The Nankai 2300 series(南海2300系) is a two-car electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by the private railway operator Nankai Electric Railway in Japan since 2005. [1]
An electric multiple unit or EMU is a multiple-unit train consisting of self-propelled carriages, using electricity as the motive power. An EMU requires no separate locomotive, as electric traction motors are incorporated within one or a number of the carriages. An EMU is usually formed of two or more semi-permanently coupled carriages, but electrically powered single-unit railcars are also generally classed as EMUs. The great majority of EMUs are passenger trains, but versions also exist for carrying parcels and mail.
Nankai Electric Railway Co., Ltd. is a private railway in Japan, founded in 1884. The name Nankai comes from the company's routes along the Nankaidō, the old highway that ran south from the old capital, Kyoto, along the sea coast. Nankai predates all the electric railways in the Tokyo region.
The 2300 series design was developed from the earlier 2000 series EMUs first introduced in 1990. [1] The car bodies are stainless steel, with fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) cab ends. [1]
Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) is a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibres. The fibres are usually glass, carbon, aramid, or basalt. Rarely, other fibres such as paper, wood, or asbestos have been used. The polymer is usually an epoxy, vinylester, or polyester thermosetting plastic, though phenol formaldehyde resins are still in use.
As of 1 April 2012, the fleet consists of four two-car sets formed as shown below. [2]

The two cars are each fitted with one single-arm pantograph. [2]
Each set has a sticker depicting a different flower on the body side as follows. [1]
A cherry blossom is a flower of several trees of genus Prunus, particularly the Japanese cherry, Prunus serrulata, which is called sakura after the Japanese.
Rhododendron is a genus of 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family (Ericaceae), either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia, although it is also widespread throughout the highlands of the Appalachian Mountains of North America. It is the national flower of Nepal as well as the state flower of West Virginia and Washington. Most species have brightly coloured flowers which bloom from late winter through to early summer.
Cosmos is a genus, with the same common name of cosmos, consisting of flowering plants in the sunflower family.
Passenger accommodation consists of transverse seating arranged 2+1 abreast with seat backs that can be flipped over to face the direction of travel, and longitudinal bench seats at the ends of the cars. [2]
