Nao Yoshioka (born March 2, 1988) is a soul singer and songwriter from Osaka, Japan, now based in New York City.
Yoshioka was born in Osaka, Japan on 2 March 1988. Her father studied painting and eventually became an interior designer. Her mother was an illustrator before becoming a dress designer.
Yoshioka's parents encouraged her and her two older sisters to explore creative pursuits. Yoshioka attended an arts high school and studied painting and sculpture, eventually joining a band as a vocalist. Yoshioka entered a debut recording competition sponsored by a music vocational school and won. She then worked with a vocal trainer and learned more about blues and soul music.
After problems at school and coping with her parents' divorce, Yoshioka struggled to concentrate on her musical ambitions. [1] She eventually dropped out of high school and moved to New York City to pursue a career as a singer. [2]
Yoshioka broke into the soul scene while spending two and a half years in New York City beginning in 2009. In 2011 she reached the Top Dog Round at the Apollo Theater Season Final and the final stage of the McDonald's Gospelfest. [3]
She came to wider notice in 2012 when she was discovered by Naoki Yamanouchi, Sweet Soul Records' CEO, who released her single "Make the Change." Her debut album The Light, released 13 November 2013, [4] included a number of original songs, a duet with Brian Owens on a cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and covers of "At Last," "A Change is Gonna Come," and "His Eye is on the Sparrow." [5] The album was an international effort, recorded in the U.S., the Netherlands, and Japan, with songwriting, arranging, and production collaborations from Owens, Dani Elliott, ORLY, the Netherlands' Shirma Rouse, and Hiroyuki Matsuda.
In May 2014, Yoshioka and Owens debuted at Blue Note Tokyo, and in August of that year she was invited to perform at the Meet the World Beat summer festival hosted by Osaka radio station FM802, which selected Yoshioka's music for "Heavy Rotation" programming whereupon her music was played in heavy rotation for the entire month. On 8 April 2015 her second album, Rising, was released in Japan by Sweet Soul Records and Yamaha Music Communications. [6]
Shortly thereafter, on 17 July 2015, The Light was released in the U.S. and Canada by Purpose Music Group and NIA Distribution. [7] In 2015 she received a SoulTracks Readers' Choice Award as Best New Artist. [8] In the summer of 2016, Yoshioka performed at her first major US music festival, Capital Jazz Fest, alongside artists including Lalah Hathaway and Marcus Miller.
Her third album, The Truth, released in 2016, also included many collaborations. The album's U.S. re-release (4 September 2018) received glowing reviews, noting that she was the first Japanese soul singer to make waves in the birthplace of the music she's devoted her career to. Rolling Stone called the album "impeccable neo-soul." [9] Yoshioka's collaborators on the album included Khari Mateen, Musicman Ty, and Carolyn Malachi. The lead single "I Love When" hit the Top 40 (#32) on the Urban Adult Contemporary Billboard chart. [10] SoulBounce debuted the single "Spark" on 27 August 2018. [11]
In 2018, Yoshioka moved to New York City. Additional recognition in the UK arrived that year too, as in January 2019 she was awarded the 2018 Bright Star Award (UK and international Soul and Reggae) for Best International Artist. [12] Yoshioka performed at the Blue Note in New York in April 2019, a few months before the August 16 release of her fourth album, Undeniable, again on Sweet Soul Records. The single "All In Me" premiered at PopMatters August 9, [13] SoulTracks debuted her video single "Got Me" on July 27, [14] and Earmilk featured the single "Liberation" produced by Eric Roberson. [15] Other bookings in 2019 included San Jose Jazz's Summer Fest. [16]

Kelis Rogers, known mononymously as Kelis, is an American singer-songwriter and chef. She was admitted to New York's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, where she learned to play the saxophone and won a spot in the Girls Choir of Harlem. After she graduated from high school, Kelis took on a variety of jobs before landing a backup vocal slot on an album track called "Fairytalez", released by the American hip hop group Gravediggaz. She then began working with music producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, known as The Neptunes, which ultimately resulted in her being signed to Virgin Records in 1998.

