Najma Akhtar (born 1953) is an Indian academic and academic administrator. Since 12 April 2019,she has been the Vice Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia,an Indian university and served their till 12 November 2023. [1] She is also the first woman to hold the post in JMI. [2]
Akhtar was born in 1953. [3] She studied at Aligarh Muslim University,where she was a gold medalist and earned a National Science Talent Scholarship. [4] She has a PhD in Education from Kurukshetra University. [2] [3] [5] She received a Commonwealth Fellowship to study University administration at the University of Warwick in the UK [5] and also trained at the International Institute of Educational Planning at Paris (France).
Akhtar worked for fifteen years at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration,leading courses for senior officials from 130 countries. [4] She established the first state-level management institute at Allahabad and was the Controller of Examination and Director of Academic Programs at Aligarh Muslim University. [4] She has been a consultant to UNESCO,UNICEF and DANIDA. [4] [6]
In April 2019,the Ministry of Human Resource Development received approval from the President of India,Ram Nath Kovind,to appoint Akhtar as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia for a five year term or till attaining the age of 70 whichever is earlier and served their till 12 November 2023. [2] [6] Akhtar has been an advocate for gender equity [4] and is known for leading teams of diverse cultural backgrounds. [3] [7] She said her goal is to establish a medical college at Jamia during her tenure. [8] Of her appointment as the first female vice chancellor in the university's 99 year history,she said,"My aim was not to break the glass ceiling but I was definitely against the glass ceiling. Why is it even there,if you hold the same educational qualifications and experience?” [8]
In 2022,Akhtar was awarded with Padma Shri by the Government of India. [9] On 19 January 2023,she was conferred with the honorary rank of Colonel and appointed “Colonel Commandant”of the University. [10]
Jamia Millia Islamia is a premier central university located in New Delhi,India. Originally established at Aligarh,United Provinces during the British Empire in 1920,it moved to its current location in Okhla in 1935. It was given the deemed status by University Grants Commission in 1962. On 26 December 1988,it became a central university.
Najma Akbar Ali Heptulla is an Indian politician. She was the Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia from 2017 to 2023,until Mufaddal Saifuddin was elected as new Chancellor on 14 March 2023. She was a six time member of the Rajya Sabha,the upper house of the Indian parliament,between 1980 and 2016,and Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for sixteen years when she was a member of Congress. Later she was nominated vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2012,and was a minister from 2014-2016 as a member of BJP in Narendra Modi's first government. From 2016 to 2021,she served as the 16th Governor of Manipur.
Fakhruddin T. Khorakiwala was an Indian businessman and Sheriff of Mumbai. From 2000 until his death,he was the chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. He was a well-known Indian businessman,and founded the Akbarallys group of departmental stores in Mumbai. He acquired Worli Chemical Works which later was incorporated as Wockhardt Ltd,becoming India's 5th largest pharmaceutical company.
Sayed Zahoor Qasim was an Indian marine biologist. Qasim helped lead India's exploration to Antarctica and guided the other seven expeditions from 1981 to 1988. He was a Member of the Planning Commission of India from 1991 to 1996. He was the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia from 1989 to 1991 and an Honorary Professor of universities including Aligarh Muslim University,Madurai Kamaraj University,Anna Malai University,Indian Institute of Technology Madras,and Jamia Millia Islamia. He was awarded the highest civilian awards Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.

Abdul Majeed Khwaja was an Indian lawyer,educationist,social reformer and freedom fighter from Aligarh. In 1920,he along with others founded Jamia Millia Islamia and later served its vice chancellor and chancellor.
Talat Ahmad is an Indian Earth scientist and former professor at department of Geology,University of Delhi. Currently,he is serving as Chairman of Governing body which oversees Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology,Dehradun from December 2021 onwards and has taken full charge from 1 June 2022 and served the office till 30 November 2027. Previously,he commenced his second stint as vice chancellor of University of Kashmir on 6 August 2018 and served the office till 20 May 2022. After serving as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia,he resigned from the post a few months short of his full term. He was shortlisted by a committee constituted by the governor to shortlist a panel for the post. He had earlier taken over as Vice-chancellor of University of Kashmir from Professor Riyaz Punjabi on 1 June 2011. Prior to this,he was teaching geology at the University of Delhi.

The Jamia Millia Islamia attack refers to the forceful entry by Delhi police into the Jamia Millia Islamia university during a confrontation with student protesters that started outside the campus on 15 December 2019. Hundreds of police officers forcefully entered the campus and detained more than a hundred students during the confrontation with the protesters. The police used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters. The police also entered the university library and washrooms and in the process of the violence ransacked parts of it. The visuals of students being dragged and assaulted by the police were telecast by news channels. About two hundred people were injured and were admitted to AIIMS and the Holy Family Hospital.

She has authored dozen of books including Women and Child related Laws,Comparative Constitutional Law and Globalisation of Professional Legal Education Constitutional Conspectus.
Abdul Lateef Azmi was an Urdu litterateur and among the close associates of the founders of Jamia Millia Islamia. He joined Jamia Millia as a student of B.A. in 1936 and served the university over 50 years in various capacities. He was one of the longest serving editors of Jamia Millia's official magazine,Jamia. He died in Delhi on May 11,2002. In 1985,Maktaba Jamia,New Delhi,published a book Abdul Lateef Azmi Hayat-o-Khidmat. Several scholars contributed chapters in the book on various facets of Abdul Lateef Azmi and his life.
