"Morgenglanz der Ewigkeit" (Morning splendour of eternity) is a Christian hymn with German text originally by Christian Knorr von Rosenroth, written around 1690 and set to music for private devotion. It became known with a 1662 melody by Johann Rudolf Ahle. The song is part of modern German hymnals and songbooks. It was translated to English as "Come, Thou Bright and Morning Star", and as "Dayspring of Eternity".
Christian Knorr von Rosenroth, a Lutheran theologian from Silesia, [1] wrote the text of "Morgenglanz der Ewigkeit" in 1684, [2] intended for use in private devotion (Hausandacht). The song was soon included in Protestant church services. From the 1930s, it also became part of Catholic hymnals. In both denominations, it is used as a morning song and also as a song praising Jesus. [1]
The song appears in the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch as EG . It is part of the Catholic Gotteslob of 2013 as a morning song, GL 84, taking the original followed by three stanzas written in 1690 by Maria Luise Thurmair. [2] It is part of many hymnals and songbooks. [3]
The poet wrote seven stanzas of six lines each, rhyming AABBCC, with the last line extremely short. His first stanza has remained almost unchanged, while the other stanzas vary according to occasion and denomination, The following is the original beginning:
Morgen-Glantz der Ewigkeit
Licht vom unerschöpften Lichte
Schick uns diese Morgen-Zeit
Deine Strahlen zu Gesichte:
Und vertreib durch deine Macht
unsre Nacht.
Die bewölckte Finsternis
Müsse deinem Glantz entfliegen
Die durch Adams Apfel-Biß

The morning splendour is a symbol of Jesus who is expected to expel the night. The wording "Licht vom unerschöpften Lichte" (light from uncreated light) is reminiscent of a passage in the Nicean Creed. Later stanzas are a prayer for a life pleasing God. The final two stanzas compare Jesus to a "Gnaden-Sonne" (sun of mercy) which will shine for the believers also in the Beyond. [1]
Rosenroth composed a melody when he first published. However, a Halle-Liederbuch of 1704 combined it with a melody that Johann Rudolf Ahle had composed in 1662. [1] [3] The melody was used by Friedrich Dörr for the Advent song "Kündet allen in der Not". [4]
Max Reger composed a chorale prelude based on the hymn tune in 1901, as part of his Op. 79b, the fourth of 13 preludes. [5] Johannes Weyrauch wrote a chorale prelude as part of his Op. 52. [6]
The hymn was translated to English. Richard Massie translated it to "Come, Thou Bright and Morning Star", published in 1857 in the Church Psalter & Hymn Book. [7] [8] A version "Dayspring of Eternity" was written by Robert Brown-Borthwick, published in Church Hymns in 1871 as a morning hymn. [9] [10]
Christian Knorr von Rosenroth was a German Christian Hebraist and Christian Cabalist born at Alt-Raudten in Silesia. After having completed his studies in the universities of Wittenberg and Leipzig, he traveled through the Netherlands, France, and England. At Amsterdam, he became acquainted with an Armenian prince, with the chief Rabbi, Meier Stern, Dr. John Lightfoot and Henry More. Influenced by them, and others, he studied Oriental languages, chemistry, and the cabalistic sciences. On his return, he settled at Sulzbach where he became the privy counsellor of Christian Augustus, Count Palatine of Sulzbach. He devoted himself to the study of Hebrew. Later he became a student of the Kabbalah, in which he believed to find proofs of the doctrines of Christianity.
"Nun bitten wir den Heiligen Geist" is a German Christian hymn. The first stanza is a leise from the 13th century which alludes to the Latin sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus for Pentecost. It was widely known, and aside from its Pentecostal origin was also used as a procession song and in sacred plays.
"Gott sei gelobet und gebenedeiet" is a Lutheran hymn of 1524 with words written by Martin Luther who used an older first stanza and melody. It is a song of thanks after communion. Luther's version in three stanzas was printed in the Erfurt Enchiridion of 1524 and in Johann Walter's choral hymnal Eyn geystlich Gesangk Buchleyn the same year. Today, the song appears in German hymnals, including both the Protestant Evangelisches Gesangbuch, and in a different version in the Catholic Gotteslob.
Maria Luise Thurmair née Mumelter was a German Catholic theologian, hymnodist and writer. She contributed the lyrics of many hymns when the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob was first published in 1975.
"Herr, deine Güt ist unbegrenzt" is a Catholic hymn by Maria Luise Thurmair, based on Psalm 36 and set to a 1525 melody by Matthäus Greitner, the same as "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß". The hymn in two stanzas of twelve lines was written in 1971. It appeared in the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob in 1975 as GL 289. In the current Gotteslob is GL 427, in the section "Vertrauen und Trost".
Georg Thurmair was a German poet who wrote around 300 hymns, a writer, journalist and author of documentary films.
