University of Mujibnagar is a public university in Meherpur District. It is the 53rd public university in Bangladesh. [1] [2]

History

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina desired to establish a public university in every district of Bangladesh. So parliament passed the Mujibnagar University Act 2023 to establish a university at Meherpur District. [3] It was proposed to be established as Meherpur University but later it was proposed to be established as Mujibnagar University in honor of the provisional capital of Bangladesh during the War of Independence of Bangladesh.

Md. Rabiul Islam was appointed the university's first vice chancellor in November 2023. [4]

This university is now early stages of establishment. It Is Planned To start its academic activities from session 2024-25.

Mujibnagar, formerly known as Baidyanathtala (Boiddonathtola) and Bhoborpara, is a town in the Mujibnagar Upazila of Meherpur District in Khulna, Bangladesh. The Provisional Government of Bangladesh was formed on 10 April 1971, however, sworn in on 17 April 1971 in this place by the elected representatives of the Bengalees, that led the Bangladesh Liberation War, who were leading the guerrilla war for the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. The place was renamed Mujibnagar by the proclamation of independence, in honour of then imprisoned Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had declared Bangladesh independent. The actual capital of the government while in exile was Calcutta. A memorial complex covering 20.10 acres (8.13 ha) has been built at the site where the ministers of that first government took their oaths.

Abul Hasnat Muhammad Qamaruzzaman was a Bangladeshi politician, government minister and a leading member of the Awami League. A member of the Mujibnagar Government, Qamaruzzaman was murdered along with Syed Nazrul Islam, Muhammad Mansur Ali and Tajuddin Ahmed in the jail killings in Dhaka Central Jail on 3 November 1975 by a group of army officers on the instruction of President Mostaq.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Akbar Ali Khan (economist)</span> Bangladeshi economist and educationist (1944–2022)

Akbar Ali Khan was a Bangladeshi economist and educationist who served as a bureaucrat until 2001. He was a sub-divisional officer of Habiganj during the Bangladesh Liberation War when he decided to join the war. Later he served as an official of the Mujibnagar Government. After independence, he rejoined the civil service and reached the highest post of Cabinet Secretary. In the meanwhile, he also worked as a university teacher. Towards the end of 2006, he became one of the advisers of the Caretaker Government led by President Iajuddin Ahmed. He resigned along with three other advisers, namely, Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, C M Shafi Sami and Sultana Kamal on the grounds of dissatisfaction with President Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed caretaker government. According to them, there was no scope to contribute in the caretaker government to create a congenial atmosphere for holding a free and fair election. In October 2007, the Government of Bangladesh constituted a Regulatory Reforms Commission (RRC) with him as the chair.

The Provisional Government of Bangladesh, popularly known as the Mujibnagar Government ; also known as the Bangladeshi government-in-exile, was a provisional government that was established following the proclamation of independence of East Pakistan as Bangladesh on 10 April 1971. Headed by prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad, it was the supreme leadership of the Bangladeshi liberation movement, comprising a cabinet, a diplomatic corps, an assembly, an armed force, and a radio service. It operated as a government-in-exile from Kolkata.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Allah'r Dal</span> Islamic terrorist group in Bangladesh

Allah'r Dal is an Islamic terrorist organisation operating in Bangladesh. The group also operates under the name Allah'r Sarkar. Bangladesh Enterprise Institute in their 2007–2008 Trends in Militancy in Bangladesh report referred to the group as an offshoot of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh. According to the report the group is most active in Kushtia District, Meherpur District, and Chuadanga District.

Mohammed Noorul Quader was a Bangladeshi freedom fighter, government officer, and entrepreneur. He was the first establishment secretary of the Mujibnagar Government, the first secretary of Bangladesh, and a pioneer of Bangladesh's export-oriented ready made garment industry. He was also the founding chairman of the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and the founder of the Desh Group.

K M Ali Azam is a retired Bangladeshi government official who is a current member of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission. Prior to this, he served as the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration. He is the former secretary of the Ministry of Industries and a director of British American Tobacco Bangladesh.
