Mzwandile McDonald Masala (20 February 1938 –2 May 2023) was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1997 to 2004. He was the South African Ambassador to Zambia from 2004 to 2007.
During apartheid,Masala was active in the ANC underground in the Eastern Cape. He joined Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1962 and was arrested in 1964 for his MK activities. He spent 11 years on Robben Island and upon his release was banned. In later years,he was a founding member of the United Democratic Front,and he served as deputy provincial chairperson of the ANC's Eastern Cape branch from 1994 to 1996.
Masala was born on 20 February 1938 [1] in Alice in the former Cape Province. [2] He joined the African National Congress (ANC) at an early stage of the anti-apartheid struggle after moving to Port Elizabeth in his youth. [2] In 1962,two years after the apartheid government banned the ANC,Masala went into exile to undergo military training with the ANC's new armed wing,Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK),in Ethiopia and Algeria. [2] When he returned to South Africa in 1964 to carry out an MK operation in Soweto,he was arrested by the Security Branch and sentenced to 11 years' imprisonment on Robben Island. [2] [3]
Upon his release from prison in 1976,he was subject to a banning order which prohibited him from participating in political activities and banished him to the Ciskei bantustan. He nonetheless remained active in the ANC's underground structures and was a founding member of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in 1983. [2] When the ANC was unbanned in 1990,he was involved in re-establishing its above-ground structures in the Eastern Cape, [2] and he served as deputy provincial chairperson of the party's Eastern Cape branch from 1994 until 1996,when he was succeeded by Stone Sizani. [4]
In 1997, [2] Masala joined the National Assembly,the lower house of the post-apartheid South African Parliament,where he filled a casual vacancy. [5] He was re-elected to full terms in 1999 [1] and 2004, [6] serving the Eastern Cape constituency. He resigned on 29 June 2004,ceding his seat to Peter Hendrickse. [7]
Masala left Parliament to join the diplomatic service,serving as South African Ambassador to Zambia from 2004 to 2007. [2]
After his retirement,Masala remained active in the ANC Veterans' League. [2] In December 2012,he was among the MK members awarded military medals as members of the so-called Luthuli Detachment,the first generation of MK recruits in the 1960s. [2] [3] In October 2016,he was one of 101 ANC stalwarts who signed an open letter expressing concern about the direction of the ANC under President Jacob Zuma,among other things criticising the party's "departures from [its] values" and inadequate response to indications of state capture. He died on 2 May 2023 in a hospital in Cape Town after a brief illness. [2] [3]
Raymond Mphakamisi Mhlaba OMSG was an anti-apartheid activist,Communist and leader of the African National Congress (ANC) also as well the first premier of the Eastern Cape. Mhlaba spent 25 years of his life in prison. Well known for being sentenced,along with Nelson Mandela,Govan Mbeki,Walter Sisulu and others in the Rivonia Trial,he was an active member of the ANC and the South African Communist Party (SACP) all his adult life. His kindly manner brought him the nickname "Oom Ray".

Tony Sithembiso Yengeni is a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. He represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from May 1994 to March 2003,including as Chief Whip of the Majority Party from November 1998 to October 2001. He was a member of the ANC National Executive Committee between 1994 and 2022,though he resigned from legislative politics after he was convicted of fraud in 2003.
Steve Vukhile Tshwete was a South African politician and activist with the African National Congress. Involved in Umkhonto we Sizwe,Tshwete was imprisoned by the apartheid authorities on Robben Island from February 1964 to 1978. Tshwete resumed activities with the ANC and become a regional coordinator for the new United Democratic Front. He later lived in exile in Zambia. After the first free elections in South Africa in 1994,he became the new government's first Sports Minister and later was Minister of Safety and Security.
Amos Fish Mahlalela is a South African politician from Mpumalanga who was the Deputy Minister of Tourism from May 2019 until June 2024 and represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from May 2014 until May 2024. In June 2023,he was additionally elected as the Provincial Chairperson of the ANC Veterans' League in Mpumalanga.
Ephraim Phumuga Mogale was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. The inaugural president of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS),he was an underground operative for Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in the Northern Transvaal and was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1980 to 1985. After the end of apartheid,he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly and Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature.
Zoliswa Albertina Kota-Mpeko is a South African politician from the Western Cape. A member of the African National Congress (ANC),she served as Deputy Minister of Human Settlements between May 2009 and May 2019. She served six terms in the National Assembly of South Africa.
Nkosinathi Benson Fihla is a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2013. He subsequently served as Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from March 2013 until May 2015. Fihla first joined the ANC in 1954 through its Youth League and he was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1964 to 1978 for his work with Umkhonto we Sizwe.
Johannes Phumani Phungula was a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009. A veteran of the Defiance Campaign,he joined the ANC in 1952 and spent several decades as an underground operative for Umkhonto we Sizwe in rural Natal,working closely with Jacob Zuma. He was awarded the Order of Luthuli in Gold posthumously in December 2009.
Letsau Nelson Diale was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist from Limpopo. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1956 and served eight years' imprisonment on Robben Island,from 1964 to 1972,for his work with Umkhonto we Sizwe. After the end of apartheid,he represented the ANC in the National Council of Provinces from 1994 to 1999 and in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2014.
David Mtheteleli Dali was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2001 to 2009. A former Umkhonto we Sizwe operative,he subsequently served as a special adviser to Lulu Xingwana,the Minister of Women,Children and People with Disabilities,from 2009 until June 2012,when he was shot dead on his farm in the Eastern Cape.
Cikizwa Ivy Gcina was a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2009. During apartheid,she was a prominent figure in community organising in Port Elizabeth,particularly through the United Democratic Front and the Port Elizabeth Women's Organisation,the women's wing of the Port Elizabeth Black Civic Organisation.

Johannes Mandla "Ka" Shabangu is a South African politician and former anti-apartheid activist. He joined Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in the aftermath of the 1976 Soweto uprising,and in 1981 he was convicted of high treason and a grenade attack on a black policeman. He spent two years on death row before his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 1983;he was released from Robben Island in the early 1990s.
