The parish is served by two churches: St. Joseph's Church in Mountmellick and St. Mary's Church in Clonaghadoo. [3]
The main church is St. Joseph's Church in Mountmellick. Building of this church started in 1864, to be completed in 1878. In 1912, a bell-tower was added. The church was originally a rectangle until an extension in 1965 changed it in a cruciform shape. [4]
The second church in the parish is the St. Mary's Church in Clonaghadoo. This church was built in 1970 and replaced an older chapel a short distance away. [5]

St Mary's Knockbeg College is a Roman Catholic, all-boys secondary school located on the Laois/Carlow border in Ireland, approximately 3 km from both Carlow town and Graiguecullen, County Laois. Exclusively a boarding school until the 1980s, it now accommodates only day-pupils; the boarding school having closed down in June 2011. Knockbeg College celebrated its bicentenary in 1993.

John Dunne was an Irish priest and educator, who served as President of Carlow College from 1856 to 1864. He was born in July 1816 in Ballinakill, Queens County(Laois) his great uncle also called John Dunne was Bishop of Ossory. His father John Dunne gave evidence along with James Doyle to a House of Commons Committee in London. Educated at Ballyroan, in 1834 he entered St. Patrick's, Carlow College, from which in 1837 he proceeded to Maynooth College completing his ecclesiastic course, he proceeding to study in the Dunboyne Establishment. Dunne returned to Carlow College as a Professor of Moral and Mental Philosophy, in 1850 he was appointed vice-president, and 1856 he succeeded Dr. Walshe as President of the college.
