Central Railway is one of the 19 zones of Indian Railways. Its headquarters is in Mumbai at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. It has the distinction of operating the first passenger railway line in India, which opened from Mumbai to Thane on 16 April 1853.
The 12123 / 12124 Deccan Queen is a daily Indian passenger train service operated by the Central Railway zone of the Indian Railways connecting the cities of Mumbai and Pune. Introduced on June 1, 1930, the Deccan Queen was India's "first superfast train, first long-distance electric-hauled train, first vestibuled train, the first train to have a ‘women-only’ car, and the first train to feature a dining car". The service name comes from the Marathi nickname "दख्खन ची राणी", a popular nickname for Pune. Deccan Queen is currently the fastest train service linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Pune Junction. It has an average operating speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) including stops, and a top speed of 105 km/h (65 mph). The train's long history and common use as a commuter train has gained it significant popularity, including annual celebrations of its "birthday" on June 1 at Pune Junction. It was hauled by a Kalyan-based WCAM-3 end to end up until June 2022. From June 2022, its upgraded coaches in a new livery are being hauled by a Ajni-based WAP-7.

Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus is the main railway terminus in the city of Kolhapur, India. It is the end point of the Miraj to Kolhapur railway line. It falls under Pune division .It has a freight yard called Gur Market with a capacity of five freight trains nearly 4 km away from the station. Kolhapur is the centre of trade for southern Maharashtra.. This station connects Kolhapur with major cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, and Dhanbad through express trains. Some important express trains are the Mahalaxmi Express (Kolhapur–Mumbai), Deekshabhoomi Express, Haripriya Express (Kolhapur–Tirupati), IRCTC also runs the tourist luxury train Deccan Odyssey at Kolhapur station. The Minister of Railways announced the Miraj–Kolhapur–Vaibhavwadi rail route and electrification of Kolhapur–Pune rail route in 2016–17. There are daily passenger shuttle services between Kolhapur, Miraj and Pune.
The 11029/11030 Koyna Express is one of 3 daily dedicated express trains belonging to Indian Railways that run between Mumbai and Kolhapur in India. It operates as train number 11029 from Mumbai CSMT to Kolhapur SCSMT and as train number 11030 in the reverse direction. The other two daily trains on the Mumbai and Kolhapur run are 11023/24 Sahyadri Express & 17411/12 Mahalaxmi Express. When introduced, this train was run between Bombay Victoria Terminus (VT) and Miraj Junction as Bombay–Miraj Koyna Express, but latter extended up to Kolhapur.

This train and the famous Deccan Queen Express used to serve Mumbai Pune commuters for many years. Started as Mail in 1863, it was 303 Poona Mail in 1964. Got extension to Miraj past GC as 303 Bombay Mail in 1971 & become 303 Mahalaxmi Express during 1974 with final extension to Kolhapur. During Poona–Bangalore MG era, this connects 902 MG Poona Mail, 304 MG Bombay Mail & 304 MG Mahalaxmi Express by Section Carriage Interchanged at Poona & later at Miraj.
