Major General Nanda Mallawaarachchi RWP, VSV, USP, ndc, psc, Msc (Defense) is the Current Secretary of Sports in Sri Lanka. [1] He was the former Secretary of Law & Order in Sri Lanka. [2] He was also the former Acting Commander & Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army as well as the Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Indonesia. [3]

Early life

He was born in Anuradhapura to Dr. Sirisena Mallawaarachchi & Siriyalatha Athukorale. [4] He graduated from The Central College (Anuradhapura) and later Ananda College in Colombo. [5]

Military career

Mallawaarachchi enlisted into the Sri Lankan Army in 1971, upon his completion of his Officer Cadet training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Sri Lanka Light Infantry in 1972. He has had extensive training in many countries including the United States and India. [6] He was a national champion in practical pistol shooting and is an excellent marksman. [7] Major General Mallawaarachchi served the Sri Lankan Army for over 36 years throughout the island. He has held numerous positions in the Army, among them were The Acting Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, [8] Chief of Staff of the Sri Lankan Army, [9] Regimental commander of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry, [10] 1st ever Security Forces Commander of Eastern area of Operations, [11] General officer Commanding in 52 Division Jaffna, General officer Commanding in 23 Division Minneriya and Commandant and Vice Chancellor of the Kotawala Defence University. [12]

Diplomatic career

He was appointed Ambassador and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Republic of Indonesia in July 2007. [13] [14]

Secretary of Law & Order

On 23 August 2013 President Mahinda Rajapaksa created the Ministry of Law & Order and appointed Mallawaarachchi as Permanent Secretary to the Ministry. The Sri Lanka Police Service and the elite Special Task Force would function directly under the new ministry. [15] [16] [17]

Secretary of Sports

On 24 Oct 2014 Mallawaarachchi was appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Sports (Sri Lanka). He relinquished from his post as Secretary of Law & Order on the same day. [18]

He was the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council until he and his wife were killed on 6 October 2008 by a suicide bomber. The LTTE have been blamed for the bombing by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

General Shavendra Silva, is a Sri Lanka Army four star general who is the current Chief of Defence Staff, the head of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces serving from 1 January 2020. He also served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 19 August 2019 to 31 May 2022. His other important appointments include, Chief of Staff of the army, Adjutant General and Director of Operations of the Army. During the Sri Lankan civil war he gained fame as the General Officer Commanding of the elite 58 Division. General Shantha H.S. Kottegoda, WWV, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP is a retired senior Sri Lanka Army general. He was the seventeenth commander of the Sri Lankan Army from 1 July 2004 – 5 December 2005. He had served as the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Brazil and Thailand. In April 2019, following the Easter Sunday bombings he was appointed as the permanent secretary to the Ministry of Defence.

G. D. H. Kamal Gunaratne, WWV, RWP, RSP, USP is a retired Sri Lankan army general. He is the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and the State Ministry of National Security and Disaster Management. A retired career officer of the Sri Lanka Army, Gunaratne had served as the former Commander Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni, general officer commanding (GOC), 53 Division and was a former Deputy Ambassador to Brazil. He was the GOC of the 53 Division which killed the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran at Nandikadal, Mullaitivu.

General R. M. Daya Ratnayake, WWV, RWP and three Bars, RSP, USP is a former senior Sri Lanka Army officer who served as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army from 2013 to 2015. Following his retirement from the army, he served as the Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Secretary to the Ministry of Industriesiy.
