The Monster Energy Cup is an exhibition race hosted by the AMA Supercross Championship that takes place in the Fall. The event started in 2011 and has been held at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas every year since. [1] A US $1 million purse is available to any rider who is able to win all three featured races. [2]
The Monster Energy Cup consists of three 10-lap Main Events for riders of 450cc 4-stroke motorcycles; the same 22 riders compete in all three events. [3] The event uses Olympic-style scoring, so the rider who gets the lowest overall score (a 1+1+1=3 being a perfect score for winning all three Main Events) is declared the winner. The overall winner pockets $100,000 if he fails to win all three Main Events. [2]
Amateur and junior divisions also compete at the Monster Energy Cup. [2]
The Monster Energy Cup has been held at Sam Boyd Stadium each year since 2011. A $1 million purse for anyone who could win all three 450cc Main Events has been on the line each year, and has been won three times.
The first time came in the inaugural running of the event when Ryan Villopoto went 1-1-1 for the million. [1] Justin Barcia won overall in 2012, then Ryan Dungey would have won in 2013 but forgot to take the mandatory "Joker Lane" during the first Main Event, costing him five positions and ultimately the overall win. [1] [4] Trey Canard came close to winning all three Main Events in 2014, but crashed out in the final main event handing the overall to Davi Millsaps. [1] Ken Roczen won in 2015 and would have gone back-to-back in 2016 but crashed during the second Main Event, giving the overall to Eli Tomac. [5] In 2017, Marvin Musquin became the second rider in the event's history to win all three Main Events. [6] In 2018, sweepstakes winner Jesse Hebert was also in the running for US$1 million if one rider could win all three Main Events. [7] Eli Tomac did, and so both Tomac and Hebert won $1 million. [3] [7] [8] Adam Cianciarulo took home the crown in 2019, which was the last edition.
The Monster Energy Cup was scheduled in 2020 and was going to take place on October 10, 2020 but the event was canceled in mid 2020 because of the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic. The venune was going to be held at Dignity Health Sports Park which supercross had never competed at beforehand. The stadium however did host some X Games moto events in the late 2000s and 2010s.

The AMA Supercross Championship (commercially known as Monster Energy AMA Supercross) is an American motorcycle racing series. Founded by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) in 1974, the AMA Supercross Championship races are held from January through early May. Supercross is a variant of motocross which involves off-road motorcycles on a constructed dirt track consisting of steep jumps and obstacles; the tracks are usually constructed inside a sports stadium. The easy accessibility and comfort of these stadium venues helped supercross surpass off-road motocross as a spectator attraction in the United States by the late 1970s.
John Tomac is an American former professional cyclist who competed from 1985 to 2005. He was a versatile rider who competed in multiple disciplines including; BMX racing, cross-country, road racing, trials riding and downhill racing. Tomac became a mountain bike racing icon in the late 1980s as the sport began to develop beyond its formative years. At the time of his retirement in 2005, he had won more mountain bike races than anyone in the sport. In 1991 he was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and, in 2004 he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame.
James Stewart Jr., also known as Bubba Stewart, is an American former professional motocross racer who competed in the AMA Motocross Championship and the AMA Supercross Championships. Through his years of racing, he earned the nickname "The Fastest Man on The Planet".
Chad Mark Reed is an Australian motocross and supercross racer. He is a two-time AMA Supercross 450cc champion, a one-time AMA Motocross 450cc champion, record holder for the most main event starts in AMA Supercross history with 265 starts, as well as podium finishes with 132.
Ben Townley is a former professional motocross and supercross racer originating from Taupō, New Zealand. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 2001 to 2005 and in the AMA Motocross Championships from 2006 to 2013. Townley is notable for winning the 2004 MX2 world championship.
Ryan Villopoto is an American former professional motocross and supercross racer who competed in the AMA Motocross Championships from 2005 to 2014; a four-time 450cc AMA Supercross Champion, a two-time 450cc AMA Motocross Champion, a three-time 250cc AMA Motocross Champion & a one-time 250cc West Supercross Champion. He was also a member of the winning USA team at the 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2011 Motocross Des Nations.
Ryan Dungey is an American retired professional motocross and supercross racer. He competed in the AMA Motocross Championships from 2006 to 2017 and again in 2022. He is a four-time 450cc AMA Supercross Champion, a three-time 450cc AMA Motocross Champion, a one-time 250cc AMA Supercross West & 250cc AMA Motocross Champion.
Marvin Musquin is a French professional motocross and supercross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 2004 to 2010 and, has competed in the AMA Motocross Championships since 2011. He is a two-time MX2 World Champion & the 2015 250cc AMA Supercross East Champion.
Ken Roczen is a German professional motocross and supercross racer. He competed in the Motocross World Championships from 2009 to 2011 and the AMA Supercross Championships since 2011. He is the 2011 MX2 World Champion, a two-time 450cc AMA Motocross Champion, the 2013 AMA Supercross 250cc West Champion & a two-time FIM World Supercross SX1 Champion. He was also a member of the winning German team at the 2012 Motocross des Nations.
Eli Tomac is an American professional Motocross and Supercross racer competing in the AMA Supercross and Motocross championships; a two-time 450cc AMA Supercross Champion, a four-time 450cc AMA Motocross Champion, a one-time 250cc AMA Supercross & AMA Motocross Champion. He is second all-time in 450cc AMA Supercross wins with 51, and third all-time in 450cc AMA Motocross wins with 32.
