Mugina is a sector and town in Kamonyi District, Southern Province, Rwanda [2] and a suburb of Kigali. The town had a population of 14,755 in the 2012 census, while the sector had a population of 45,894 in the 2022 census. [1] [3]
During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, a major massacre occurred in Mugina, during which houses with women and children inside were burned. In total, thousands of people had been killed. On 3 October 2023, Pierre-Claver Karangwa was arrested in the Netherlands for his role in this massacre. [4] [5]
Mugina is the birthplace of army officers Augustin Bizimungu and Ildephonse Hategekimana, both of whom were major perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide. [6] [7]
Augustin Bizimungu is a former general of the Rwandan Armed Forces (FAR). On 16 April 1994, at the start of the Rwandan genocide, he was appointed chief of staff of the army and promoted to the rank of major general.
Jerome Clement Bicamumpaka is a Rwandan politician. He is one of the 402 co-founders of the Rwandan political party MDR, a democratic opposition party, created in Kigali on July 1, 1991. He was born on November 4, 1957, in Mukono (Rwaza), in Ruhondo commune, Ruhengeri prefecture.
Ildephonse Hategekimana is a Rwandan soldier who participated in the Rwandan genocide.
Augustin Ndindiliyimana is a former Rwandan General and Chief of the Rwandan National Gendarmerie. He was convicted of genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda but he was acquitted by the tribunal upon appeal.
Innocent Sagahutu is a former Rwandan soldier, who is chiefly known for his role in the Rwandan genocide.
Gasabo is a district (akarere) in Kigali city, the capital of Rwanda. The headquarter of Gasabo is located in Remera Sector. The district also includes large areas of the city itself, including Kacyiru, Kimironko, Remera, Nyarutarama and Kimihurura.

Fulgence Kayishema is a Rwandan Hutu militiaman arrested for war crimes in relation to his role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Born in Kivumu, he was the inspector of the judicial police there at the time of the genocide. His indictment cites his involvement in massacres from April 6, 1994, until April 20, along with Athanase Seromba, Grégoire Ndahimana, Télesphore Ndungutse, the judge Joseph Habiyambere and the assistant mayor Vedaste Mupende.
Grégoire Ndahimana is the former mayor of Kivumu, Rwanda. Indicted and arrested for alleged war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), Ndahimana is thought to be one of the key figures in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and is claimed to have had up to 6,000 Tutsi killed. In 2013, he was convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
