N. K. Venkataramana is an Indian neurosurgeon [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] and the founder of ANSA Research Foundation, [6] a non profit non governmental organization promoting research on neuroscience, neurological disorders, cancer biology, stem cells and tumor tissue repository.[ citation needed ] He is a recipient of Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category and the Rajyotsava Prashasti, the second highest civilian award of the Government of Karnataka. [7] [8]
N. K. Venkataramana graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati and secured a master's degree (MCh) in neurosurgery [4] after which he completed fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. [2] [7] [8] He also underwent advanced training at Nordtstud Krankenhause, Germany and secured a fellowship. [2] [7] [8] His career started as an assistant professor at NIMHANS in 1986 where he stayed till 1991 to move to Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru [9] as a consultant neurosurgeon. [2] [7] [8] In 2001, he founded the Manipal Institute for Neurological Disorders, [7] Neurosciences division of the hospital. [2] [8] In 2007, he moved to BGS Global Hospital as a director and established Global Institute of Neurosciences at Kengeri, a suburb of Bengaluru. [2] [3] [8] He worked as the chief neurosurgeon of the institute and as the vice chairman of BGS Global Hospitals. Venkataramana is a member of the Neurological Society of India, Indian Society for Cerebro Vascular Surgery, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, International Society of Paediatric Neurosurgery, New York Academy of Sciences, Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Indian Society of Palliative Medicine, Stemcell Research Forum of India, Indian Society of Oncology and Common Wealth Association for Mental Handicap and Developmental Disabilities. Venkataramana is credited with over 25000 neurosurgeries over the past 30 years. [2] [7] [3] [8] Reports credit him with the first neuroendoscopic surgery, CT Guided stereotactic surgery, Deep Brain Stimulation surgery for Parkinson's disease and sacral nerve stimulation for neurogenic bladder dysfunction in Karnataka. [2] [8] He has performed the Disc Nucleoplasty for lumbar and cervical disc prolapse and the transplantation of autologous bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells for Parkinson's disease for the first time in India. Venkataramana has published over 75 papers in peer reviewed national and international journals and has contributed chapters in various text books on neurosurgery. [2] [7] [3] He has also conducted several continuing medical education (CME) programmes and has delivered keynote addresses at many conferences. [2] He is the founder of ANSA Research Foundation and Comprehensive Trauma Consortium, [2] [7] both non governmental organizations involved in research on neurological disorders. [8] [3] [10] He has also founded the Dhanwantari Trust for providing free medical treatment to the poorer sections of the society [10] and established a free ambulance service, CTC Sanjeevani, in Karnataka. [8] [10] His involvement has been reported in many medical emergencies in and around the state of Karnataka [14] [15] [16] and his contribution is reported in the establishment of the first brain tumour bank in India. Venkataramana is a recipient of the Silver Jubilee Award of NIMHANS for the best outgoing student in 1986. [2] [7] He has been felicitated by the Rotary International three times (2001, 2003 and 2006) and the Lions Club twice (2001 and 2005). [2] [7] [8] In 2002, he received the Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, followed by Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award in 2006 and PRCI Chanakya Award in 2007. [2] [7] [8] The Government of Karnataka awarded him Rajyotsava Prashasti, their second highest civilian award in 2008. [2] [7] He is also a recipient of NTR Award and the 2011 Sir M. Visvesvaraya Global Leadership Award. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) is a medical college and medical research public university located in Bengaluru, India. NIMHANS is the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country, the institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
H. Richard Winn is an American neurosurgeon and Professor of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Winn was Chairman of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine from 1983-2002. Winn has made numerous contributions to the field of neurosurgery, specifically to the physiology of cerebral blood flow regulation and clinical studies of the natural history of cerebral aneurysms. A leading international Neurosurgical Prize is named after Dr. Winn.
Paul Bucy was an American neurosurgeon and neuropathologist who was a native of Hubbard, Iowa. He is known both for his part in describing the Klüver–Bucy syndrome, his academic life as a teacher in the neurosciences, and for his founding in 1972 and editing Surgical Neurology – An International Journal of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience" from 1972 to 1987.
Ablative brain surgery is the surgical ablation by various methods of brain tissue to treat neurological or psychological disorders. The word "Ablation" stems from the Latin word Ablatus meaning "carried away". In most cases, however, ablative brain surgery doesn't involve removing brain tissue, but rather destroying tissue and leaving it in place. The lesions it causes are irreversible. There are some target nuclei for ablative surgery and deep brain stimulation. Those nuclei are the motor thalamus, the globus pallidus, and the subthalamic nucleus.
Ramamurthi Balasubramaniam was an Indian neurosurgeon, author, editor, a pioneer in neurosurgery in India and often recognized as the Father of Neurosurgery of India. He set up the Department of Neurosurgery at the Government General Hospital, Chennai in 1950, the Department of Neurosurgery at the Madras Medical College and founded the Institute of Neurology, Madras in the 1970s. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and the Dhanvantri Award for his contribution to the field of Neurosurgery in India.

Sunkara Balaparameswara Rao is an Indian neurosurgeon in Hyderabad, India. He was called the "Father of Neurosurgery" in Andhra Pradesh and has been awarded the Dr. B. C. Roy Award for organizing and developing neurosurgery in Andhra Pradesh. In 2008, he was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences. In 2015, he was awarded Lifetime Achievement award by the Telangana government.

Alim Louis Benabid is a French-Algerian emeritus professor, neurosurgeon and member of the French Academy of Sciences, who has had a global impact in the development of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. He became emeritus professor of biophysics at the Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble in September 2007, and chairman of the board of the Edmond J. Safra Biomedical Research Center in 2009 at Clinatec, a multidisciplinary institute he co-founded in Grenoble that applies nanotechnologies to neurosciences.
Eben Alexander Jr was an American academic neurosurgeon and a native of Knoxville, Tennessee. He is known for his notable education and training of neurosurgeons, his many recognition awards, and for his editorship of Surgical Neurology — An International Journal of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience from 1987 to 1994.
Ravivarma Marthanda Varma was an Indian neurosurgeon, one of the pioneers of Indian neurosurgery and the founder director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). He was the originator of a new surgical procedure for treating Parkinson's disease which later came to be known as Varma's Technique. He was a former Deputy Director General of Health Services, Government of India and an honorary surgeon to R. Venkataraman, former president of India. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1972 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
The Krembil Research Institute (Krembil), formerly known as the Toronto Western Research Institute, is a non-profit academic medical research institute located in Canada's largest city, Toronto. The Krembil is one the principal research institutes of the University Health Network of academic teaching hospitals associated with the University of Toronto; the Krembil is also one of the largest research institutes in Canada focusing on human neurological disease from both a basic science and clinical research perspective. Subramanian Kalyanaraman is an Indian neurosurgeon and a former head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He was known for his pioneering techniques in stereotactic surgery and is an elected fellow of a number of science and medical academies including the National Academy of Medical Sciences and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 1969.
Basant Kumar Misra is a neurosurgeon specialising in treating brain and spine disorders, pathologies and malformations.
