The Nazareth Barons were a minor league baseball team based in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. From 1946 to 1950, Nazareth teams played exclusively as members of the Class D level North Atlantic League, qualifying for the 1946 playoffs and finishing in last place in both of their final two seasons. Nazareth was a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Tigers in 1947. Nazateth hosted home minor league home games at Nazareth Borough Park.
Minor league baseball began in Nazareth in 1907, when the Nazareth team played the season as members of the independent Blue Mountain League. [1] A printed postcard of the 1907 Nazareth team identified them as the "pennant winners" of the Blue Mountain League. [2] [3]
Minor league baseball returned in 1947, when the Nazareth "Cement Dusters" became charter members of the eight-team Class D level North Atlantic League. The Bloomingdale Troopers, Carbondale Pioneers, Mahanoy City Bluebirds, Newburgh Hummingbirds, Nyack Rockies, Peekskill Highlanders and Stroudsburg Poconos joined Nazareth in beginning league play on May 8, 1946. The Nazareth Cement Dusters qualified for the 1946 playoffs in their first season of play in the North Atlantic League. The Cement Dusters ended the 1946 season with a 78–40 record, placing second in the standings, playing under manager Stan Benjamin. Nazareth finished 6.0 games behind the first place Peekskill Highlanders. In the first round of the playoffs, the Carbondale Pioneers defeated the Nazareth four games to one. It would be the only playoff appearance for Nazareth. [8] [9] [5] [10] [7]
In 1947, Nazareth played as a minor league affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and adopted the "Tigers" nickname for the season. [11] John Mueller served as manager as the Tigers placed fifth in the regular season with a record of 64–66, finishing 17.5 games behind the first place Kingston Dodgers in the regular season standings and missing the league playoffs. Nazareth continued North Atlantic League play in 1948, becoming known as the "Nazareth Barons." [15] Ending the 1948 season with a record of 52–72, the Barons placed sixth in the regular season standings, finishing 27.5 games behind the 1st place Peekskill Highlanders. Playing under player/Manager Bill Burich, Nazareth did qualify for the four-team playoffs. [16] [17] [5] [18] [7]
Local newspapers nicknamed the 1948 team "Burich's Barons." [19]
The 1949 Nazareth finished last in the eight-team North Atlantic League, their first of two consecutive last place finishes in the league standings. [20] Placing eighth with a record of 52–86, the Barons were managed by Dick Errickson and Charles Heath. Nazareth finished 49.5 games behind the first place 101-35 Stroudsburg Poconos and did not qualify for the four–team playoffs. [21] [22] [5] [23] [7]
In their final season of play, the Nazareth Barons again finished last in the North Atlantic League Standings. The Barons placed eighth and did not qualify for the playoffs. [24] Nazareth ended the 1950 season with a record of 35–90, finishing 48.0 games behind the first place Lebanon Chix, playing under manager Irvin Fortune in their final season. The North Atlantic League permanently folded after the conclusion of the 1950 season. [7] Nazareth has not hosted another minor league team. [29] [7]
The Nazareth teams played home North Atlantic League minor league games at Nazareth Borough Park. [30] The park was constructed beginning in 1935 as a Works Progress Administration project. [31] Still in use today as a public park with a ballfield, "Nazareth Borough Park" is located on North Broad Street. [32]

The North Atlantic League was the name of two minor baseball leagues. The first was a Class D affiliated system that operated from 1946 until 1950, and the second was an independent minor league that played from 1995 until 1996. Three of that league's franchises joined the Northeast League after the folding of the North Atlantic League.
The Springfield Browns was a primary moniker of the minor league baseball teams based in Springfield, Illinois between 1931 and 1950. Springfield teams played as members of the Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League (1931–1932), Mississippi Valley League (1933), Central League (1934), Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League and Mississippi-Ohio Valley League (1950), winning the 1939 league championship. Hosting home games at Reservoir Park, Lanphier Park and Jim Fitzpatrick Memorial Stadium, Springfield teams were an affiliate of the 1931 St. Louis Browns, St. Louis Cardinals (1933–1934), 1935 Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Browns.
The Midland Indians were a minor league baseball team based in Midland, Texas. Between 1937 and 1959, Midland teams played as members of West Texas-New Mexico League (1937–1940), Longhorn League (1947–1955), Southwestern League (1956–1957) and Sophomore League (1958–1959), while hosting minor league games at City Park and then Christensen Stadium. Midland teams played as a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals (1937–1938), Milwaukee Braves (1958–1959) and Washington Senators (1957).
The Vernon Dusters were a minor league baseball team based in Vernon, Texas. From 1947 to 1952, the Dusters played exclusively as members of the Longhorn League, qualifying for the playoffs on three occasions. Hosting home games at Wilbarger Memorial Stadium, the Dusters were the only minor league based in Vernon, Texas.
