Justice Mukul Mudgal is a retired Indian judge of Delhi High Court, and remained Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court from 2009 to 2011. [1] [2] He is currently the head of the FIFA Governance Committee and Review Committee. [3]

Biography

Mudgal was born in New Delhi to Professor Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, a renowned classical musician from the Gwalior gharana. [4] His father started Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi in 1939 from their home near Plaza cinema, Connaught Place. [4] Professor Vinay Chandra Maudgalya is best remembered today for the lyrics of the song Hind Desh ke Niwasi in the animation film Ek Anek Aur Ekta by Vijaya Mulay which won the National Film Award for Best Educational Film. [5] After his schooling from Modern School, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi, Mukul Mudgal did B.Sc. (Hons.) from Hindu College, University of Delhi, followed by LL.B. from Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. [1] He started his career as an advocate at the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court in 1973. He worked under Dr. Y.S. Chitale (Sr. Advocate) as a junior for many years and appeared in a number of landmark cases whilst working under him. He was appointed a Judge of the Delhi High Court on 2 March 1998. Thereafter, he became the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 5 December 2009 and retired on 3 January 2011.

In 2014, he headed Mudgal Committee, which included Additional Solicitor General of India L Nageswara Rao and senior advocate and former cricket umpire Nilay Dutta, appointed by the Supreme Court to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegation of corruption, betting and spot-fixing in 2013 Indian Premier League. His sister, Madhavi Mudgal is noted Indian Odissi classical dancer, while brother Madhup Mudgal, a Hindustani classical vocalist. He was earlier married to his father's disciple and noted Hindustani classical vocalist Shubha Mudgal. [4] His son Dhaval is a lead singer in a famous Delhi-based band Half Step Down [4] [8] and a poker player. [9]

The first Gandharva Mahavidyalaya was established by him on 5 May 1901 at Lahore. The New Delhi school follows the syllabi set by the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal.

Ranjan Gogoi is an Indian former advocate and judge who served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from 2018 to 2019, having previously served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 2012 to 2018. He is currently a Member of the Rajya Sabha, having been nominated by President Ram Nath Kovind on 16 March 2020. Gogoi served as a judge in the Gauhati High Court from 2001 to 2010, and then was transferred as a judge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 2010 to 2011 where he later was the Chief Justice from 2011 to 2012. The 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case arose when the Delhi Police arrested three cricketers, Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, on the charges of alleged spot-fixing. The three represented the Rajasthan Royals in the 2013 Indian Premier League. In a separate case, Mumbai Police arrested Vindu Dara Singh, Priyank Sepany and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan for alleged betting.

Naina Devi also known as Naina Ripjit Singh, was Indian vocalist of Hindustani classical music, most known for her thumri renditions, though she also sang dadra and ghazals. She was a music producer at All India Radio and later with Doordarshan. She started her musical training under Girja Shankar Chakravarty in her teens, later restarted it with Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan of Rampur-Sahaswan gharana and Rasoolan Bai of Benaras gharana, in the 1950s. Born in an aristocratic family in Kolkata, she was married into the royal family of Kapurthala State at age 16, and was started singing in concerts only after her husband died in 1949, and she moved to Delhi.

Sanjay Kishan Kaul is a former judge and lawyer who served as a judge of the Supreme Court of India since 2017 until upon his retirement in 2023. He has served as the first puisne judge, senior-most after the Chief Justice of India. Also, he has been the ex officio executive chairman of National Legal Services Authority.

Nilayananda Dutta was an Indian lawyer, cricket administrator, and cricket umpire. The only international match he officiated in was a One Day International in 1990. He was a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India and an official of the Assam Cricket Association. He was a member of the three-member Mudgal Committee formed to probe the 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing and betting case.

Lavu Nageswara Rao is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is the seventh person elevated directly from the bar to the Supreme Court and was sworn in on 13 May 2016. He was a senior advocate and a former Additional Solicitor General of India.

Mudgal Committee is a four-member committee, headed by former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal and comprising the then Additional Solicitor General of India L. Nageswara Rao and senior advocate and former cricket umpire Nilay Dutta to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations of corruption against BCCI chief N. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, India Cements, and Rajasthan Royals team owner Jaipur IPS Cricket Private Ltd, as well as with the larger mandate of investigating allegations having to do with betting and spot-fixing in 2013 Indian Premier League matches and the involvement of players.

Vinay Chandra Maudgalya(1918 - 1995) was an Indian classical musician, vocalist and the founder of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, a music and dance academy for the promotion of Hindustani music and Indian classical dances. He was a follower of Gwalior gharana. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1984.
