Jerry Herman American composer and lyricist

Gerald Sheldon Herman was an American composer and lyricist, known for his work in Broadway musical theater. He composed the scores for the hit Broadway musicals Hello, Dolly!, Mame, and La Cage aux Folles. He was nominated for the Tony Award five times, and won twice, for Hello, Dolly! and La Cage aux Folles.

52nd Academy Awards Award ceremony for films of 1979

The 52nd Academy Awards were presented April 14, 1980, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles. The ceremonies were presided over by Johnny Carson, who, in noting the long duration of the production, joked that President Jimmy Carter was working hard for their "release" from the ceremonies, a clear reference to the Iranian hostage crisis. Among the nominees for Best Supporting Actor were 8 year-old Justin Henry—the youngest Best Supporting Actor nominee ever—and 79-year-old Melvyn Douglas. This was the largest age difference between two competing actors in Oscar history until 2013. Their age difference was partially the reason why Douglas did not attend the Oscars that night, despite winning the award.

Douglas Hodge is an English actor, director, and musician who trained for the stage at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Hodge is a council member of the National Youth Theatre for which, in 1989, he co-wrote Pacha Mama's Blessing about the Amazon rain forests staged at the Almeida Theatre.

La Cage aux folles is a 1978 Franco-Italian comedy film and the first film adaptation of Jean Poiret's 1973 play La Cage aux Folles. It is co-written and directed by Édouard Molinaro and stars Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault.

La Cage aux Folles is a 1973 French farce by Jean Poiret centering on confusion that ensues when Laurent, the son of a Saint Tropez night club owner and his gay lover, brings his fiancée's ultraconservative parents for dinner. The original French production premièred at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on 1 February 1973 and ran for almost 1,800 performances. The principal roles were played by Jean Poiret and Michel Serrault. A French-Italian film of the play was made in 1978 In 1983, Poiret's play was adapted in the United States as a musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and later remade as the American film The Birdcage.

The 14th National Society of Film Critics Awards, given on 3 January 1980, honored the best filmmaking of 1979.

David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actor Former annual Italian film award

The David di Donatello for Best Foreign Actor is a category in the David di Donatello Awards, described as "Italy’s answer to the Oscars". It was awarded by the Accademia del Cinema Italiano to recognize outstanding efforts on the part of non-Italian film actors during the year preceding the ceremony. The award was created during the second edition of the ceremony, in 1957, and cancelled after the 1996 event.
