Nana Konadu Yiadom III is the 14th Asantehemaa of the Asante people. [1] [2]

Early life

Nana Ama Konadu was born Nana Ama Konadu to Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II and Opanin Kofi Fofie of Besease, near Atimatim in the Kwabre District of Ashanti. She is popularly known as Nana Panin as she is the first daughter of the late Asantehemaa. [3] She is the eldest sister of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II. [4] [5]

Reign

Yiadom was enstooled as the Asantehemaa with the stool name Nana Konadu Yiadom III, [6] after succeeding her mother and predecessor Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II who died on 15 November 2016 in her sleep, aged 109. Before her death, her mother reigned as the Asantehemaa (Queen mother) for 39 years. [7] [8] [9]

Yiadom was enstooled as the Asantehemaa on 6 February 2017 and was publicly outdoored as by Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II on 6 May 2017, which also marked Otumfuo's 67th birthday at a ceremony at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. [10] [11] [12] At the time 2017 when she ascended the stool she was 83 years old. [13]

On 6 February 2017, a thanksgiving ceremony and a durbar were held at the Manhyia Palace in commemoration of her 5th anniversary since ascending the Asantehemaa stool. [14]

The Manhyia Palace is the seat of the Asantehene, as well as his official residence. It is located at Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region. The first palace is now a museum. Otumfuor Opoku Ware II built the new palace, which is close to the old one and is used by the current Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II.

Nana Otuo Siriboe is a Ghanaian traditional ruler, electrical engineer and entrepreneur. He is the Omanhene of the Juaben traditional area. Barima Nana Akwasi Agyeman was a Ghanaian civil servant and a member of the Asante Royal family who served as Mayor of Kumasi serving as Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. He was popularly known as Okumkom, literally meaning ''killer of hunger''. He is the longest serving mayor of Kumasi serving for over 20 years as mayor. He died at the age of 86. He was a prominent member of National Democratic Congress.

The Asantehemaa is the queen mother according to West African custom, who rules the Asante people alongside the Asantehene. African queen mothers generally play an important role in local government; they exercise both political and social power. Their power and influence have declined considerably since pre-colonial times, but still persist in the 21st century.
