Morgan Upland

Morgan Upland ( 69°S66°W / 69°S 66°W / -69; -66 ) is a featureless undulating snow plateau in the central Antarctic Peninsula bounded by Cole Glacier and Clarke Glacier on the north and west, by Weyerhaeuser Glacier on the east, by Airy Glacier on the south, and Hariot Glacier on the southwest. The area was photographed from the air in September 1962 by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) air unit, and the photos were used by BAS surveyor Ivor P. Morgan, for whom the upland is named, who compiled a map over the period 1961 to 1964. [1]

Zonda Glacier is a glacier about 8 miles (13 km) long, flowing west-southwest between Fohn Bastion and Zonda Towers into George VI Sound. The glacier was included in surveys by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1948, and British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1971–72, and was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy, 1966. The name applied by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1977 continues the theme of wind names in the area, as "zonda wind" is the Argentine name for the warm dry wind descending the east slopes of the Andes.

Bartók Glacier is a glacier, 7 nautical miles (13 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, flowing southwest from the southern end of the Elgar Uplands in the northern part of Alexander Island. It was first photographed from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937, and more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók.

Delius Glacier is a glacier, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, flowing west from the Elgar Uplands into Nichols Snowfield, in the northern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. It was more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and from U.S. Landsat imagery of February 1975. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Frederick Delius, the British composer.

Sullivan Glacier is a glacier flowing west into Gilbert Glacier, immediately south of Elgar Uplands in the north part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier was first sighted from a distance by the British Graham Land Expedition during a flight in 1937 and roughly mapped. Remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. In association with the names of other composers in this area, named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900), English composer.

The Elgar Uplands are uplands rising to 1,900 metres (6,200 ft), between Tufts Pass to the north and Sullivan Glacier to the south, in the northern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. They were first photographed from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. They were remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and from U.S. Landsat imagery of February, 1975. They were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Sir Edward Elgar, the English composer (1857-1934).

Pearson Spur is a spur extending southeast from Elgar Uplands toward the head of Sibelius Glacier, situated in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) in 1947, roughly mapped from air photographs by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1959, and surveyed by British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1973–77. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1980 after Martin Robert Pearson, BAS glaciologist, 1970–73, who worked on Alexander Island, in years 1971 and 1972.

Fleming Glacier is a broad glacier 25 nautical miles (46 km) long on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, flowing west-northwest and terminating in Forster Ice Piedmont to the east of the Wordie Ice Shelf. The glacier was charted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–37, and was photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service on September 29, 1940. This hitherto unnamed feature was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947 for Reverend W.L.S. Fleming, Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge University; also, chaplain, chief scientist, and geologist of the BGLE.

Foreman Glacier is a glacier flowing south-southeast from the Havre Mountains in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It drains the southwest slopes of Dimitrova Peak and the west slopes of Breze Peak and flows into Palestrina Glacier north of Balan Ridge in Sofia University Mountains. The glacier was surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1975–76, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1980 after David Alexander Foreman, a BAS aircraft mechanic at Adelaide Station, 1973–76.

Français Glacier is a glacier 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide and 12 nautical miles (22 km) long, flowing north-northeast from the continental ice to the Antarctic coast close west of Ravin Bay. Though no glaciers were noted on Captain Jules Dumont d'Urville's chart of this coast, the close correlation of his "Baie des Ravins" feature and narrative description with the indentation of the coast near the mouth of this glacier suggests first sighting of this feature by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1837–40. During December 1912 members of the Main Base Party of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) camped on the upland slopes close east of the glacier, but no reference was made to the glacier in the AAE reports, though a clear view and unpublished sketch were obtained of the distant coast to the northwest.

Gerontius Glacier is a glacier flowing north from the Elgar Uplands into Tufts Pass in northern Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1977, association with the nearby uplands, from The Dream of Gerontius, a work for chorus, solo voices and orchestra by Edward Elgar.

Godfrey Upland is a small remnant plateau with an undulating surface and a mean elevation of 1,500 metres (5,000 ft) in south-central Graham Land, Antarctica. It is bounded by Clarke, Meridian, Lammers and Cole Glaciers. The existence of the feature was known to the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, Finn Ronne and Carl R. Eklund having traveled along Meridian and Lammers Glaciers in January 1941. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Godfrey, an American glassworker and mathematician who, at the same time as John Hadley, independently invented the quadrant, in 1730.

Meridian Glacier is a broad glacier, 9 nautical miles (17 km) long, which flows south along the west side of Godfrey Upland and joins Clarke Glacier between Behaim Peak and Elton Hill, in southern Graham Land, Antarctica. Finn Ronne and Carl R. Eklund of the United States Antarctic Service travelled along this glacier in January 1941. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in November 1947, and was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in December 1958. The glacier was so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee because the glacier flows from north to south along the meridian.

Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who travelled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.

McManus Glacier is a glacier flowing north into Palestrina Glacier, in northwestern Alexander Island, Antarctica. It separates Lassus Mountains on the west from Sofia University Mountains on the east. The glacier was surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1975–76, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1980 after Alan James McManus, a BAS cook at Grytviken and Faraday Research Station, 1971–73, and at Adelaide Island and Rothera Research Station, 1975–78.

Scott Uplands is a group of rounded hills rising to about 1,500 m south of Seward Mountains in southwest Palmer Land. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from aerial photographs taken by the U.S. Navy, 1966–69. Surveyed by British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1974–75. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1977 after Roger J. Scott, BAS surveyor, Stonington Island, 1973–75, who was in charge of the survey party in this area.

Sleipnir Glacier is a glacier 10 nautical miles (18 km) long, flowing into the west side of Cabinet Inlet between Balder and Spur Points, on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. The Vologes Ridge is in the central portion of the glacier.

Lammers Glacier is a large glacier flowing east along the north side of Godfrey Upland into the Traffic Circle and Mercator Ice Piedmont, on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. This glacier appears indistinctly in an aerial photograph taken by Sir Hubert Wilkins on 20 December 1928, but shows more clearly in aerial photographs taken by Lincoln Ellsworth in 1935 and the United States Antarctic Service in 1940. It was resighted in 1947 by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne, who named it for Lester Lammers, who had contributed nine grown husky dogs and four puppies to the expedition.

Lennon Glacier is a glacier flowing southwest into the outer part of Lazarev Bay, in northern Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1975–76, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1980 after BAS glaciologist Peter Wilfred Lennon, who worked on Alexander Island, 1974–76.
