N. Leigh Dunlap (born 1961) is an American graphic designer, actor, illustrator, cartoonist and copywriter. [1] She is best known for her cartoonist contributions named Morgan Calabrese. [2] Throughout her career, Dunlap has published much material surrounding LGBTQ+ activism and was a winner of the 2nd Lambda Literary Award under the humor category. [3]
Dunlap attended Stephens College on an academic scholarship but never finished. [1] In college, she became involved in acting and participated in some local productions. [4]
A majority of Dunlap's publications can be found in The Washington Blade, the oldest LGBTQ+ newspaper in the country. [2] The newspaper chronicles ongoing transformations within the queer community, and Dunlap's comics do no different. [5] She published weekly strips in the newspaper from 1985–1995. [2] Dunlap's publications in the newspaper mainly follow the character Morgan Calabrese, a young, hot-tempered lesbian. Dunlap's comics heavily characterize Morgan, and she has even been called the "lesbian hero of the 90s." [6] Some of her featured panels also include other characters, such as Page Turner. [7] Through her publications in the newspaper, Dunlap created characters that resonated with readers while also forcing them to question their own viewpoints on various issues. [6] While Dunlap's primary focused revolved around LGBTQ+ matters, she also dealt with controversies concerning AIDS, women's music festivals, workplace discrimination, and Reagan-era politics. Again following the character of Morgan Calabrese, Dunlap has published two books that have received acclaim within the community. [9] The first book, titled Morgan Calabrese: The Movie was published in 1987, and the second, Run That Sucker at Six!: the Second Morgan Calabrese Collection, was published in 1989. [7] [10] The first book was published by New Victoria Publishers, whereas the latter was published by St. Martins Press. Switching to St. Martins Press allowed Dunlap to gain more exposure, as New Victoria Publishers was a smaller organization supporting only women. [11] Her books, like the publications in The Washington Blade, align with themes of relationships, life events, and softball. [2]
Dunlap's cartoons are known for their use of humor in addressing potentially sensitive subjects surrounding the LGBTQ+ sphere at the time. [12] Dunlap's works have an important political undertone that is reflective of society's attitudes towards lesbian relationships at the time. [13] She aims to evoke feelings in readers through the clever use of suggestive sketches that are open to varying interpretations. [6] Dunlap's distinctive style implements humor while not undermining the seriousness of issues in the LGBTQ+ sphere at the time. [12] Dunlap's style of cartooning can be described as minimalist, which requires the reader to engage with the text more. [6] Reviews have further labeled Dunlap's work as soft and cutesy, though not in a way that undermines its political undertone. [14] She incorporates elements of queer theory through the main character's attitudes and actions concerning monogamy, lesbianism, feminism, and more. [6] [14] Dunlap and cartoonists similar to her significantly benefitted the visibility and power of the gay community of the time through their newspaper publications. [13] [9] Overcoming publication distribution issues and working within sometimes stringent parameters are just some obstacles Dunlap faced within her cartooning career. [9] Some of Dunlap's main goals through her cartooning involve making lesbians equally visible as gay men, depicting LGBTQ+ relationships as they truly are, and tackling stigma. [9]
Dunlap's cartoons were received well by the public and recognized as playing a role in stimulating social change of the time. [13] Run That Sucker at Six!: the Second Morgan Calabrese Collection was listed as a bestseller in August 1989 by Lambda Rising News. [15]
After retiring cartooning, Dunlap switched to other art projects, including Judaica, graphic design, copywriting and theater. She published much of her work on her Lost Tribes website and blog, both of which she does not update currently. [1]
In 1993, Dunlap published a section in a book titled A Certain Terror: Heterosexism, Militarism, Violence & Change. [16] The book addresses a compilation of subjects, and Dunlap's contribution is titled "What exactly is heterosexuality and what causes it?" Like many of Dunlap's other work, the excerpt addresses themes of feminism, homophobia, and heterosexuality/homosexuality. [16]
In 1987, Dunlap cofounded a lesbian theater company called "Order Before Midnight" with friend Kate Bornstein, whom she met while pursuing graphic design in Philadelphia. [17] The company created two plays, one called the Last Summer at Bluefish Cove and the other called A Late Snow: A Play in Two Acts. [4] Dunlap and Bornstein were able to get some of the highest profile lesbian activists of the time involved.[ citation needed ] The play follows the journey of eight women in Bluefish Cove, one of which is played by Dunlap. [4] Dunlap is an actor in the films, playing the character Lil in Last Summer at Bluefish Cove and Pat in A Late Snow: A Play in Two Acts. [4] The play is considered a landmark piece in Lesbian dramatic literature, and is renowned for its humor, three dimensional characters, and sensitivity towards potentially problematic portrayals. [4] The play was shown in many women's music festivals, and the two were invited to a prestigious art festival known as Sister Space Women's Festival. Notably, this was a new kind of play considering it was a live play. [4]
Dunlap has been married since 1986, and has two children. Her son was born in 1999, and her daughter was born in 2000. [1]
Though Dunlap has always been interested in multiple areas of art, the thing she enjoys the most is acting. The messages that Dunlap attempts to convey in her work are reflective of the experiences she was undergoing in a harsh political climate combined with the rise of AIDS. [13] [5]

