The National Highway System of Nepal is the group of main roads in Nepal. Any highway or road that connects east to west and north to south is considered a National Highway of Nepal. [1]
National Highways are administered by the Department of Roads under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (Nepal).
According to the Statistics of National Highway SNH-2020/21 there are 80 National Highways in Nepal, with a total length of 11178.92 km. [2]
The new report of the Road Department of Nepal "Statistics of National Highway SNH-2022/23" shows that a total of 621 km (385.87 mi) of new roads have been built in Nepal in a span of 1 year, thus the total length of National Highway in Nepal in the year 2023 has become 11,799.09 km (7,331.61 mi) [3]

Nepal is a landlocked country where transportation is difficult due to the mountainous terrain. Modern transportation in Nepal has only started in the 20th century.
Roads in India are an important mode of transport in India. India has a network of over 6,331,791 kilometres (3,934,393 mi) of roads. It is the second-largest road network in the world, after the United States. At of roads per square kilometre of land, the quantitative density of India's road network is equal to that of Hong Kong, and substantially higher than the United States, China, Brazil and Russia. Adjusted for its large population, India has approximately 5.13 kilometres (3.19 mi) of roads per 1,000 people, which is much lower than United States 20.5 kilometres (12.7 mi) but higher than that of China 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi). India's road network carries over 71% of its freight and about 85% of passenger traffic.
Mahendra Highway or NH01, also called East-West Highway, runs across the Terai geographical region of Nepal, from Mechinagar in the east to Bhim Datta in the west, cutting across the entire width of the country. It is the longest highway in Nepal and was constructed in cooperation with various countries. The highway is named after King Mahendra Shah.
Pushpalal Highway (NH03) (Nepali: पुष्पलाल लोकमार्ग, Puṣpalāl Lōkamār is an ongoing road project in Nepal, which is thought to be 1,776 kilometres long. After completion, it will be the longest national highway of Nepal. Nepal has three geographical regions from east to west, plain land or Terai in south, higher mountains or Himalayas in north and hills in middle region. The highway runs through the mid-hills region only. It starts from easternmost hill at Chiyo Bhanjyang of Panchthar District and ends at westernmost hill at Jhulaghat of Baitadi District in far west.
NH04 or Birtamod-Bhadrapur road is a short National Highway of Nepal, located in Jhapa District of Koshi Province. The total length of the highway is just 12.53 kilometres (7.79 mi). The road is fully black topped four lane National Highway.
NH10 or Deurali-Mudhe-Bohoratar Highway is a National Highway of Nepal located in Koshi Province. The whole section of the highway is in Sankhuwasabha District. The total length of the highway is 92 kilometres (57 mi). The road section starts from Deurali and runs via Mudhe Sanishchare, Chainpur and finalizes merging with NH08 at Bohoratar.
NH11 or Phikkal-Chabbise road is a short National Highway of Nepal located in Koshi Province. The total length of the highway is just 19 kilometres (12 mi) and the whole section is located in Ilam District. It starts from Phikkal Bazar and runs via Chhiruwa, Mechi Bazar and finalizes at Chabbise which is an Indo-Nepal border located at the elevation of 1948 m. The road is connected with Indian State Highway SH12 (WB) at the other side of the border. NH11 is connected with NH02 at Phikkal Bazar.
Siddhicharan Highway (NH20) is a National Highway of Nepal located between Madhesh Province and Koshi Province. The total length of the highway is 193 kilometres (120 mi) which passes through Siraha District of Madhesh Province and Udayapur District, Okhaldhunga District, Solukhumbu District of Koshi Province. It starts in Terai region at Madar and crosses NH01 in Mirchaiya Municipality and runs towards north where it passes through Sivalik Hills and enters in Inner Terai valley in Katari Municipality, at there it crosses NH09 then it moves further north climbing Mahabharat Range or Lesser Himalayas where it crosses NH03 (Mid-Hills Highway and enters hilly town Okhaldhunga of Siddhicharan Municipality. It crosses NH75 at Okhaldhunga and runs further North towards Salleri. The distance between Okhaldhunga to Salleri is 57.7 kilometres.
National Highway 50, NH50 (Maryadpur–Taulihawa–Jitpur) is a national highway in Nepal. The highway is located in Kapilvastu District in Lumbini Province. The total length of the highway is 33.05 kilometres (20.54 mi). It was a Feeder Road F010 which upgrade to NH50.
National Highway 51, NH51 is a national highway in Nepal. The highway is located in Kapilvastu District and Arghakhanchi District in Lumbini Province. The total length of the highway is 83.13 kilometres (51.65 mi). The 25.01 kilometres (15.54 mi) of road length is covered by Kapilvastu district and the remaining 58.12 kilometres (36.11 mi) of road is covered by Arghakhanchi District. It was a Feeder Road F011 which upgrade to NH51.
National Highway 52, NH52 is a national highway in Nepal located between Lumbini and Gandaki provinces of Nepal. The total length of the highway is 215.54 kilometres (133.93 mi). This new route has been given the form of a highway by connecting several feeder roads.
Sahid Highway is a national highway in Nepal located in Lumbini Province. The total length of the highway is 223.91 kilometres (139.13 mi). Feeder road F138, F015 and F179 were converted and upgraded into NH54.
Rara Highway is a proposed national highway in Nepal which is being conducted in Karnali Province. The total length of the highway is proposed to be 223.91 kilometres (139.13 mi). According to SNH2020-21 110.02 kilometres (68.36 mi) of track has been opened in four districts; Salyan District, West Rukum, Jumla District and Mugu District (27.11 km.
National Highway 59, NH59 is a proposed national highway in Nepal which is being constructed in Karnali Province. The total length of the highway is supposed to be 187.91 kilometres (116.76 mi). According to SNH2020-21 53.74 kilometres (33.39 mi) of the road has already been opened and 33.74 km (20.97 mi) of the road has been paved.
National Highway 61, NH61 is a proposed national highway in Nepal which is being conducted in Karnali Province. The total length of the highway is supposed to be 164.62 kilometres (102.29 mi). According to SNH2020-21 115 kilometres (71 mi) of the road has already been opened and 100 km (62.14 mi) of the road has been paved.
National Highway 62, NH62 is a proposed national highway in Nepal which is being constructed in Sudurpashchim Province. The total length of the highway is supposed to be 240.98 kilometres (149.74 mi). According to SNH2020-21 70.98 kilometres (44.10 mi) of the road has already been opened and 54.47 km (33.85 mi) of the road has been paved.
National Highway 67 (NH67) is a proposed national highway in Nepal located in Sudurpashchim Province. The total length of the highway is 198.14 kilometres (123.12 mi) in which 25.79 km (16.03 mi) of the track has been opened. The road from Brahmadev to Dattu is marked as National Highway 67.
National Highway 71 (NH71) is a proposed national highway in Nepal located in Lumbini Province. The total length of the highway is 160.69 kilometres (99.85 mi)
