Namse Bangdzod was a 1,950-ton Indonesian cargo ship-oil tanker that went missing on 28 December 2018. The ship departed on 27 December with 1 million liters of crude palm oil (CPO) from Sampit, Central Kalimantan, towards the Port of Tanjung Priok, Jakarta. She was manned by the 12 crewmembers and a captain, who were last-contacted in the early hours of 28 December. [5]
Namse Bangdzod was expected to arrive within a few days, but authorities lost communication in the coastal area the next day on 28 December 2018, and her whereabouts have never been confirmed. [6]
As the ship was sailing on the pre-planned route between 27 and 28 December, the Indonesian Navy recorded changing positions at multiple times via her automatic identification system, but Namse Bangdzod's whereabouts have never been ascertained after last signal was received. Later, the National Search and Rescue Agency acknowledged that the disappearance of the tanker probably began with a pirate hijack, leading to an unexpected disappearance along with eleven crewmembers and a captain. [7] Her status was officially declared missing on 27 January 2019. [8]
Maritime transport experts, Indonesian navy, and other official stated various reasons of Namse Bangdzod's disappearance. Maritime declined the presumed-sunk-claims citing, "It is unlikely that the vessel was adrift at sea as the Navy had found no sign of it". The Indonesian navy has also refused to acknowledge the hijacking-claims as they believed the route has no history of piracy and is considered as the safe one.
Indonesian authorities conducted a massive search to find the missing vessel. The search included four warships around the Java Sea, as well as maritime patrol aircraft from Surabaya to the central part of the country. [6] Despite months-long massive searches, it was declared missing on 27 January 2019. [9]
Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea affects a number of countries in West Africa as well as the wider international community. By 2011, it had become an issue of global concern. Pirates in the Gulf of Guinea are often part of heavily armed criminal enterprises, who employ violent methods to steal oil cargo. In 2012, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), Oceans Beyond Piracy and the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Program reported that the number of vessels attacks by West African pirates had reached a world high, with 966 seafarers attacked during the year. According to the Control Risks Group, pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea had by mid-November 2013 maintained a steady level of around 100 attempted hijackings in the year, a close second behind the Strait of Malacca in Southeast Asia.
The MV Arctic Sea is a cargo ship formerly registered in Malta that was reported missing between late July and mid-August 2009 en route from Finland to Algeria, manned by a Russian crew and declared to be carrying a cargo of timber. Hijackers allegedly boarded the ship off the coast of Sweden on 24 July 2009. The incident was not immediately reported, and contact with the ship was lost on or after 30 July. The Arctic Sea did not arrive at its scheduled port in Algeria and was reportedly located near Cape Verde instead on 14 August. On 17 August, it was seized by the Russian Navy. An investigation into the incident was started amidst speculation regarding the ship's actual cargo, and there were allegations of a cover-up by Russian authorities. The Arctic Sea was towed into harbor in the Maltese capital of Valletta on 29 October 2009.

Operation Dawn of Gulf of Aden was a naval operation by the Republic of Korea Navy against Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea. The operation was spurred by the pirates' seizure of the South Korean chemical tanker Samho Jewelry. In response, the South Korean government sent a destroyer and 30 naval commandos to retake the ship and rescue its crew. After trailing the tanker for several days and fighting a preliminary engagement that neutralized four of the pirates, the South Korean forces retook the ship by force on January 21, 2011, in a successful boarding action that resulted in the deaths of eight and the capture of five out of thirteen pirates.

Operation Dawn 8: Gulf of Aden was a naval operation carried out by the Royal Malaysian Navy against pirates in the Indian Ocean on 20 January 2011. In response to the hijacking of MV Bunga Laurel, the Malaysian Shipborne Protection Team deployed an attack helicopter and 14 members of the naval counter-terrorism group PASKAL in two rigid-hulled inflatable boats to retake the vessel and rescue the crew. After one night of trailing the tanker, the Malaysian forces successfully retook the ship by force on 20 January 2011, resulting in the wounding of three and the capture of four out of 18 pirates, and all 23 vessel crewmembers rescued.
On 11 June 2015, eight Indonesian pirates hijacked the MT Orkim Harmony, a Malaysian tanker, in the South China Sea. The crew and the tanker were freed and recovered on 19 June near the southwest of Phú Quốc in Vietnam with the joint efforts of Royal Malaysian Navy, Royal Malaysian Air Force, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Royal Australian Air Force, Vietnam Border Guard, Vietnam Coast Guard, Indonesian Navy and Royal Thai Navy.
On 18 November 2012, eleven Indonesian pirates hijacked MT Zafirah, a Malaysian tanker, in the South China Sea. The tanker crew was left by the pirates on a lifeboat in the sea two days after the hijacking but were subsequently rescued by Vietnamese fishing vessels on 21 November when their lifeboat was drifting around 118 nautical miles in the waters off Vietnam's southern Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province. All the pirates managed to be tracked by Vietnam Coast Guard and Vietnam People's Navy with information provided by Malaysian based International Maritime Bureau and Singaporean based RECAAP, which led to their arrest after a brief of standoff near Vũng Tàu port.

The 2019 Kerch Strait liquified gas tanker fire was a major incident that occurred on 21 January 2019 when two ships, Kandy and Maestro, caught fire while transferring liquefied gas from one vessel to another in the Kerch Strait. The incident subsequently killed fourteen crewmembers and six went missing, including Libyan, Turkish, and Indian sailors, while twelve men jumped into the water and were rescued by the Russian Navy. Kandy was carrying a crew of seventeen, while Maestro was manned by fifteen crewmembers. At the time of the incident, both ships were carrying 4,500 tonnes of fuel. The ship-to-ship fuel transfer resulted a fire explosion and spread across both ships; Tanzanian-flagged Turkish ships' Maestro and Kandy. The blaze lasted more than four days.
