Natasha Lako (born 13 May 1948) is an Albanian poet and novelist. She belongs to the country's first generation of women writers. [1] [2]

Lako studied political science at Tirana University, specializing in journalism. She has also worked at the New Albania Film Studios in Tirana. [2] Together with Diana Çuli and Helena Kadare, she was one of the few women writers during the Albanian communist regime. From 1991 to 1993, she was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in the coalition government. In 1997, she became the first director of the Albanian Film Archives, working there for a number of years. [3]

Lako, who has also worked as a screenwriter, is married to the Albanian actor and film director Mevlan Shanaj. They have two children, Hera and Joni. [4]

Albanian literature stretches back to the Middle Ages and comprises those literary texts and works written in Albanian. It may also refer to literature written by Albanians in Albania, Kosovo and the Albanian diaspora particularly in Italy. Albanian occupies an independent branch within the Indo-European family and does not have any other closely related language. The origin of Albanian is not entirely known, but it may be a successor of the ancient Illyrian language.

Albanian epic poetry is a form of epic poetry created by the Albanian people. It consists of a longstanding oral tradition still very much alive. A good number of Albanian epic singers can be found today in Kosovo and northern Albania, and some also in Montenegro. The Albanian traditional singing of epic verse from memory is one of the last survivors of its kind in modern Europe, and the last survivor of the Balkan traditions.

Kasëm Trebeshina was an Albanian member of national resistance during World War II part of the National Liberation Movement, an actor, translator, communist prosecutor and writer. He was one of the founders of the notorious communist secret police Sigurimi.

Helena "Elena" Kadare is an Albanian screenwriter, translator and author of short stories and novels. One of the latter, 1970's Një lindje e vështirë, is the first novel by a woman to have been published in Albania. A Woman from Tirana (1990) is the novel of Kadare's that is perhaps her most widely read.

The literature of Kosovo is composed of literary texts written in Albanian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Turkish, specifically by authors of Kosovo. Kosovo produced several prominent writers in the Ottoman era. However, Ottoman authorities banned the written use of the Albanian language until 1912. This policy continued during Serb rule until the outbreak of World War II.

Dalip bey Frashëri, also known with the pen-name Hyxhretiu, was an Albanian Bektashi sheikh and bejtexhi of the 19th century. His poem Kopshti i te mirevet is the first and the longest epic known in the Albanian literature.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Milto Sotir Gurra</span> Albanian writer and journalist (1884–1972)

Milto Sotir Gurra was an Albanian journalist and short story writer of the 20th century. His first works came out during the last period of the Albanian National Awakening and continued for a 50-year period. Although simple in character and at times permeated by naive sentimentality, his work reserves a certain importance in Albanian literature due to its social context and thematics. Gurra also translated to Albanian some of the masterpieces of classic Russian literature.
