Nawal Meniker (born 9 December 1997) is a French track and field athlete who competes in the high jump. [1]
She won the silver medal at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing in 2014, behind Yuliya Levchenko. [2] She won the silver medal behind Morgan Lake in Eskilstuna at the 2015 European Athletics Junior Championships. [3]
She began to be coached by Mickaël Hanany, based in El Paso, Texas in 2022. Meniker cleared a personal best indoors height of 1.92m in Aubiére, in February 2023. She then cleared a height of 1.93 outdoors in Tucson, Arizona in April 2023. [4] [5]
She won high jump in Division I at the 2023 European Athletics Team Championships in Silesia in June 2023 with a clearance of 1.92 metres. [6]
Making her World Championship debut in August 2023, she qualified for the high jump final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest with a jump of 1.89 metres. [7] [8]

She is a two-time world champion and double Olympic medallist who ranks as the joint third- highest female jumper of all time with her personal best of 2.08 m. She is the Croatian record holder in the event, and a former indoor world champion.

The men's high jump event at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union, had an entry list of 30 competitors from 19 nations. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The final was held on Friday 1 August 1980. The event was won by Gerd Wessig of East Germany, the first gold medal by a German athlete in the men's high jump. It was also the first time a world record in the high jump had been set at the Olympics. Jörg Freimuth took bronze, making East Germany the third nation to have two medalists in the event in the same Games. Defending champion Jacek Wszoła of Poland took silver, becoming the fourth man to win two high jump medals and matching Valeriy Brumel for best results at one gold and one silver. Through the 2016 Games, Wszoła, Brumel, and Javier Sotomayor remain the most successful Olympic men's high jumpers; no high jumper has won two gold medals, or one gold and two silvers. Due at least in part to the American-led boycott, the United States' streak of making the podium in every Olympic men's high jump event to date ended.
