Nanka (pronounced as Nan-ka by the natives), is an Igbo speaking town in Southeastern Nigeria. The town is bordered by Agulu to the north, the town of Nanka is posited to exist alongside Igboukwu.

Location

Nanka is located in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. Its geographic coordinates are 6" 03' 00 North, 7" 05' 00 East. [1] Its neighboring towns are Oko, Agulu, Ekwulobia, Aguluzigbo, Isuọfia, Umuọna, and Awgbu. Nanka comprises seven villages: Agbiligba, Enugwu, Ifite, Amako, Umudala, Ubahu, and Eti, in that order. Agbiligba is the head village in Nanka with seventeen major kindreds including Umuezekanagha, Umunonoakulu, Umueyisi, Umuka, Ihuowele, Umudunu, Umudim, Oka, Umueneke, Umuene, Umuezenwunne, Umuezehagba, Umuezemenari, Umuene, Umuezenyeka, Umuakuesu, Umuezechiedo.

These Kindreds are the grouped in the five administrative Wards as recognized by the Nanka Town Union and Chieftaincy Constitution, 2011, as follows: Umuezeoke, Abasili 1, Abasili 2, Umudunu, Oka/Umudim.

Facilities

The Nanka Post Office opened the early 20th century. Nanka has one main market, the Afor Market (formerly Afor-Udo) which trades on the Afor market day).

Nanka has two government secondary schools located in Agbiligba [ Community High School ] Nanka village and in Enugu [ Community Secondary School ] in Enugu village. The Nwa-Agu Primary School is at Ifite village, the St.Michael Primary school at Agbiligba village, the Nkwo-Agu Primary also at Agbiligba village, and the Enugwu Nanka Primary school.

In 1992, the Ofu-Obu Hospital opened in Nanka. Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (EEPPNL) later modernized and refurnished the facility. The hospital is presently run by the Anambra State government. It is listed among the Nigerian Maternal and Child Health Care centres in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria

On 26 May 2012, the NEROS Sports Stadium, founded by Chief Poly Ike Emenike, MON, Odenigbo, Nanka, opened in Nanka. On 23 July 2012, the Comprehensive Health Center opened in Nanka.

In November 2018 The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) opened a new outpost (RS5.35a) at the Nkwoagu Junction of Nanka.

Nanka gully erosion

The Agulu-Nanka gully erosion has the potential for an ecological disaster, because the erosion causes frequent landslides. In the Nanka Community, Eke-Ntai in Amako Village, was reported to be a flourishing Slave Market during the period of human trafficking, popularized by Ezenwenwe. The menacing erosion in Nanka today is said to have its origin in the notorious market.

A soil erosion management expert, Benneth Obele, in 2009 wrote that "erosion disaster in Nanka Ududo dates back to the early 1920s when the gully sites were first observed near Eketai Market in Amako Village as well as near Ududonka Shrine. The lucrative and hidden business in human trafficking or slave trade conducted within those two sites led to the development of hidden bush foot pathways that were heavily flooded from neighbouring communities, precipitating gully erosion.” {Nanka Patriotic Union at 80[1], by Patrick Okeke Emezue}

On June 19, 2008, a landslide cut off Amako village from the rest of Nanka. In response, the Nanka Patriotic Union (NPU), social- set up measures for capacity building of inhabitants on application of control measures. Members of the Nanka community donated nearly 10,000 cashew seedlings for erosion control in the 20 erosion sites scattered in the town. [9] The issue was discussed at the Oririji (New Yam) Festival on August 21 of 2010, where Igwe G.N Ofomata, Obu Nanka,{1991 to 2015} addressed the people. Igwe Joseph Nwankwo Ezenekwe was traditional ruler of Nanka from 1977–1982. [10]

Nkpor is a town in Idemili North local government area of Anambra state. The town of Nkpor had an estimated population of 109,377 in 2007. It is attached to the much larger city of Onitsha to the west, Oze to the north, Ogidi and Umuoji to the east, and Obosi to the south. The name 'Nkpor' is derived from the adulteration of the Igbo word nkpogha meaning 'repositioning'.Nkpor is known for its farming prowess. There is a maize known as ‘akpu aka Nkpor’ because of its robust yield and is reminiscent of Nkpor men who are often muscular. In ancient times, a rich man is known in Nkpor for his rich yam barn and the number of animals in his pen. An average Nkpor indigene does not buy foodstuff in the market and does not deny his visitors food. Nkpor is a traditional Community that worshiped the God of their ancestors before the advent of Christianity.

