Mynydd Mawr Hospital (Welsh : Ysbyty Mynydd Mawr) was a community hospital at Upper Tumble, Llanelli, Wales. It was managed by the Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Welsh ; [kəmˈrɑːɨɡ](listen)) or y Gymraeg is a Brittonic language of the Celtic branch of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa. Historically, it has also been known in English as 'British', 'Cambrian', 'Cambric' and 'Cymric'.

A community hospital can be purely a nominal designation or have a more specific meaning. When specific, it refers to a hospital that is accessible to the general public, and provides a general or specific medical care which is usually short-term, in a cost-effective setting, and also focuses on preventing illnesses and not only treating them. Llanelli is the largest town in both the county of Carmarthenshire and the preserved county of Dyfed, Wales. Located on the Loughor estuary, approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Swansea and 12 miles (19 km) southeast of the county town, Carmarthen, Llanelli is famous for its proud rugby tradition and for being a centre of tinplate production.

History

The hospital was established as the West Wales Isolation Hospital in the 1920s.^[1]^[2] It joined the National Health Service in 1948 and it was extended in the 1970s.^[1] After services transferred to the Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, Mynydd Mawr Hospital closed in October 2013.^[3]

The NHS in England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and the affiliated Health and Social Care (HSC) in Northern Ireland were established together in 1948 as one of the major social reforms following the Second World War. The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, apart from dental treatment and optical care. The English NHS also requires patients to pay prescription charges with a range of exemptions from these charges.
