Monica Jahan Bose is a Bangladeshi artist and climate activist. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] She is best known for her "Storytelling with Saris" project and has been granted numerous awards for her work. [1] [2] [3] [9]
Bose was born in Britain. [5] [9] Her ancestry is from Katakhali village on Barabaishdia Island in Bangladesh. [2] [10] Katakhali village is threatened by climate change due to rising seas and cyclones. [2] [10] Bose uses many different art forms including film, printmaking, painting, spoken word, and installations. [5] [9] Her art focuses primarily on women's experiences and the impacts from climate change. [9]
In 2013, the Brentwood Arts Exchange displayed Bose's multimedia exhibit "Layer By Layer: Storytelling with Saris," which was created by Bose as a printmaking and story project that collaborating with women in Katakhali. [8] Filmmaker Nandita Ahmed created a documentary on Bose's work in Katakhali that was also on display at the exhibit. [8] Since 2015, Bose has hosted Sari Climate Pledge Workshops, which consisted of making saris with women and some men in the United States, France and Greece. [9]
In 2017, Bose's work "Hawa" was featured in the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum's exhibit "Ornate/Activate" alongside the work of Vandana Jain and Zainab Hussain. [6] The exhibit focused on artists from the South Asian Women's Creative Collective, which Bose served as a member of the board of directors. [6] In 2018, her exhibit "Weather the Storm" was on display at the Civilian Art Projects, in Washington D.C. [5] [11] Bose's 2018–2019 exhibit "WRAPture" was on display and consisted of 65 eighteen-foot-long saris being hung from 5 buildings, including the Anacostia Arts Center. [2] [12] "WRAPture" focused on connecting communities and starting a discussion around climate change by included saris decorated by women in Katakhali and saris decorated by residents of Anacostia. [2] From May to June 2019, Bose had her exhibit "Seven Minutes on the B67" displayed at the Open Source Gallery in Brooklyn. [3] "Seven Minutes on the B67" focused on connecting Brooklyn's South Slope to Bangladeshi immigrants in the Kensington neighborhood and is part of Bose's ongoing Storytelling with Saris art and advocacy project. From 2020 to 2022, Bose has been awarded $175,000 by the D.C. Commission of the Arts & Humanities through the Public Art Building Communities (PABC) grant program to supports the creation and installation of permanent or temporary public artwork that enhances District neighborhoods. [13] [14] [15] In 2022, Bose was one of the grant recipients for the Washington Project for the Arts (WPA) Wherewithal Grants funding cycle and was awarded $5000 for her projects. [4]
On 17 November 2022, Bose and designer Hina Puamohala Kneubuhl participated in a webinar called "In the Pandemic's Wake: Social Change and Reflection with Asian American and Pacific Islander Leaders” that was hosted by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. [1] The webinar focused on how Bose's and Kneubuhl's work engaged with discussions of climate change, social justice, and women's rights in addition to how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the artistic practices and communities. [1] [16] Her work has appeared in the Miami Herald, the Washington Post, Art Asia Pacific, the Milwaukee Sentinel, the Honolulu Star Advertiser, the Japan Times, and all major newspapers in Bangladesh. She has a BA in the Practice of Art (Painting) from Wesleyan University, a Diploma in Art from Santiniketan, India, and a JD from Columbia Law School. [17]
The Anacostia Community Museum is a community museum in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in the United States. It is one of twenty museums under the umbrella of the Smithsonian Institution and was the first federally funded community museum in the United States. The museum, founded in 1967, was created with the intention to bring aspects of the Smithsonian museums, located on the National Mall, to the Anacostia neighborhood, with the hope that community members from the neighborhood would visit the main Smithsonian museums. It became federally funded in 1970 and focuses on the community in and around Anacostia in its exhibitions. This museum also houses a library.

A choreopoem is a form of dramatic expression that combines poetry, dance, music, and song. The term was first coined in 1975 by American writer Ntozake Shange in a description of her work, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf. Shange's attempt to depart from traditional western poetry and storytelling resulted in a new art form that doesn't contain specific plot elements or characters, but instead focuses on creating an emotional response from the audience. In Shange's work, nontraditional spelling and African American Vernacular English are aspects of this genre that differ from traditional American literature. She emphasizes the importance of movement and nonverbal communication throughout the choreopoem so that it is able to function as a theatrical piece rather than being limited to poetry or dance.
Martha Jackson Jarvis is an American artist known for her mixed-media installations that explore aspects of African, African American, and Native American spirituality, ecological concerns, and the role of women in preserving indigenous cultures. Her installations are composed using a variety of natural materials including terracotta, sand, copper, recycled stone, glass, wood and coal. Her sculptures and installations are often site-specific, designed to interact with their surroundings and create a sense of place. Her works often focus on the history and culture of African Americans in the southern United States. In her exhibition at the Corcoran, Jarvis featured over 100 big collard green leaves, numerous carp and a live Potomac catfish.

Tim Tate is an American artist and the co-founder of the Washington Glass School in the Greater Washington, DC capital area. The school was founded in 2001 and is now the second largest warm glass school in the United States. Tate was diagnosed as HIV positive in 1989 and was told that he had a year left to live. As a result, Tate decided to begin working with glass in order to leave a legacy behind. Over a decade ago, Tate began incorporating video and embedded electronics into his glass sculptures, thus becoming one of the first artists to migrate and integrate the relatively new form of video art into sculptural works. In 2019 he was selected to represent the United States at the sixth edition of the GLASSTRESS exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Yvonne Shortt is a visually impaired African American question based installation artist. Her work encompasses illustration, installation, sculpture, painting, and photography. Shortt's work has been shown in museums and public parks throughout New York City, and deals with various themes, including sustainability, equality, abundance, disability, community, and race. According to a New York Times documentary short that featured her, she left her previous career in financial algorithm programming and chose to focus on the arts after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa.
Viola Canady was an African American quiltmaker. Canady discovered her passion for quilting through exposure to its processes as a child. She was the co-founder of the Daughters of Dorcas and Sons Quilting Guild of Washington, D.C. Canady created a wall hanging for the Charles Sumner school and it is exhibited at the Sumner museum. One of Canady's most notable pieces is the Cathedral Window Quilt.
