The Nag's Head Fable was a fiction which purported that Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury under Elizabeth I, was consecrated with a Bible pressed to his neck in the Nag's Head tavern in Cheapside. The story surfaced more than 40 years after Parker's consecration and was spread by some Roman Catholics as fact until the dawn of the 20th century.

Fact and fiction

On the passing of the Act of Uniformity 1559, shortly after the start of Elizabeth I's reign, fourteen bishops were dismissed from their sees, and all the other sees, except Llandaff (then part of the Church of England), were at the time vacant. [1] Matthew Parker had been selected as Archbishop of Canterbury, but there was a question of how to obtain consecration so as to preserve unbroken apostolic succession, as the Bishop of Llandaff, Anthony Kitchin, opposed Parker's appointment and refused to officiate. [1] The allegation of an indecent consecration in the Nag's Head tavern was first made in a controversial book entitled De investiganda vera ac visibili Christi ecclesia libellus, printed at Antwerp by a Jesuit and exiled Anglo-Romanist priest, Christopher Holywood (or Christophorus a Sacrobosco), [2] in 1604, over 40 years after the event.

According to propaganda, John Scory, the deposed Bishop of Chichester, was sent for and officiated at the Nag's Head tavern in Cheapside. [1] There, Parker was supposedly consecrated by having a Bible pressed to his neck while Scory said, "Take thou authority to preach the word of God sincerely." [1]

This story was later discredited, as a full eyewitness description was found of the consecration of Parker, in Lambeth Palace Chapel, by bishops John Scory, William Barlow (chief consecrator), Myles Coverdale, and John Hodgkins. In this account it is stated that it was not the consecration which took place at the Nag's Head, but only that those who took part in it dined there subsequently. [3] [4]

As recently as the late nineteenth century, the legend was still being told as fact by controversialists in such countries as Sri Lanka. [3]

John Overall (1559–1619) was the 38th bishop of the see of Norwich from 1618 until his death one year later. He had previously served as Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, as Dean of St Paul's Cathedral from 1601, as Master of Catharine Hall from 1598, and as Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University from 1596. He also served on the Court of High Commission and as a Translator of the King James Version of the Bible.

Anthony Kitchin, also known earlier as Dunstan Kitchin, was a mid-16th-century Abbot of Eynsham Abbey and then, Bishop of Llandaff in the Catholic Church under Henry VIII and eventually under Mary. He Seems to have had no qualms about the breach with Rome under Henry VIII, the Protestant Reformation under Edward VI and though reconciled as a Catholic under Mary I, accepted to serve when Protestantism returned under Elizabeth I.

Christopher Holywood was an Irish Jesuit of the Counter Reformation. The origin of the Nag's Head Fable has been traced to him.

William Barlow was an English Augustinian prior turned bishop of four dioceses, a complex figure of the Protestant Reformation. Aspects of his life await scholarly clarification. Labelled by some a "weathercock reformer", he was in fact a staunch evangelical, an anti-Catholic and collaborator in the Dissolution of the Monasteries and dismantling of church estates; and largely consistent in his approach, apart from an early anti-Lutheran tract and a supposed recantation under Mary I. He was one of the four consecrators and the principal consecrator of Matthew Parker, as archbishop of Canterbury in 1559.

Francis Mason (c.1566–1621) was an English churchman, archdeacon of Norfolk and author of Of the Consecration of the Bishops in the Church of England (1613), a defence of the Church of England and the first serious rebuttal of the Nag's Head Fable put about as denigration of Matthew Parker and Anglican orders.

David Pole was an English Roman Catholic churchman and jurist; he was Bishop of Peterborough from 1557 until deprived by Queen Elizabeth I.

Anthony Hussey, Esquire, was an English merchant and lawyer who was President Judge of the High Court of Admiralty under Henry VIII, before becoming Principal Registrar to the Archbishops of Canterbury from early in the term of Archbishop Cranmer, through the restored Catholic primacy of Cardinal Pole, and into the first months of Archbishop Parker's incumbency, taking a formal part in the latter's consecration.