"Der Geist des Herrn erfüllt das All" is a Christian hymn for Pentecost by Maria Luise Thurmair, written in 1941. First printed in 1946, it appeared with a 1609 melody by Melchior Vulpius in the German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob in 1975 as GL 249. It has been included in ecumenical hymnals and songbooks.
"Von guten Mächten" is a Christian poem which Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote in 1944 when he was in a Gestapo prison because of his resistance to the Nazis. It is his last theological text before he was executed on 9 April 1945. It became a frequently sung hymn, with different melodies, which has appeared in current German hymnals. The incipit is Von guten Mächten treu und still umgeben. The seventh and last stanza, Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen, has been used as a refrain in a popular version.
"Jerusalem, du hochgebaute Stadt" is a German Christian hymn with lyrics written by the Lutheran Johann Matthäus Meyfart in 1626, and a melody possibly by Melchior Franck. Its theme is the New Jerusalem as the ultimate destination of the Soul, as the subtitle says "Ein Lied vom Himmlischen Jerusalem". Originally in eight stanzas, it appears in seven stanzas in the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch as EG 150), and in five stanzas in the Catholic Gotteslob as GL 553. It was of only regional importance during the Baroque period, but was rediscovered, often printed and set to music from the 19th century.
"Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier" is a German Christmas hymn, with lyrics by Paul Gerhardt which were first published in 1653. It was then sung with an older melody by Martin Luther, but a melody which was likely created by Johann Sebastian Bach for Georg Christian Schemelli's Musicalisches Gesang-Buch of 1736 is now part of current Protestant and Catholic hymnals.
"Nun, Brüder, sind wir frohgemut" is a German Catholic hymn. It was written by Georg Thurmair as both a pilgrimage song and a Marian hymn. The melody was composed by Adolf Lohmann, who wrote a choral setting in 1936. Related to youth pilgrimages to an image of Mary at the Altenberger Dom, it is also known as "Altenberger Wallfahrtslied". The song is regarded as an Oppositionelles Lied, in subtle protest against the Nazi regime.
"Lobet den Herren alle, die ihn ehren" is a sacred morning song with a text by Paul Gerhardt and a melody by Johann Crüger, who first published it in the fifth edition of his hymnal Praxis Pietatis Melica in 1653. The Lutheran hymn is still popular and appears in hymnals including the Protestant Evangelisches Gesangbuch and the Catholic Gotteslob.
"Mein Gott, wie schön ist deine Welt" is a German Catholic hymn. It was written by Georg Thurmair in 1936. The melody was composed by Heinrich Neuß the same year. It was part of Thurmair's 1938 hymnal Kirchenlied, and it is part of regional sections of the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob (2013).
"Zeige uns, Herr, deine Allmacht und Güte" is a Christian hymn of penitence. The lyrics were written in the early 1980s by Raymund Weber. They were combined with a melody from the 1708 hymnal by Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen. The song in three stanzas appeared in the 2013 Catholic hymnal Gotteslob as GL 272 in the section for Lent.
"Dein Lob, Herr, ruft der Himmel aus" is a German Catholic hymn. Adolf Lohmann adapted a 1659 hymn by the Jesuit astronomer Albert Curtz, who paraphrased Psalm 19. The melody appeared in Augsburg in 1669. It was No. 1 in the 1938 hymnal Kirchenlied and is part of the German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob as GL 381.
"Nun lässest du, o Herr" is a Christian hymn by Georg Thurmair written in 1966 as a paraphrase of the Nunc dimittis canticle. It was part of the German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob of 1975 as GL 660 with a 16th-century melody by Loys Bourgeois. With this melody, it is also part of the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch as EG 695. It is part of the second edition of the Gotteslob as GL 500, with a new 1994 melody.
"Nun liebe Seel, nun ist es Zeit", alternatively written "Nun, liebe Seel, nun ist es Zeit", is a Lutheran hymn for Epiphany, in five stanzas of six lines each, by Georg Weissel. It was first printed in 1642, set as a motet by Johannes Eccard. A version with an additional stanza is attributed to Johann Christoph Arnschwanger.
"O Licht der wunderbaren Nacht" is a Christian Easter hymn by Georg Thurmair written in 1963. It was part of the German Catholic hymnal Gotteslob of 1975 as GL 208, with a melody from the 14th century. It is part of the second edition of the Gotteslob as GL 334, also of regional sections of the Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch.
"Seht, er lebt" is a Christian poem written by the Catholic priest Lothar Zenetti in 1973. With an Israeli melody, it became an Easter hymn in the Neues Geistliches Lied (NGL) genre, first published in 1975. In the 2013 Catholic hymnal Gotteslob, it appears as GL 781 in the regional section for the Diocese of Limburg.
