NNS Obuma, formerly NNS Nigeria, was a Nigerian frigate which served as the flagship of the Nigerian Navy from 1965 to 1982. It is presently a hulk stationed at the Nigerian Navy College of Engineering.
The Nigerian government ordered the frigate Nigeria as a purpose-built flagship from Wilton-Fijenoord in the Netherlands [2] at a cost of £ 3,500,000. [1] This was part of an expansion practice which sought to use new ships to balance out the Nigerian Navy's older acquisitions and give the force seagoing capabilities. [3] The Dutch Ministry of Defence loaned the Nigerian Navy another ship, NNS Ogoja, pending the completion of the Nigeria, until it eventually decided to gift the Ogoja to the navy in October 1965. [4]
Nigeria was laid down on 9 April 1964 and launched on 12 April 1965. [5] It began performing sea trials with an all-Nigerian crew later that year. [6] It was designed for a complement of 216 crew. [5]
The Nigeria formally entered service on 16 September 1966 with pennant number F87. [5] Following the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, the Nigerian Navy was tasked with blockading the coast of the secessionist Republic of Biafra. [2] Nigeria was moored in an estuary near Port Harcourt early on in the conflict. In July 1967, Biafran leader C. Odumegwu Ojukwu ordered mercenary Jan Zumbach of the Biafran Air Force to attack the ship to prevent it from cutting off the port to the sea. Zumbach flew a Douglas A-26 Invader with a Douglas DC-3 providing support in an early morning raid. Zumbach dropped his payload and strafed the ship while the DC-3 dropped two small bombs. The first bomb landed off the stern while the second exploded to the ship's port, splashing water over the decks and causing the crew to run for cover. The two aircraft rearmed in Enugu and made a second attack. The bombs missed again, but as a result the Nigeria raised its anchor and moved out into the ocean. [7]
Several weeks after the air raids the ship moved to the mouth of the Bonny River, where it ensured Port Harcourt was cut off from the sea. [7] Too large to operate in Nigeria's rivers, Nigeria served as a guide for smaller ships making their way to the fairway buoy at the mouth of the Bonny, and most naval operations during the war were instead led by the Ogoja. Under the command of Captain Nelson Bossman Soroh, the larger frigate lent its support to bombardment operations at Port Harcourt, Bonny, Calabar, Warri, and other areas. [3]
Nigeria was refitted by Cammell Laird from 1970 to 1971, and again by Wilton-Fijenoord in 1977. [5] The ship was renamed Obuma in 1981, [8] meaning "thunder" in the Igbo language. It was replaced as the fleet flagship by NNS Aradu in 1982. [9] In 1983 it was due to be modernized and have its 102 mm gun mount replaced with an OTO Melara 76 mm, but this was delayed indefinitely. [5] It participated in joint exercises with visiting Brazilian vessels in 1986. [10] By the late 1980s, the ship was reduced to a dockside training hulk, and its helicopter pad was primarily used for ceremonies. [5] By 2020 the hulk served as part of the training facilities at the Nigerian Navy College of Engineering in Sapele. [8]
Biafra, officially the Republic of Biafra, was a partially recognised country in West Africa that declared independence from Nigeria and existed from 1967 until 1970. Its territory consisted of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria, predominantly inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group. Biafra was established on 30 May 1967 by Igbo military officer and Eastern Region governor C. Odumegwu Ojukwu under his presidency, following a series of ethnic tensions and military coups after Nigerian independence in 1960 that culminated in the 1966 anti-Igbo pogrom. The Nigerian military proceeded in an attempt to reclaim the territory of Biafra, resulting in the start of the Nigerian Civil War. Biafra was officially recognised by Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Zambia while receiving de facto recognition and covert military support from France, Portugal, Israel, South Africa and Rhodesia. After nearly three years of war, during which around two million Biafran civilians died, president Ojukwu fled into exile in Ivory Coast as the Nigerian military approached the capital of Biafra. Philip Effiong became the second president of Biafra, and he oversaw the surrender of Biafran forces to Nigeria.
The 46 Knox-class frigates were the largest, last, and most numerous of the US Navy's second-generation anti-submarine warfare (ASW) escorts. Originally laid down as ocean escorts, they were all redesignated as frigates on 30 June 1975, in the 1975 ship reclassification plan and their hull designation changed from 'DE' to 'FF'. The Knox class was the Navy's last destroyer-type design with a steam turbine powerplant.
The Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War, was a civil war fought between Nigeria and the Republic of Biafra, a secessionist state which had declared its independence from Nigeria in 1967. Nigeria was led by General Yakubu Gowon, and Biafra by Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka "Emeka" Odumegwu Ojukwu. The conflict resulted from political, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions which preceded the United Kingdom's formal decolonisation of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963. Immediate causes of the war in 1966 included a military coup, a counter-coup, and anti-Igbo pogroms in the Northern Region. The pogroms and the exodus of surviving Igbos from the Northern Region to the Igbo homelands in the Eastern Region led the leadership of the Eastern Region to conclude that the Nigerian federal government would not protect them and that they must protect themselves in an independent Biafra.
USCGC Chase (WHEC-718) was a Hamilton-class High Endurance Cutter of the United States Coast Guard. She was laid down on October 26, 1966, at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans, launched on May 20, 1967, and commissioned on March 11, 1968. Chase is the fourth of twelve Hamilton class, 378-foot (115 m) cutters, and the third cutter named in honor of Salmon Portland Chase. She was decommissioned on March 29, 2011, and transferred to the Nigerian Navy as an excess defense article under the Foreign Assistance Act as NNS Thunder (F90).

