Monkey Hill is a railway station on the Bhor Ghat in Maharashtra, India. It serves as technical halt at which trains stop to check brakes. Almost all trains traveling from Khandala to Palasdari stop at Monkey Hill. Formerly, a reversing station was located between Monkey Hill and Khandala. The remains of the reversing station can be seen near the Amrutanjan Bridge on the old Mumbai–Pune road (Mumbai–Chennai National Highway NH48).

Catch siding

The station also has an inclined track ( 18°47′21″N73°22′03″E / 18.7891°N 73.3675°E / 18.7891; 73.3675 (Monkey Hill catch siding) ) in case of train brake failure. This is called a catch siding. It was used if a train had problem with its brakes or was out of control, as the inclined track slowed the train. Today this is very rarely used.

Deccan Queen

The Deccan Queen is a daily Indian passenger train service operated by the Central Railway zone of the Indian Railways connecting the cities of Mumbai and Pune. Introduced on June 1, 1930, the Deccan Queen was India's "first superfast train, first long-distance electric-hauled train, first vestibuled train, the first train to have a ‘women-only’ car, and the first train to feature a dining car". The service name comes from the Hindi nickname "डेक्कन की रानी", a popular nickname for Pune. Deccan Queen is currently the fastest train service linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Pune Junction. It has an average operating speed of 58 km/h (36 mph) including stops, and a top speed of 105 km/h (65 mph), making it among the fastest trains in India. The train's long history and common use as a commuter train has gained it significant popularity, including annual celebrations of its "birthday" on June 1 at Pune Junction.

Mumbai–Pune Mail

Mumbai-Pune Mail or Poona Mail was a luxurious train on Mumbai-Pune section by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. It was the first intercity train started between Mumbai and Pune. This train and the famous Deccan Queen Express used to serve Mumbai Pune commuters for many years. Later this train was extended to Kolhapur from 11 November 1971 and was renamed Sahyadri Express. This train was believed to carry Royal Mail and was one of the finest trains in British Empire.
