The National Defense College of Cuba (Spanish : Colegio de Defensa Nacional de Cuba, CODEN) is a military institution of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces located in Havana, and a center of higher education within the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR). [1] It is led by Brigadier General Manuel de Jesús Rey Soberón.

Overview

It was founded on 30 October 1990 and is in charge of Cuban military postgraduate education. [2] Among the functions of the CODEN are to direct and develop the educational process in the specialty of National Security and Defense. Many of its students come from the Nico Lopez Central School of the Cuban Communist Party. At the time of its foundation, it was modeled on the Canadian Forces College in Toronto and offers a curriculum similar to that of the American National Defense University at Fort McNair. It the first of the higher level of the MINFAR to receive its certification status, issued by the National Accreditation Board attached to the Ministry of Higher Education. The CODEN currently manages 15 postgraduate study programs. [3] The faculty of the college includes military officials as well as civilian professors. [4] [5] Among the notable visitors to the college include defense minister Leopoldo Cintra Frías, [6] Chief of the General Staff Álvaro López Miera and Iranian ambassador Kambiz Sheikh Hassani. [7] Nearly five thousand Cuban civilians and soldiers have graduated from the CODEN since its creation. [8]

The ITM Jose Marti in Cuba, which may be translated as Military Technical Institute, is a cadet school of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. It is located in Marianao, Havana and has served as a convent and was also a secondary school. The school was founded on 1 February 1967 by Cuban leader Fidel Castro. It is a recipient of the Antonio Maceo Order and holds the honorific of Cuban national hero José Martí. In 1998, the Cuban Academy of Sciences awarded it the status of Sponsor of Science and Technology.

The Territorial Troops Militia, is a Cuban paramilitary militia composed exclusively of civilian volunteers. It was established on May 1, 1980, and placed under the command of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR). Its creation is recognized as having marked the beginning of Cuba's official embrace of the military doctrine of the War of All the People, which has remained in force since then. Like the MNR of the early 1960s, the MTT's formation reinforced the notion of the popular will to defend the Revolution.

The Day of the Cuban Armed Forces is a national holiday in Cuba celebrated annually on December 2 commemorating the landing of the Granma which brought the Castro brothers and their supporters from Mexico to Cuba to start their revolution against the Batista Regime. The event is marked by military parades, fireworks and concerts throughout the country.

Máximo Gómez Command Academy is a military institution of the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. The academy, which is located to the east of Havana, is the principal senior service school for the training of soldiers in the FAR. It currently bears the name of Major General Máximo Gómez, who was a 19th century Cuban independence fighter. It was founded in 1963 and is under the orbit of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR), whose employees are trained by the school. The command academy has been decorated with many military and state awards such as the Order of Antonio Maceo and the Order of Carlos J. Finlay.

The Camilo Cienfuegos Military Schools System are a type of boarding school in the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces. Founded 1966, it has 20 campuses in many cities, and is an official military high school. They provide pre-military training to students aged 11 to 17. They forge of more than 70% of officers and 50% of the generals and colonels in the FAR. It is named after Camilo Cienfuegos, a Cuban revolutionary who, along with Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Juan Almeida Bosque, and Raúl Castro, took part in the 1956 Granma expedition. Unlike the Russian Suvorov Military Schools, they are co-educational, modeled on United States military high schools and preparatory pre-college institutes.