Ihite is a town in Orumba South Local Government Area in Anambra State, Nigeria. It is located south-east of the local government area on the Nnobi-Ekwulobia-Ufuma-Umunze-Ibinta-Okigwe federal trunk road. Ihite shares boundaries with Umunze in Anambra State, Aondizuogu, Ndiochi and Okannachi in Imo state, and Nneato in Abia State.

Alor is one of the seven communities comprising the Idemili South Local Government of Anambra State in the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It is surrounded by seven neighbouring towns, namely Oraukwu, Nnobi, Abatete, Ideani, Uke, Adazi Ani and Nnokwa. Nnewi North is a Local Government Area in Anambra State, south-central Nigeria. Nnewi is the only town in Nnewi North LGA. The traditional ruler of Nnewi- Igwe of Nnewi -presently is Igwe Kenneth Orizu the 3rd of which this royal family is from Otolo Nnewi, and for this reason, is regarded as first among equals of the four villages. Other traditional rulers exist in other villages and they oversee the traditional affairs of their respective villages, amongst which are Obi Nnamdi AC Obi (ogidi) who is obi of Uruagu, Obi Umudim And obi Onyekaba Of Nnewichi. In this vein one may ask who is now Obi of Otolo since the royal family of Igwe oversees the traditional affairs of entire nnewi.

Agulu is also known for the Agulu-Nanka erosion sites. Agulu comprises twenty villages. Aguluzigbo is a Town in Anaocha Local Government of Anambra State, Nigeria. It comprises six villages: Iruowelle, Etuleze, Ihulu, Ufa, Ifite and Nduana. It is bordered by seven towns and they are Agulu, Ora-eri, Akwaeze, Igbo-ukwu, Nanka, Obeledu and Umuona. There are various pointers to the origin of the name. One version has it that the name "Aguluzigbo" is a shortened way of saying "Agulu nke di na uzo e si eje Igbo-ukwu" which translated in English would mean "The Agulu which is along the route to Igbo-ukwu". Apparently, the description serves to distinguish it from its neighbouring town which also goes by the name "Agulu".

Oko Town is an Igbo speaking town in south eastern Nigeria. It is one of the 16 towns that make up the geopolitical area called Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra state. It is the major economic town of the local government largely dependent on a very large student community and staff strength of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

The Isu people are the largest group of the Igbo people of Nigeria. Isuama, in which the purest Igbo is said to be spoken, is to be found the heart of the Igbo nationality; consequently it is quite reasonable to look among its people for the original fountain-head from which all the other clans have sprung. This inference too is supported not only by the purity of the language, but by this right of dispensing or rather of confer-ring royalty which is undoubtedly the prerogative of the Nri or N'shi people. In the pre-colonial era, the Igbo people were protected from external invasion by the dense forests of the region, which also had the effect of encouraging diversity. Thus as warriors the neighboring Oratta (Uratta) people looked down on the Isu people, who were traders.

Afiaolu is a traditional festival held annually in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria around August. The Afiaolu festival commences on “Eke” day with what is traditionally described as “Iwaji” and Ikpa Nku, this heralds the availability of new yam as well as thanksgiving to God. The festival includes a variety of entertainments including performance of ceremonial rites by the Igwe (king), cultural dance by girls and masquerade dance.

Mmaku is a town in the Awgu local government area of Enugu State, Nigeria. The name Mmaku means "Welcomer" or "Embracer". Another derivation comes from the English language, and it means "beauty of wealth."

Nawfia is a town in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. Nawfia is surrounded by neighbouring towns namely Enugwu Ukwu, Awka (Umuokpu), Nise, Amawbia and Enugwu Agidi. It is predominantly occupied by the Igbo ethnic group and is believed to be one of the towns that make up the ancestral home of Igbo people. Most of its inhabitants are Christians. Igbo and English are the predominant languages spoken in Nawfia.

Nimo Owelle, also known as Nimo, is a large town in southeastern Nigeria. As of 2021, the traditional ruler of Nimo is Igwe Max Ike Oliobi.

Amaetiti is a town in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, located in the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria.
