Murder of Joshua Wilkerson

On November 16, 2010, eighteen-year-old Joshua Wilkerson was murdered by his classmate Hermilo Moralez, who was an illegal immigrant to the United States from Belize. [1] [2] Both boys were students at an alternative school for at-risk students in Pearland, Texas (a suburb of Houston). [2] Wilkerson was reported missing after his abandoned truck was located in a strip mall parking lot. [1] [2] A massive search began on the morning of November 17. Moralez, who was nineteen at the time of the murder, became a suspect when the police noticed him loitering in the area near Wilkerson's abandoned truck. [2] At first he denied having anything to do with the crime, but he gave the police false information about his identity which raised their suspicions. Moralez eventually confessed and led officers to the body. [3] [2]

According to court documents, Moralez stated that Wilkerson gave him a ride home from school on November 16. [4] [3] He claimed they began to argue and got out of the truck. [3] He confessed to using a large wooden rod to beat Wilkerson to death. [3] Moralez stated that he then put the body into Wilkerson's truck and drove to a desolate location where he dumped the body. [4] [3] Wilkerson's body was found with his hands and feet tied. [4] [3] He had been severely beaten, strangled, tortured, and burned. [4] [3] The condition of Wilkerson's body, and the fact that he was tied up, raised questions as to whether the murder was simply an argument that got out of hand, or an intentionally planned murder. [4] [3]

Moralez was charged with first-degree murder, failure to identify, and attempting to take a weapon from an officer. [2] Investigators said Moralez, while handcuffed, tried to pull a detective's weapon from his holster as they jumped a fence in a field. [3] [2] He was immediately restrained, police said. [3] He also provided a false identity when he was questioned. [2] During his trial, Moralez took the stand in his own defense and admitted to beating Wilkerson in his home after the two had an argument. [3] Moralez then drove Wilkerson's body across the county line and left it in a rural area. [4] [5] After the jury deliberated less than 30 minutes, Moralez was convicted and then sentenced to life in prison. [6] [7] [5] Moralez appealed his conviction, but the court overruled all of his issues, and affirmed the judgment of the trial court. [8]

Less than five months before the murder, Moralez had been convicted of harassment of his ex-girlfriend and jailed. However, the authorities failed to recognise him as an illegal immigrant on that occasion and therefore failed to deport him. [9]

Mother's campaigning

In 2015 the victim's mother, Laura Wilkerson testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her son's murder and the problem of sanctuary cities. She stated: "You're officially notified today there is a problem when this happens," and "You're either for Americans or you're not!" [10] Ms. Wilkerson has made false claims [11] associating Presidential candidate Kamala Harris with Joshua Wilkerson's murder.

Jeffrey Mark Deskovic is an American attorney from Peekskill, New York known for freeing the wrongly convicted. In 1990, at the age of 17, he was convicted of raping, beating, and strangling his Peekskill High School classmate, Angela Correa, who was 15 at the time of the murder.

On July 1, 2015, 32-year-old Kathryn "Kate" Steinle was shot and killed while walking with her father and a friend along Pier 14 in the Embarcadero district of San Francisco. She was hit in the back by a single bullet. The man who fired the gun, José Inez García Zárate, said he had found it moments before, wrapped in cloth beneath a bench on which he was sitting, and that when he picked it up the weapon went off. The shot ricocheted off the concrete deck of the pier and struck the victim, who was about 90 feet (27m) away. Steinle died two hours later in a hospital as a result of her injuries.

Ten people – eight students and two teachers – were fatally shot, and thirteen others were wounded. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17-year-old student at the school, was taken into custody. The shooting is the eighth-deadliest school shooting in the United States.

On July 18, 2018, Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts, a 20-year-old University of Iowa student, disappeared while jogging near her home in Brooklyn, Iowa. A month later, police identified 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera as a suspect in connection with the disappearance; surveillance footage showed Rivera's car following Tibbetts on her jog. Rivera led police to the body of Tibbetts in a Poweshiek County cornfield on August 21. He was charged with first-degree murder. On May 28, 2021, Rivera was found guilty of first-degree murder. On August 30, 2021, Rivera was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

On June 16, 2024, Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old American girl, was killed in North Houston, Texas. The case attracted national attention, as two illegal immigrants from Venezuela were charged with her murder. Authorities found her body the next morning in a creek in North Houston, and determined she had been raped and murdered by strangulation.