Beni Arashiro is a Japanese R&B singer, who debuted in 2004 under the Avex Trax label. In 2008, Arashiro left Avex Trax and transferred to Universal Music Japan where she started to perform as simply Beni.
Eric Roberson is an American singer, songwriter, former rapper and music producer. He is sometimes referred to simply as Erro, the name which he later used as part of his label Blue Erro Soul. His first single, "Represent", was released through Warner Bros. Records in 1994 and he recorded an album for that label which remains unreleased.
Kelly Melissa Sweet, known professionally as Haliene, is an American singer of electropop and electronic dance music. She is known for her vocal collaborations with EDM artists Armin van Buuren, Seven Lions, ATB, Ferry Corsten, Aly & Fila and her song with Gareth Emery & Standerwick, "Saving Light", which won the A State of Trance award, "Tune of the Year," by Armin van Buuren.
Ikimonogakari (いきものがかり) is a Japanese pop rock duo from Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan consisting of Yoshiki Mizuno and Kiyoe Yoshioka. The group started in February 1999 with Hotaka Yamashita and Yoshiki Mizuno, who had known each other since they were six years old, and was joined by vocalist Kiyoe Yoshioka in November of the same year. The group's name is a reference to ikimono-gakari (いきものがかり), a group of children who are responsible for looking after plants and animals in Japanese elementary schools.
Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo is an American singer and songwriter. Aiko embarked on her music career contributing vocals and appearing in music videos for R&B group B2K. In an effort to promote and cultivate a following for her, she was marketed as B2K member Lil' Fizz's cousin; she is not actually related to him. In 2003, Aiko was set to release her debut album, My Name Is Jhené, through her labels Sony, The Ultimate Group and Epic; however, the album was never released, and Aiko asked to be released from the label in order to continue her education.
Teyana Me Shay Jacqueli Shumpert is an American singer, actress, dancer and choreographer. In 2005, she signed a record deal with Pharrell Williams' Star Trak Entertainment imprint. Afterwards, she choreographed the music video for "Ring the Alarm" by Beyoncé. Taylor would then appear on MTV's My Super Sweet 16, prior to the 2008 release of her debut single "Google Me". Soon after, she landed (uncredited) guest features on the songs "Dark Fantasy" and "Hell of a Life" by Kanye West, from his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010).

She released her debut album, For All We Know, in 2016, her second album, Saturn, in 2018, followed by her most recent album, And Then Life Was Beautiful, released in 2021.
Ella Mai Howell is an English singer and songwriter. Her musical career began at London's British and Irish Modern Music Institute in 2014, during which time she auditioned as part of a trio on the 11th season of The X Factor. In 2015, she uploaded a four-track solo EP of originals to SoundCloud titled Troubled, and was discovered on social media by American record producer Mustard and signed with his record label, 10 Summers Records.

Having been active as a cosplayer and independent musician, she made her major debut in 2018 as the singing voice of the character Elza Kanzaki in the anime series Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online. Her first single under her own name was released in August 2018.
Amanda Ava Koci, known professionally as Ava Max, is an American singer and songwriter. She signed with Atlantic Records in 2016, through which she released her breakthrough single, "Sweet but Psycho", in August 2018. The song peaked at number one in 22 countries, and reached number two and number 10 on the Australian ARIA Charts and US Billboard Hot 100, respectively. In March 2020, Max released the song, "Kings & Queens", which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 19 on the UK Singles Chart. It was followed by the release of her debut studio album, Heaven & Hell, in September 2020, which charted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and at number 27 on the US Billboard 200. In November 2020, the song "My Head & My Heart" was released, which peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. Max released her second studio album, Diamonds & Dancefloors, on January 27, 2023.