NNS Aradu (F89) is a Nigerian Navy frigate. She is the first of the MEKO 360 general purpose frigates built by the German company, Blohm + Voss. The 125.6-metre ship is the largest in the Nigerian Navy. As a general purpose frigate, Aradu has capabilities for anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare effectively, and participated in the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar. The ship also possesses capability for naval fire support and electronic warfare. Additionally, she carries a ship-borne helicopter for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and enhanced surveillance/detection.

The Invasion of Port Harcourt was a military conflict between Nigerian and Biafran military forces.
Operation Tail-Wind was the final military conflict between Nigeria and Biafra. The operation took place in the towns of Owerri and Uli, both of which were captured by Nigerian forces. The operation ended with General Odumegwu Ojukwu fleeing to the Ivory Coast and then president of Biafra Philip Effiong surrendering to Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Midwest Invasion of 1967 or Midwest Offensive, codenamed Operation Torch, was a military operation between Nigerian and Biafran military forces during the Nigerian Civil War. The invasion began on August 9 when 3,000 Biafran soldiers led by General Victor Banjo crossed the River Niger Bridge into Asaba. Upon reaching Agbor, the Biafrans split up. With the 12th Battalion moving west capturing Benin City and Ore, the 18th Battalion swung south, taking Warri, Sapele and Ughelli, while the 13th Battalion headed north for Auchi, Agenebode and Okene. Simultaneously, a plot to capture Mid-Western Governor David Ejoor at his home in Benin failed. Nevertheless, the Biafrans, meeting virtually no resistance, had seized the entire Mid-Western Region in less than 12 hours.
Operation Tiger Claw was a military conflict between Nigerian and Biafran military forces. The battle took place in the major port of Calabar. The Nigerian were led by Benjamin Adekunle while the Biafrans were led by Maj. Ogbo Oji. The aftermath was a major loss to the Biafrans because it cost the Biafrans one of their largest ports.
Ogbugo Kalu was a Nigerian military officer who served in the Nigerian Army and later the Biafran Army during the Nigerian Civil War. Kalu was also commander of the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) in Kaduna following the 1966 Nigerian coup d'état.
The Nigerian National War Museum in Umuahia showcases the military history of Nigeria with relics form the Biafra-Nigerian Civil War. It has a collection of tanks, armored vehicles, ships, and aircraft all from Nigeria or the defunct Republic of Biafra. Almost all tanks and AFLs are Biafran and all aircraft are Nigerian. It holds in it the evidence of the internal war in Nigeria from 1967 to 1970. The museum is considered a heritage site.

HMS Gifford was one of 23 boats of the Ford class of patrol boats built for the Royal Navy in the 1950s. Gifford was launched on 30 June 1954. In 1968 the vessel was sold to Nigeria and renamed NNS Bonny. Bonny took part in the Nigerian Civil War and was decommissioned in 1983. Bonny is preserved at the Nigerian War Museum in Umuahia.
HMS Montford was one of 23 boats of the Ford class of patrol boats built for the Royal Navy in the 1950s.
HNLMS Van Speijk (F802) was a frigate of the Van Speijk class. The ship was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1967 to 1986. The ship's radio call sign was "PAVA". She was sold to the Indonesian Navy where the ship was renamed KRI Slamet Riyadi (352). The ship was decommissioned in 2019.
