NMS Fulgerul was a gunboat of the Romanian Navy built in France in 1873. She was the first warship to carry the Romanian flag across the sea. She briefly saw service with the Imperial Russian Navy as Velikiy Knyaz Nikolay during the Romanian War of Independence. Fulgerul was transferred to border guards in 1910, and ended her days in 1968 as an oil fuel store at Galati.
Fulgerul was built at La Seyne-sur-Mer near Toulon, France, by Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranée at a cost of 130,000 lei. [1] She was launched and completed in 1873. Her displacement amounted to 85 tons. [2] She was armed with one gun and her power plant generated an output of 25 hp. [3] Fulgerul measured 82 feet (25 meters) in length, with a beam of 15 feet (4.6 meters) and a draught of 4 feet (1.2 meters). [4] The gunboat was also armored, her gun being a Krupp weapon with the caliber of 87 mm. [5] [6] This was initially installed in a turret, but that was found to be unsatisfactory and was removed. [1] She was powered by a steam engine, her top speed amounting to 7 knots. [7] Her bow and aft both ended in iron rams. [8]
Fulgerul was brought from Toulon to Galați between late 1873 and early 1874, by the Romanian Admiral Ioan Murgescu. She thus became the first warship of the Romanian Navy to carry the Romanian flag across the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. [9] The delivery voyage was made without the Krupp gun, which was sent separately by land, for fear of difficulties when passing through Ottoman waters; despite this the ship was detained at Çanakkale in the Dardanelles for several days for inspection, but permitted to continue as she was unarmed. [1] She finally arrived at Galati on 14 April 1874, and the gun was fitted. She was commissioned on 15 June 1874 and also functioned as a training ship. [1]
The gunboat was part of the Danube Flotilla during the Romanian War of Independence of 1877. During the war, she was incorporated by agreement in the Imperial Russian Navy as Velikiy Knyaz Nikolay (Grand Duke Nicholas) and employed, with a mostly Russian crew as a minelayer, laying mine barrages across the Danube in order to restrict the movement of Ottoman warships. [1] [10] At the end of the war in 1878, she was returned to the Romanian navy and reverted to Fulgerul. [1] After another period as a training ship up to 1882, she was declared militarily obsolete in 1886. [1]
On 1 April 1910, Fulgerul was allotted to a newly-created unit of marine border guards and was listed in service in World War I as a coastguard cruiser. [4] [11] By then she was armed with one 6-pdr and one 1-pdr guns. [4] Later, she was reduced to an oil fuel store and later used as such by the shipbuilding yard at Galati. In 1968 Fulgerul was given to the shipyard branch of the Union of Communist Youth (UTC) which sent her for scrapping. [1]

The Romanian War of Independence is the name used in Romanian historiography to refer to the Russo-Turkish War (1877–78), following which Romania, fighting on the Russian side, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. On April 16 [O.S. April 4] 1877, Romania and the Russian Empire signed a treaty at Bucharest under which Russian troops were allowed to pass through Romanian territory, with the condition that Russia respected the integrity of Romania. Consequently, the mobilization of the Romanian troops also began, and about 120,000 soldiers were massed in the south of the country to defend against an eventual attack of the Ottoman forces from south of the Danube. On April 24 [O.S. April 12] 1877, Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire and its troops entered Romania through the newly built Eiffel Bridge, on their way to the Ottoman Empire. Due to great losses, the Russian Empire asked Romania to intervene. On July 24 [O.S. July 12] 1877, the first Romanian Army units crossed the Danube and joined forces with the Russian Army.

Iorgu Iordan was a Romanian linguist, philologist, diplomat, journalist, and left-wing agrarian, later communist, politician. The author of works on a large variety of topics, most of them dealing with issues of the Romanian language and Romance languages in general, he was elected a full member of the Romanian Academy in 1945. He was head of its Institute of Linguistics between 1949 and his retirement in 1962.

Constantin Vasilievici Bivol was a Bessarabian politician and agriculturalist, brother of the more famous politician Nicolae Bivol. Hailing from the ethnic Romanian community of Costești, he was born a subject of the Russian Empire, and saw action with the Imperial Russian Army in World War I. He was a soldiers' delegate to Sfatul Țării, the regional assembly of Bessarabia Governorate, after elections in November 1917; upon the proclamation of a Moldavian Democratic Republic, he veered toward Romanian nationalism, and promoted the Romanian vernacular against the linguistic pluralism championed by Bessarabia's ethnic minorities.
The Galați shipyard, formally Damen Shipyards Galați, is a shipyard located on the Danube in Galați, a city located in the Moldavia region of Romania. It was founded in 1893 as the G. Fernic et Co Mechanical constructions and iron and bronze foundry. In 1897, it was renamed as the G. Fernic et Co Shipyard.

NMS Mihail Kogălniceanu was a Brătianu-class river monitor of the Romanian Navy. She saw service in both world wars, being the most successful vessel in her class of four ships. Like her three sisters, she was initially built as a river monitor, but in early 1918, she was converted to a sea-going monitor. During the Second Balkan War, she supported the Romanian crossing of the Danube into Bulgaria. During World War I, she carried out numerous bombardments against the Central Powers forces advancing along the shore of the Danube and carried out the last action of the Romanian Navy before the 11 November 1918 armistice. She later fought successfully against Bolshevik naval forces during the early months of the Russian Civil War, helping secure the Budjak region.

Ioan Popovici was a Romanian general assigned to the general staff headquarters, during World War I. He attended the Școala Militară de Infanterie și Cavalerie in Bucharest from 1885 to 1887. Afterward he rose through the ranks until he became a brigadier general in 1916 as World War I was raging, engulfing Romania. He was known as "Epure" to distinguish him from another Romanian general with the same name.
After a series of quick tactical victories on the numerically overpowered Austro-Hungarian forces in Transylvania, in the autumn of 1916, the Romanian Army suffered a series of devastating defeats, which forced the Romanian military and administration to withdraw to Western Moldavia, allowing the Central Powers to occupy two thirds of the national territory, including the state capital, Bucharest.

The Battle of Dragoslavele was a military engagement fought between Romanian forces on one side and Central Powers forces on the other. It was part of the Romanian Campaign of World War I. The battle resulted in a Romanian victory and the effective end of Central Powers advances in the area.
