Eric Arthur Heiden is an American physician and a former long track speed skater, road cyclist and track cyclist. He won an unprecedented five individual gold medals, and set four Olympic records and one world record at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Heiden was the most successful athlete at those Olympic Games, single-handedly winning more gold medals than all nations except for the Soviet Union (10) and East Germany (9). He is the most successful Winter Olympian from a single edition of any Winter Olympics. He delivered the Athlete's Oath at those same 1980 Games. His coach was Dianne Holum.
The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as Sarajevo '84, were a winter multi-sport event held between 8 and 19 February 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. It was the first Winter Olympic Games held in a Slavic language-speaking country, as well as the only Winter Olympics held in a communist country before the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. It was the second consecutive Olympic Games held in a communist country, after the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.
The 1952 Winter Olympics, officially known as the VI Olympic Winter Games, took place in Oslo, Norway, from 14 to 25 February 1952. A total of 694 athletes representing 30 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the Games, taking part in 22 events from 6 sports.
Lidiya Pavlovna Skoblikova is a retired Russian speed skater and coach. She represented the USSR Olympic team during the Olympic Winter Games in 1960, 1964 and 1968, and won a total of six gold medals, a record she shares with Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst. She also won 25 gold medals at the world championships and 15 gold medals at the USSR National Championships in several distances. She was also the first athlete to earn six gold medals in the Winter Olympics and the first to earn four gold medals at a single Olympic Winter Games. She was the most successful athlete at the 1960 and 1964 Winter Olympics, sharing the honour for 1960 Games with her compatriot Yevgeny Grishin.
Anna ("Anni") Christine Friesinger-Postma is a German former speed skater. Her father Georg Friesinger, of Germany, and mother Janina ("Jana") Korowicka, of Poland, were both skaters; Jana was on the Polish team at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Her brother Jan is also a speed skater. Her sister Agnes is a former speed skater. In July 2010, Friesinger retired from her active sports career when she had to be treated for severe cartilage damage in her right knee joint.
Enrico Fabris is an Italian former long track speed skater who has won three World Cup races and became the first European Allround Champion from Italy when he won the 2006 European Championships one month before the Winter Olympics in Turin. In 2007 he won also the silver medal and in 2008 the bronze medal. Fabris is also a six-time Italian Allround Champion.
The women's 3000 m speed skating competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, was held on 12 February, the second day of competition at the Olympics.

Natalya Sergeyevna Donchenko was the first female Soviet speed skater to win an Olympic medal. She had taught herself to skate on an abandoned rink during World War two. She was spotted and asked to join a skating team. She said her most proud moment was to win in 1945 but her Olympic Siver medal in California was her greatest achievement.
Luiza Złotkowska is a Polish speed skater. She is an Olympic silver and bronze medalist, and held the Polish record on the 5000 m distance from February 2021 to December 2022.
Christopher John Nicholson is a New Zealand sportsman who has represented the country at both the Winter Olympics as a short track speed skater and at the Summer Olympics as a cyclist. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, and the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. The only other New Zealander to compete at both the Summer and Winter Olympics is Madonna Harris.
Vladimir Dmitriyevich Komarov was a Russian speed skater. He competed at the 1972 Winter Olympics in the 500 m and finished in 14th place. After retiring from competitions he graduated from an institute of physical education in Moscow Oblast (1979) and worked as a speed skating coach. He was the head coach of the Moscow team in the 1980s. He was the president of the Russian Speed Skating Federation and a member of the national Olympic committee. He married Natalya Petrusyova, a Soviet Olympic speed skater.
Natalya Fyodorovna Polozkova is a retired Russian speed skater. She competed at the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics in the 500, 1000 and 1500 m events with the best achievement of fourth place in the 1500 m in 1992. In 1991 she won a European title in the 500 m as well as a gold medal at the Universiade in the 1500 m event.
Nana Takagi is a Japanese former speed skater who is a member of the Nidec Sankyo speed skating team.
Natalya Sergeevna Voronina is a Russian speed skater. She is a World Champion and a world record holder in the 5000 m event.
Jeanne Marie Omelenchuk was an American speed skater. She competed at the 1960, 1968 and the 1972 Winter Olympics. As a cyclist, she won the 1952 and 1955 amateur women's United States National Championship.
