The four-axled, driving railcars NWE T 1 to 3 were intended to provide more cost-effective railway services for the Nordhausen-Wernigeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft during times of low traffic demand. Only the T 1 had seats, the other two only a luggage compartment.
On their takeover by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in East Germany after the Second World War they were given the numbers VT 137 561, 565 and 566. Due to a shortage of spare parts, T 1 and 2 were scrapped around 1965 and only T 3, which is still preserved today, was given a computerised number, 187 025, by the DR in 1972. Since 1993 it has been in the possession of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) and was restored to working condition in 1999 after over 20 years in storage. Unlike the other HSB railcars, this one is painted uniformly in wine red and, with the exception of the 2007 programme, has been used exclusively for special services (during the inspections of the new railcars HSB 187 016 to 019).

A railbus is a lightweight passenger railcar that shares many aspects of its construction with a bus, typically having a bus body and four wheels on a fixed base, instead of on bogies. Originally designed and developed during the 1930s, railbuses have evolved into larger dimensions, with characteristics similar in appearance to a light railcar, with the terms railcar and railbus often used interchangeably. The Harz Narrow Gauge Railways is a railway company that operates a 1,000 mmmetre gauge network in the Harz mountains, in central Germany. The company was formed after the Second World War as a merger of two earlier companies. It owns about 140 kilometres of track, connecting the principal towns of Wernigerode, Nordhausen and Quedlinburg and several smaller settlements in the area. Much of the network is steeply graded and picturesque, but its most popular destination is the Brocken, the highest mountain in the region. The company runs a significant number of its trains with steam haulage, mostly employing 1950s vintage 2-10-2 tank locomotives, hauling traditional open-platform bogie carriages. The company is mainly owned by the various local authorities whose territories it serves.
The NZR RM class Silver Fern was a class of rail motor in New Zealand. The three air-conditioned and sound-proofed 723-kW 96-seater diesel-electric twin-set railcars were built by Kawasaki under contract with Nissho Iwai of Japan. New Zealand Railways classed the railcars RM, like all other railcars.
The NZR RM class Midland railcar was the first successful railcar, and first diesel-powered vehicle, to enter revenue service in New Zealand. Two were built, RM 20 and RM 21, and they ran for five years from 1936 to 1941 before being replaced by larger Vulcan railcars.
