Dr. Natalie Azar is an American medical journalist and a clinical associate professor of rheumatology at NYU Langone Medical Center. She is well known for being a medical contributor at NBC News. She appears frequently on Today for medical advice and reports. [1]
Azar was born in 1970 in Maryland but spent her childhood in Pennsylvania with her parents and sister. She was inspired to become a doctor as her father was a prominent psychiatrist in their hometown. She received a BA in Psychobiology from Wellesley College in 1992, graduating magma cum laude and phi beta kappa. She completed her MD in 1996 at Cornell University Medical College in New York City and her fellowship in rheumatology at NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases in 2001. [2]
Prior to her employment with NBC News, Azar was a regular guest on Fox 5 NY as well as The Dr. Oz Show, discussing medical news and was also a contributor on 2 platforms: HealthGuru and Sharecare. Currently, she is working at NYU Langone Health in Manhattan, New York as a clinical associate professor in the department of rheumatology. As a faculty member, in addition to a full time clinical practice, she is involved in teaching the house staff and medical students. She was also previously a member of the NYU school of medicine’s admissions committee and is involved in the admissions for the rheumatology fellowship program. With her extensive knowledge of various medical trends, Dr. Azar is also a writer. [3]
Since 2014, Dr. Natalie has been a medical contributor for NBC News and its affiliated networks and since then, has become one of America's most popular medical contributors to count on for medical advice when she frequently appears on Today. [4] In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in early 2020, her popularity soared as she became the main source of information for millions of Americans nationwide. [5] [6]
Dr. Azar is married to her husband, Michael Hubner, an attorney by profession, whom she met while in medical school. They tied the knot in 2000, have 2 children, and live in New Jersey. [7]
In spring 2016, Azar was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work at NBC News. She was listed as one of the 5 medical journalists listed on "People to watch" in Crain's annual publication.[ citation needed ]
