Hull and engine

NYK Virgo has a Burmeister & Wain single screw 12 cylinder engine, with a top speed of 24 knots. It was built in Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries in port number 1717 during 2007.

It is operated by NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd. The power this ship has is 64,033 kilowatts and it weighs about 97,825 tons.

BBC box

In 2009 NYK Virgo delivered the BBC Box back to the United Kingdom. The BBC Box was part of a news report on "globalisation and the world economy" [2] and was sent around the world with a GPS tracker. The box carried various cargoes from Scotch whisky to cat food. The journey lasted a year and covered over 50,000 miles.

MV <i>Aurora</i> (2000) Cruise ship

MV Aurora is a cruise ship of the P&O Cruises fleet. The ship was built by Meyer Werft at their shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. At over 76,000 tonnes, Aurora is the smallest and oldest of six ships currently in service with P&O Cruises. She officially entered service with the company in April 2000 and was named by Anne, Princess Royal in Southampton, United Kingdom. Aurora was refitted in 2014, during which the ship was the first of P&O's ships to receive an updated British Union flag design on her bow and her funnel repainted from yellow to blue.

Nippon Yusen

Nippon Yūsen Kabushiki Kaisha, also known as NYK Line, is a Japanese shipping company and is a member of the Mitsubishi keiretsu. The company has its headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It has a fleet of about 800 ships, which includes container ships, tankers, bulk and woodchip carriers, Ro-Ro car carriers, reefer vessels, LNG carriers, and cruise ships.

Storaa was a 1,980 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1918 by the Greenock & Grangemouth Dockyard Company as Wellpark for British owners. In 1927, she was sold to Belgium and was renamed Navex. A further sale in 1937 saw her renamed Prina. In 1938, she was sold to the Netherlands and was renamed Willy. In 1939, she was sold to Denmark and was renamed Storaa.

SS <i>Empire Brigade</i>

SS Empire Brigade was a 5,184 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1912 as SS Hannington Court. She served through the First World War and was sold in 1936 to Achille Lauro, who renamed her Elios. In 1940 when Italy declared war on France and the United Kingdom she was interned by the UK as a war prize and taken over by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), which renamed her Empire Brigade. Four months later she was torpedoed and sunk by U-99.

BBC Box

The Box or BBC Box was a single ISO intermodal container that was tracked by BBC News between September 2008 and April 2009, as part of a project to study international trade and globalisation. The Box was fitted with tracking equipment and painted in a special one-off livery.

Masuren was a 2,385 ton cargo ship which was built in 1935. She was seized by Britain in 1945 and renamed Empire Annan. In 1950 she was renamed Thomas N Epiphaniades and then Helga Böge in 1952. In 1959, she was renamed Fuhlsbüttel. She served until 1964 when she was scrapped in Bremerhaven.

Seniority was an 2,876 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1942 as Empire Boswell for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Postwar she was sold into merchant service as Aviswell and Seniority, serving until she ran aground on 7 November 1950. Although refloated, she sank on 8 November 1950.

SS <i>Gripfast</i>

Gripfast was a 2,852 GRT coaster which was built in 1941 as Empire Brook for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold into civil service in 1946 and renamed Stancliffe. She ran aground in 1948 and was declared a constructive total loss, having broken her back. Despite this, she was repaired and saw further service as Gripfast, Capetan Costas P, Karine M and Pitsa before sinking when under tow on 6 December 1967.

SS <i>Empire Byron</i>

Empire Byron was a 6,645 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1941 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Completed in January 1942, she had a short service career. Empire Byron was torpedoed and sunk on 5 July 1942 by German submarine U-703 while a member of Convoy PQ 17.

Goodleigh was a 3,857 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1928 by J L Thompson & Sons Ltd, Sunderland for the Dulverton Steamship Company. In 1937 she was sold to Fisser & Van Doornum, Emden and was renamed Christian Van Doornum. She was in port in Canada when war was declared between the United Kingdom and Germany. She was seized as a war prize and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Renamed Empire Commerce, she served until 9 June 1940 when she struck a mine off Margate, Kent. She was beached and her cargo was salvaged, but Empire Commerce was deemed a constructive total loss and was scrapped in situ. She was the first Empire ship lost through enemy action in the Second World War.

Marietta was a 7,059 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1943 as Empire Daring by William Hamilton & Co Ltd, Port Glasgow, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She served in the Mediterranean and then in home waters during World War II. Empire Daring was sold into merchant service in 1946 and renamed Marietta, serving until she was scrapped in 1959.

Gunde Maersk is owned and operated by the A.P. Moller Maersk. Gunde Maersk was one of the largest container ships in the world when she was built. The Gunde Maersk was christened on 10 May 2008 at Maersk Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark.

NYK Venus was one of the largest container ships in the world when it was delivered to its operator, Venus Container Shipping. It is a sister ship to the NYK Vesta. The NYK Venus is owned by Nippon Yusen Kaisa of Japan.

Ocean Network Express Singaporean container shipping company

Ocean Network Express Holdings, Ltd. (ONE) is a Japanese container transportation and shipping company jointly owned by the Japanese shipping companies Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and K Line. It was formed in 2016 as a joint venture, inheriting the container shipping operations of its parent companies. As of 2017, it had a combined fleet size of 1.4 million TEU.