The Statesville Owls were a minor league baseball team located in Statesville, North Carolina. Statesville minor league teams played a member of the North Carolina Association (1900), Tar Heel League (1939–1940), North Carolina State League,, Tar Heel League (1953), Western Carolina League (1960–1962) and Western Carolinas League, winning three league championships.
The Ada Herefords was a minor league baseball team based in Ada, Oklahoma. From 1947 to 1954, the Herefords played exclusively as a member of the Class D level Sooner State League, winning the league pennant in 1950. The Herefords were a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Browns from 1947 to 1953 and remained an affiliate when St. Louis relocated to become the Baltimore Orioles in 1954. The Chickasha Chiefs were a minor league baseball team based in Chickasha, Oklahoma. The Chiefs played as members of the Class D level Sooner State League from 1948 to 1952, qualifying for the league playoffs on four occasions. The Chiefs teams hosted minor league home games at Borden Park.
The Greenville Greenies was the primary moniker of the minor league baseball teams based in Greenville, North Carolina between 1928 and 1951. Greenville teams played as members of the Eastern Carolina League from 1928 to 1929 and Coastal Plain League from 1934 to 1941 and 1946 to 1951.
The Rome Colonels was the primary moniker of minor league baseball teams based in Rome, New York between 1898 and 1951. Rome teams played as members of the New York State League (1898–1901), Empire State League (1905) and Canadian–American League. The Colonels were preceded in Rome by the Rome Romans.
The Mahanoy City Brewers was the final and primary moniker of the minor league baseball teams based in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania between 1887 and 1950. Mahanoy City teams played as members of the Central Pennsylvania League (1887–1888), Anthracite League (1924) and North Atlantic League (1946–1950). Mahanoy City was an affiliate of the Boston Braves in 1946.
The Peekskill Highlanders were a minor league baseball team based in Peekskill, New York. Early "Peekskill" teams played as members of the Class C level Hudson River League before the Highlanders were members of the Class D level North Atlantic League from 1946 to 1949. The Peekskill Highlanders hosted home games at Peekskill Stadium and were a minor league affiliate of the New York Giants in 1946 and 1947 and St. Louis Browns in 1948.
The Carbondale Pioneers were a minor league baseball team based in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. Between 1895 and 1950, Carbondale teams played as members of the Pennsylvania State League in 1895 and 1896 and North Atlantic League from 1946 to 1950. The Carbondale Pioneers were a minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1947 to 1950, winning league championships in 1947 and 1948. The Pioneers hosted minor league home games at Russell Park.
The Nyack Rocklands were a minor league baseball team based in Nyack, New York. The Rocklands were unofficially nicknamed the "Rockies" and played as members of the Class D level North Atlantic League from 1946 to 1948. The 1947 Nyack Rocklands were a minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Athletics. Nyack hosted home minor league games at the Nyack High School ballpark.
The Bangor Bangors were a minor league baseball team based in Bangor, Pennsylvania. Bangor teams played as members of the 1907 Blue Mountain League and the Class D level North Atlantic League in 1949 and 1950, hosting home games at Bangor Stadium. The team played a partial season in 1949 known as the "Pickers."
The Lansdale Dukes were a minor league baseball team based in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. The Dukes played as members of the 1948 Class D level North Atlantic League, finishing last in their only season of minor league play. Lansdale finished the season with a 28–101 record, hosting home games at Weaver Field.
The Radford Rockets were a minor league baseball team based in Radford, Virginia. From 1946 to 1950, the Radford Rockets played exclusively as members of the Class D level Blue Ridge League, qualifying for the playoffs on three occasions. The Rockets hosted home minor league games at the Redford High School Park.
The Galax Leafs were a minor league baseball team based in Galax, Virginia. From 1946 to 1950, the Galax Leafs played exclusively as members of the Class D level Blue Ridge League, winning the 1947 championship and 1948 pennant. The Galax Leafs were a minor league affiliate of the New York Giants in 1950. The Leafs hosted minor league home games at Felts Park.
The Smithfield–Selma Leafs were a minor league baseball team based in Smithfield, North Carolina, in partnership with Selma, North Carolina. From 1946 to 1950, the Smithfield–Selma Leafs teams played exclusively as members of the Class D level Tobacco State League and hosted home games Legion Park in Smithfield.
The New Bern Bears were a minor league baseball team based in New Bern, North Carolina. Between 1937 and 1952, with a break during World War II, the Bears teams played exclusively as members of the Coastal Plain League, winning three league championships with six playoff appearances. New Bern hosted minor league home games at Kafer Park.
The Lebanon Chix were a minor league baseball team based in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. In 1949 and 1950, the Chix played as members of the North Atlantic League and were a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. After qualifying for the 1949 playoffs, Lebanon won the 1950 North Atlantic League championship in the final season of play for the league. Lebanon hosted home games at Grimes Stadium, built by the owners of the Chix.
