Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta (15 April 1937 - 21 January 2021) [1] was a former Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force. He was appointed in 1986 to succeed Etim Inyang and was succeeded by Aliyu Attah in 1990. [2] [3] He was later Coordinator of National Security to President of Nigeria Ibrahim Babangida.
He was born in Jimeta on 15 April 1937. [4]
Gambo as he was popularly called,attended Jimeta Elementary School (1947–49) and Yola Middle School (1950–55) for his early education.
Thereafter,he went to Bauchi Provincial Secondary School (1956–58) and Government College Keffi (1958–59),before attending Nigeria Police College Kaduna (1959) and Police College Ikeja (1959).
He also attended Detective Training School,Wakefield,UK (1962),Bramhill Police College UK (1963),International Police Academy,Washington DC,USA (1980) and National Police Academy,Cairo,Egypt. [5]
After leaving the police college,Gambo began his career as a Cadet sub-Inspector. In 1963,he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He became a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in 1967 and full superintendent in 1969.
In 1972,he was promoted to Chief Superintendent of Police and became an Assistant Commissioner of Police in 1974. He became Commissioner of Police in 1977 and served in Lagos,where he got national fame as a crack police officer dealing with robberies in the state.
In 1982,he was promoted AIG and transferred to Force Criminal Investigation Division,Alagbon Close,Lagos. He became a DIG in 1984 and Inspector General of Police in 1986. [6]
In 2011,the then President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Alhaji Mohammed Gambo Jimeta as a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy. [7]
He died on Thursday 21 January 2021. [8]

The protest takes its name from the slogan started in 2017 as a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #EndSARS to demand the disbanding of the unit by the Nigerian government. After experiencing a revitalisation in October 2020 following more revelations of the abuses of the unit,mass demonstrations occurred throughout the major cities of Nigeria,accompanied by vociferous outrage on social media platforms. About 28 million tweets bearing the hashtag have been accumulated on Twitter alone. Solidarity protests and demonstrations by Nigerians in diaspora and sympathizers occurred in many major cities of the world. The protests are notable for its patronage by a demographic that is made of entirely young Nigerians. The movement has since expanded to include demands for good and accountable governance,considering the unprecedented hardship in the country.

He was appointed by the President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari to replace Mohammed Adamu who retired from Nigeria Police Force in February 2021. The Police Council on Friday,June 4,2021,confirmed the appointment of Alkali Usman Baba as the substantive Inspector General of Police.
Olatunji Disu is a Nigerian Police Officer,a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police,and the Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Police Force in Nigeria,the position previously held by Abba Kyari. Parry Benjamin Osemwegie Osayande is a retired Deputy Inspector General of police. He was the commissioner of police of the former Bendel state during the Anini saga which terrorised Nigeria in the 1980s. Under his watch as commissioner of police in the now defunct Bendel state,Lawrence Anini,the infamous armed robber was captured and executed. In 1990,Parry Osayande directed the operations which suppressed the Bauchi religious inspired riots in which several people died. In 1992,Osayande led the Federal Government delegation to Namibia under the auspices of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group to monitor the behaviour,conduct and activities of the South West African Police and assist Namibian citizens to hold free and fair elections. Osayande retired as Deputy Inspector General of police in 1992. He was later appointed as Chairman of the Police Service Commission in 2010 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration,a position he held until 2014. Osayande served in several committees set up by the Nigerian Federal Government to reform the Police force.
