and Anna Muzychuk, qualified for the Women's Candidates Tournament 2024. Since Aleksandra Goryachkina, the winner of the tournament, had already qualified through the Grand Prix, her replacement was Koneru Humpy, who was the highest-rated player on the January 2024 FIDE rating list who had played a minimum 30 games.
Charlize van Zyl is a South African chess player who holds the title of Woman International Master, which she earned in 2013 at the age of 13, becoming the youngest South African to do so.