Diane DiMassa is an American feminist artist, noted as creator of the alternative cartoon character Hothead Paisan, Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist, whose wild antics have been described as rage therapy for the marginalised. DiMassa is also active in oil painting and street art.
Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist is an alternative comic written and drawn by Diane DiMassa published 1991–1998. It features the title character generally wreaking violent vengeance on male oppressors. Recurring characters include Hothead's cat Chicken, her wise mystical friend Roz, a talking lamp, and her lover Daphne.
Katherine Vandam Bornstein is an American author, playwright, performance artist, actor, and gender theorist. In 1986, Bornstein started identifying as gender non-conforming and has stated "I don't call myself a woman, and I know I'm not a man" after having been assigned male at birth and receiving sex reassignment surgery. Bornstein now identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them and she/her. Bornstein has also written about having anorexia, being a survivor of PTSD and being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
Lambda Literary Awards, also known as the "Lammys", are awarded yearly by Lambda Literary to recognize the crucial role LGBTQ+ writers play in shaping the world. The Lammys celebrate the very best in LGBTQ+ literature. The awards were instituted in 1989.
Howard Cruse was an American alternative cartoonist known for the exploration of gay themes in his comics. First coming to attention in the 1970s, during the underground comix movement with Barefootz, he was the founding editor of Gay Comix in 1980, created the gay-themed strip Wendel during the 1980s, and reached a more mainstream audience in 1995 when an imprint of DC Comics published his graphic novel Stuck Rubber Baby.
Noreen Stevens is a Canadian cartoonist, who illustrated and wrote the lesbian comic strip The Chosen Family. Her work in the field of comics began in 1984. The Chosen Family is featured in the ensemble comic book Dyke Strippers: Lesbian Cartoonists from A to Z alongside the likes of Diane DiMassa and Alison Bechdel.
Ariel Schrag is an American cartoonist and television writer who achieved critical recognition at an early age for her autobiographical comics. Her novel Adam provoked controversy with its theme of a heterosexual teenage boy becoming drawn into the LGBTQ community of New York. Schrag accepts the label of ‘dyke comic book artist’.

Jane's World was a comic strip by cartoonist Paige Braddock that ran from March 1998 to October 2018. Featuring lesbian and bisexual women characters, the strip stars Jane Wyatt, a young lesbian living in a trailer in Northern California with her straight male roommate, Ethan, and follows her life with her circle of friends, romances, and exes. Shortly after celebrating its 20th anniversary, publication ended with Jane marrying Dorothy.
Last Summer at Bluefish Cove is a 1980 American play by Jane Chambers. It is a landmark piece in lesbian dramatic literature as the first mainstream play of its kind.
Mary Wings was an American cartoonist, writer, and artist. She was known for highlighting lesbian themes in her work. In 1973, she made history by releasing Come Out Comix, the first lesbian comic book. She also wrote a series of detective novels featuring lesbian heroine Emma Victor. Divine Victim, Wings' only Gothic novel, won the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Mystery in 1994.
Jennifer Camper is a cartoonist and graphic artist whose work is inspired by her own experiences as a Lebanese-American lesbian. Her work has been included in various outlets such as newspapers and magazines since the 1980s, as well as in exhibits in Europe and the United States. Furthermore, Camper is the creator and founding director of the biennial Queers and Comics conference.

In the early 1990s, a freelance author named Rhonda Dicksion entered the scene as a queer cartoonist. She published multiple lesbian-focused cartoons in a turbulent time for the lesbian community that were considered lighthearted, joyful, and normalizing lesbian as well as interracial relationships. She contributed to multiple LGBTQ+ journals and anthologies. She additionally published her own cartooning books and comics with Naiad press. Later in life, Dicksion went into the Fine Arts sector and pioneered many new techniques in the colored pencil art industry.
