"Murder Dem" is a song by Nigerian rapper and record producer Jesse Jagz. It was released on December 2, 2012, by Chocolate City. The song was originally intended to be included on Jesse Jagz's second studio album, Jagz Nation, Vol.1. Thy Nation Come (2013), but was ultimately removed from the final track listing due to Jagz's departure from Chocolate City. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The song samples the church hymn, "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee". [1] Jesse Jagz first performed the song on the reality TV show, Nigerian Idol . [5]

Music video

The music video for "Murder Dem" was directed by MEX films. It was uploaded to YouTube on February 27, 2013, at a total length of 3 minutes and 47 seconds. In the video, Jesse Jagz plays the general of Jagz Nation, a fictional character, who is on Nigeria's "most wanted list". Throughout the music video, several newspaper headlines hinted to the possible assassination and capture of the general. In addition, footage of the Nigerian Army was shown in the video. Moreover, footages of Bob Marley and Fela Kuti were also shown. The video's primary scene was a room equipped with a television set and posters on the wall. [6]

Critical reception

Upon its release, the song received positive reviews from music critics. A writer for Nigerian Sounds said, "The track showcases Jesse's Avant Garde production style beginning with the popular Christmas carol, "Joyful Joyful" and the bars alert people that "he's been gone for a minute but he's back like he left sum'n!" [7]

Accolades

The music video for "Murder Dem" was nominated for Most Gifted Ragga/Dancehall Video at the 10th Annual Channel O Music Video Awards, which took place at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto on November 30, 2013. [8] [9]

Jesse Garba Abaga, known professionally as Jesse Jagz, is a Nigerian rapper, record producer and songwriter. He signed a record deal with Chocolate City in 2010 and released his debut studio album Jag of All Tradez that same year. He voluntarily exited the Chocolate City deal in 2013 and announced the launch of his independent label, Jagz Nation. Jagz released his second studio album Jagz Nation, Vol.1. Thy Nation Come in 2013; it included singles such as "Redemption", "Bad Girl", "Sex & Scotch" and "God on the Mic". His third studio album, Jagz Nation Vol. 2: Royal Niger Company, was released in 2014. Jesse Jagz enlisted Shady, Dugod, Ibro and Phazehop to assist with production. It was released exclusively on the Star Music platform for free digital streaming on April 30, 2015. The album features appearances from Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, M.I Abaga, Nosa, Ruby Gyang, Victoria Kimani, Pryse, DJ Lambo, DJ Caise, Loose Kaynon, Dice Ailes, Milli and Koker. Its production was handled by Jesse Jagz, Reinhard, L37, Tunday, Teck Zilla, Nosa, DJ Caise and Ckay. The album's release celebrated the merger of Loopy Music and Chocolate City, as well as the return of Jesse Jagz. The Son of a Kapenta is the second studio album by Nigerian singer Brymo. It was released by Chocolate City on November 15, 2012. Recorded in English and Yoruba, the album combines elements of fuji music with contemporary pop and techno. It features guest appearances from Jesse Jagz, Pryse, M.I, Ice Prince and Efya. The album was produced by E Kelly, Mikky Me Joses, Legendury Beatz, Jesse Jagz, Blaze, DMM Oluremi and Kid Konnect. The Son of a Kapenta was supported by three singles: "Ara", "Good Morning" and "Go Hard". The album suffered a botched roll out and wasn't given the full big label push. As a result of this, it was included on The Nation's list of the "Albums that failed commercially in 2012".
