Nao Yoshioka (born March 2, 1988) is a soul singer and songwriter from Osaka, Japan, now based in Tokyo.
Yoshioka was born in Osaka, Japan on 2 March 1988. Her father studied painting and eventually became an interior designer. Her mother was an illustrator before becoming a dress designer.
Yoshioka's parents encouraged her and her two older sisters to explore creative pursuits. Yoshioka attended an arts high school and studied painting and sculpture, eventually joining a band as a vocalist. Yoshioka entered a debut recording competition sponsored by a music vocational school and won. She then worked with a vocal trainer and learned more about blues and soul music.
After problems at school and coping with her parents' divorce, Yoshioka struggled to concentrate on her musical ambitions. [1] She eventually dropped out of high school and moved to New York City to pursue a career as a singer. [2]
Yoshioka broke into the soul scene while spending two and a half years in New York City beginning in 2009. In 2011 she reached the Top Dog Round at the Apollo Theater Season Final and the final stage of the McDonald's Gospelfest.[ citation needed ]
She came to wider notice in 2012 when she was discovered by Naoki Yamanouchi, Sweet Soul Records' CEO, who released her single "Make the Change." Her debut album The Light, released 13 November 2013, [3] included a number of original songs, a duet with Brian Owens on a cover of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and covers of "At Last," "A Change is Gonna Come," and "His Eye is on the Sparrow." [4] The album was an international effort, recorded in the U.S., the Netherlands, and Japan, with songwriting, arranging, and production collaborations from Owens, Dani Elliott, ORLY, the Netherlands' Shirma Rouse, and Hiroyuki Matsuda.
In May 2014, Yoshioka and Owens debuted at Blue Note Tokyo, and in August of that year she was invited to perform at the Meet the World Beat summer festival hosted by Osaka radio station FM802, which selected Yoshioka's music for "Heavy Rotation" programming whereupon her music was played in heavy rotation for the entire month. On 8 April 2015 her second album, Rising, was released in Japan by Sweet Soul Records and Yamaha Music Communications.[ citation needed ]
Shortly thereafter, on 17 July 2015, The Light was released in the U.S. and Canada by Purpose Music Group and NIA Distribution. [5] In 2015 she received a SoulTracks Readers' Choice Award as Best New Artist. [6] In the summer of 2016, Yoshioka performed at her first major US music festival, Capital Jazz Fest, alongside artists including Lalah Hathaway and Marcus Miller.
Her third album, The Truth, released in 2016, also included many collaborations. The album's U.S. re-release (4 September 2018) received glowing reviews, noting that she was the first Japanese soul singer to make waves in the birthplace of the music she's devoted her career to. Rolling Stone called the album "impeccable neo-soul." [7] Yoshioka's collaborators on the album included Khari Mateen, Musicman Ty, and Carolyn Malachi. The lead single "I Love When" hit the Top 40 (#32) on the Urban Adult Contemporary Billboard chart. [8] SoulBounce debuted the single "Spark" on 27 August 2018. [9]
In 2018, Yoshioka moved to New York City. Additional recognition in the UK arrived that year too, as in January 2019 she was awarded the 2018 Bright Star Award (UK and international Soul and Reggae) for Best International Artist. [10] Yoshioka performed at the Blue Note in New York in April 2019, a few months before the August 16 release of her fourth album, Undeniable, again on Sweet Soul Records. The single "All In Me" premiered at PopMatters August 9, [11] SoulTracks debuted her video single "Got Me" on July 27, [12] and Earmilk featured the single "Liberation" produced by Eric Roberson. [13] Other bookings in 2019 included San Jose Jazz's Summer Fest. [14]

Eric Roberson is an American singer, songwriter, former rapper and music producer. He is sometimes referred to simply as Erro, the name which he later used as part of his label Blue Erro Soul. His first single, "Represent", was released through Warner Bros. Records in 1994 and he recorded an album for that label which remains unreleased.

Ikimonogakari (いきものがかり) is a Japanese pop rock duo from Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan consisting of Yoshiki Mizuno and Kiyoe Yoshioka. The group started in February 1999 with Hotaka Yamashita and Yoshiki Mizuno, who had known each other since they were six years old, and was joined by vocalist Kiyoe Yoshioka in November of the same year. The group's name is a reference to ikimono-gakari (いきものがかり), a group of children who are responsible for looking after plants and animals in Japanese elementary schools.
Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo is an American R&B singer-songwriter and rapper from Los Angeles, California. Aiko embarked on her musical career in 2002, as a backing vocalist and music video performer for the R&B group B2K. She was signed by their record label, The Ultimate Group that same year and was marketed as the "cousin" of B2K member Lil' Fizz to cultivate her own following, although they are not related. Her debut album, slated for a 2003 release through the label with Epic Records, was shelved due to Aiko instead further pursuing her education.

Nagi Yanagi, stylized as yanaginagi (やなぎなぎ), is a Japanese singer and songwriter from Osaka Prefecture who is signed to NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan. After becoming interested with music in her childhood, she began singing and writing original songs. In 2006, she began uploading her music to Niconico and other websites, gaining the attention of the J-pop band Supercell, who featured Yanagi as the guest vocalist from 2009 to 2011.
Kiyoe Yoshioka is a Japanese singer and vocalist. She is best known for being the lead vocalist of the band Ikimonogakari since its founding in 1999. She has also been active as a solo singer, releasing her first album Utairo in 2018. In 2022 her song "Dekoboko" was used as the first opening theme to the anime series A Couple of Cuckoos.
Neo Jessica Joshua, better known as Nao, is an English singer-songwriter and record producer from East London. Her sound has been described as soul combined with electronic music, funk and R&B. Nao coined the term "wonky funk" to describe her style. Courtney Shanade Salter, known professionally as Ari Lennox, is an American R&B singer-songwriter from Washington, D.C. She signed with J. Cole's Dreamville Records, an imprint of Interscope Records as the former label's first female artist in 2015. She started gaining recognition after the release of her second extended play (EP) and major label debut, Pho (2016). That same year, she made an uncredited guest appearance on Cole's song "Change". Her debut studio album, Shea Butter Baby (2019), was met with critical praise and lukewarm commercial response.
Passion Like Fire is the seventh studio album by Canadian singer Tamia. It was released on September 7, 2018 through Plus One Music Group and 21 Entertainment. Her first project to be distributed by eOne Music, its release marked twenty years since the release of her solo debut single "Imagination" and its eponymous parent album. A breakaway from her previous album Love Life (2015), the singer worked with a smaller team of collaborators on the album, involving longtime contributors Shep Crawford and Salaam Remi as well as songwriters Lundon Knighten and Jonas Myrin and chief producer Lil' Ronnie and his team.
