Murder of Ari Fuld

Ari Fuld, an American-Israeli who lived in the Israeli settlement of Efrat, was stabbed to death by a Palestinian at the Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank on 16 September 2018. [1] [2] [3]

Events

Ari Fuld, 45, was born in New York and immigrated to Israel in 1994. The married father of four lived in the Israeli settlement of Efrat. A Holocaust survivor's grandson, Fuld was a fourth-degree black belt who served in an elite unit in the Israeli paratroopers. He was well-known on social media for his pro-Israel advocacy, and worked for an organization that supports Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers. He was known to give care packages to IDF soldiers fighting in Gaza. [4] [5] [6]

On 16 September 2018, while waiting outside of a shopping mall at the Gush Etzion Junction, Fuld was stabbed in the back by 17-year-old Palestinian named Khalil Yusef Ali Jabarin. [7] Mortally wounded, Fuld chased Jabarin, jumped over a small wall, and his legs buckled. [1] After righting himself, Fuld pulled his gun and shot Jabarin. Security video footage showed that Fuld chased and fired at Jabarin before collapsing. [8] Fuld was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. [7] Jabarin was taken to a hospital and survived. [9]

Fuld was credited with possibly saving the life of a mall employee when he stopped the terrorist, who ran at the woman with his knife drawn. The employee said that Fuld is "not just a hero. He gave his life for me." [1] Thousands of people attended Fuld's funeral in Kfar Etzion. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Fuld's family before the funeral and later tweeted, "I embraced [the family] in the name of the entire nation in this time of terrible grief. We are alive thanks to heroes like Ari. We will remember him forever." [10] [11] Retired British army officer Richard Kemp said that Fuld was "a soldier to the last". [6]

It was first reported that Jabarin's mother, from the village of Yatta, informed Palestinian and Israeli security forces that Jabarin planned to carry out a terrorist attack. [12] However, in court it was revealed that his mother came to the checkpoint searching for her son and that she did not inform the soldier why. [13] The day after Fuld's murder, IDF soldiers raided the Jabarin home to map out the building and prepare it for demolition. [14] [15] The IDF released a statement that they will destroy the Jabarin's home in order "to act determinedly to prevent terror attacks and to deter terrorists". [16] The Jabarin family appealed the demolition, but Israel's Supreme Court rejected the appeal. [17] The home was ultimately blown up by the IDF. [18]

Jabarin was arrested for murder, three counts of attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed weapon. The Judea Juvenile Military Court ordered that he remain in custody until the end of the trial. [19] Jabarin was convicted of Fuld's murder in January 2020 after a closed trial. [20] He was sentenced to life in prison, the Fuld family was awarded 1.25 million shekels ($365,000) in damages. [21] It was reported that the Palestinian Authority will pay Jabarin's family NIS 1,400 (nearly $400) a month for three years. [22] An anti-"Pay for Slay" law had earlier been passed in Israel to stop such financial support; however, the Jerusalem Post reported that the law had yet to be implemented. [23] [22] [24] [25]

The 2014 Gush Etzion kidnapping and murder refers to the abduction and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank during June 2014. The victims, Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaer, and Naftali Fraenkel, were Israeli students aged 16 and 19. On the evening of 12 June 2014, the three teenagers were hitchhiking in the Alon Shvut settlement in Gush Etzion, in the West Bank when they were abducted.

The 2014 Alon Shvut stabbing attack occurred on 10 November 2014, when Palestinian Maher al-Hashlamun first attempted to run his vehicle into a crowd waiting at the bus/hitch-hiking station at the entrance to the Israeli settlement of Alon Shvut, in the Gush Etzion section of the occupied West Bank, then, when the car was stopped by a bollard, got out and attacked with a knife, killing a young woman and wounding two others. The attack occurred four hours after the killing of Sergeant Almog Shiloni in Tel Aviv and took place at the same bus/hitch-hiking stop where three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped and murdered in June 2014.

Sergeant Almog Shiloni of the Israel Defense Forces was killed on 10 November 2014 after he was stabbed multiple times at Tel Aviv HaHagana Railway Station. He died in hospital from his wounds. Shiloni was off-duty, but in uniform and armed at the time.

The kidnapping and murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir occurred early on the morning of 2 July 2014. Khdeir, a 16-year-old Palestinian, was forced into a car by Israeli citizens on an East Jerusalem street. His family immediately reported the fact to Israeli Police who located his charred body a few hours later at Givat Shaul in the Jerusalem Forest. Preliminary results from the autopsy suggested that he was beaten and burnt while still alive. The perpetrators subsequently claimed that the attack was a response to the abduction and murder of three Israeli teens on 12 June. The murders contributed to a breakout of hostilities in the 2014 Israel–Gaza conflict.

An increase of violence occurred in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict starting in the autumn of 2015 and lasting into the first half of 2016. It was called the "Intifada of the Individuals" by Israeli sources, the Knife Intifada, Stabbing Intifada or Jerusalem Intifada by international sources because of the many stabbings in Jerusalem, or Habba by Palestinian sources. 38 Israelis and 235 Palestinians were killed in the violence. 558 Israelis and thousands of Palestinians were injured.

A married Israeli couple from Neria, Eitam Simon Henkin, a doctoral student at Tel Aviv University who also held American citizenship, and Na'ama Henkin, a graphic designer, were shot and killed on October 1, 2015, in the West Bank. The Henkins were driving past the town of Beit Furik, when the attack occurred. The Henkins' four children were in the van at the time of their parents' killing.

On 19 November 2015, a Palestinian gunman opened fire on a line of traffic near Alon Shvut in the West Bank and continued to fire as he drove the car towards Gush Etzion Junction where he lost control of the vehicle, which then crashed into another vehicle. As a result, 3 civilians were killed and 5 were wounded.

On 30 June 2016, a 17-year-old Palestinian male broke into a home in the Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba and stabbed to death Hallel Yaffa Ariel a thirteen year old Israeli-American citizen in her bedroom. The attacker was then fatally shot by security guards. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed "incitement-driven terrorists" while the U.S. State Department condemned the "outrageous terrorist attack".

The 2017 Jerusalem Light Rail stabbing was a stabbing attack and suspected act of terrorism that occurred on Good Friday, 14 April 2017, on Jerusalem Light Rail's car. In the attack, a 20 year old British student was stabbed to death by Jamil Tamimi, a Palestinian man. Two others, including a pregnant woman, were injured in the incident. The attacker was arrested and was deemed competent to stand trial.

The Halamish attack, or the Halamish massacre was a terrorist attack on a Jewish family in the West Bank Israeli settlement of Halamish, that took place on 21 July 2017, in which three Israelis were stabbed to death and one severely wounded. The victims of the attack were Yosef Salomon, his daughter Chaya and son Elad, the three who were murdered in the attack, and Tova Salomon, Yosef's wife, who was injured but survived.

On 2 August 2017, a 19-year old Palestinian teen critically injured an Israeli civilian with a knife at a local supermarket in the city of Yavne, located in the Central District of Israel. The attacker was subsequently arrested after being captured by civilians who were at the spot. Police confirmed the attack was an act of terrorism.
