Necdet Özel (born 1950) is a Turkish general,who served as the 28th Chief of the General Staff [1] of the Turkish Armed Forces. He also served as the commander of the Turkish Land Forces. Özel is only the second in this position not to have NATO experience. [2]
Özel was born in 1950 in Ankara. He graduated from the Turkish Military Academy in 1969 and the Infantry School in 1970. In 1975 he attended the London School of Economics for post graduates studies in International Diplomacy.
Özel served as a platoon leader and company commander in various units of the Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC) until 1978. Following his graduation from Army War College in 1980 as a staff officer,he respectively served as operations plan officer at Turkish Peace Forces HQ in Cyprus,branch chief and then as the secretary general at the General Secretariat of Turkish Land Forces,chief of staff at the Turkish Military Academy,and as the commander of the 17th Infantry Regiment.
Having promoted to brigadier general in 1995,he served as the commander of the 172nd Armored Brigade and as the Chief of Internal Security Operations Department,TLFC.
After his promotion to major general in 1999,he assumed the command of the 39th Mechanized Infantry Division and of the Army War College.
In 2003,he was promoted to lieutenant general and served as the commander of the 7th Corps and then as the deputy commander of Training and Doctrine Command,TLFC.
As a general,he served as the commander of Aegean Army between 2007–2008,as the commander of the 2nd Army between 2008–2010,and as the commander of gendarmerie between 2010–2011. After serving as the commander of TLFC and as the acting commander of the Turkish Armed Forces between 29 July and 4 August 2011,he assumed the command of Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) on 4 August 2011. Between 4 August 2011 and 18 August 2015,he served as the 28th chief of the Turkish General Staff,succeeded by Hulusi Akar. [3]
Özel is married to Kamuran Özel. They have one child.
General Hilmi Özkök is a Turkish general who served as the 24th Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces. He took up that post on August 28,2002,and served until August 30,2006,when he retired and was succeeded by General Yaşar Büyükanıt.

The Turkish Land Forces is the main branch of the Turkish Armed Forces responsible for land-based military operations. The army was formed on November 8,1920,after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Significant campaigns since the foundation of the army include suppression of rebellions in Southeast Anatolia and East Anatolia from the 1920s to the present day,combat in the Korean War,the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the current Turkish involvement in the Syrian civil war,as well as its NATO alliance against the USSR during the Cold War. The army holds the preeminent place within the armed forces. It is customary for the Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces to have been the Commander of the Turkish Land Forces prior to his appointment as Turkey's senior ranking officer.
The Second Army of the Turkish Army has headquarters in Malatya. It protects Anatolia and it patrols the border with Syria,Iraq and Iran. Modern Turkish corps are referred to in TGS literature in Ottoman Turkish (1st) numerals. It is not clear when the change occurred. An arbitrary date of 1945 has been chosen as the point at which to start referring to corps in Ottoman Turkish numerals.

Hüseyin Kıvrıkoğlu is a retired Turkish general who was the 23rd commander of the Turkish Armed Forces and on August 30,1998,became Chief of the Turkish General Staff for a four-year term.
Mehmet İlker Başbuğ is a Turkish former general who served as the 26th Chief of the General Staff of Turkey. He was charged with contravention of Articles 309,310,and 311 of the Turkish Penal Code. In August 2013,he was convicted on charges of "establishing and leading a terrorist organization" and "attempting to destroy the Turkish government or attempting to partially or completely prevent its functioning" and sentenced to life imprisonment as part of the Ergenekon trials. However,the Constitutional Court of Turkey determined that Başbuğ's legal rights were violated and overturned his conviction;he was released on 7 March 2014.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces is the chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces. He is appointed by the President of Turkey,who is the commander-in-chief. The position dates to the period of the Government of the Grand National Assembly and the Turkish War of Independence. The post has its own rank insignia,which is the OF-9 rank of the Chief of Staff's personal service branch surrounded by laurel wreaths. In practice,the position has always been held by a Turkish Land Forces officer.

The October 2011 Çukurca attacks are the PKK's attacks targeting Turkish Armed Forces units in Hakkâri's Çukurca district on October 19,2011. After midnight,200 PKK members opened fire on police and gendarmerie buildings and security points in the district center with heavy weapons,resulting in 24 Turkish soldiers killed and 18 wounded. Between 21 and 23 PKK militants were killed in the conflict,and around 250-270 PKK militants were killed in the post-conflict operations,and 210 were injured.

Hulusi Akar is a retired four-star Turkish Armed Forces general who served as the Minister of National Defense from 2018 to 2023. He previously served as the 29th chief of the Turkish General Staff. Akar also served as a brigade commander in various NATO engagements including the International Security Assistance Force against the Taliban insurgency,Operation Deliberate Force during the Bosnian War,the Kosovo Force during the Kosovo War,as well as overseeing much of the Turkish involvement in the Syrian Civil War.

Mehmet Nuri Yamut Pasha was a Turkish general,who became the 20th Commander of the Turkish Armed Forces on 5 June 1950. He was a career Artillery officer. In 1943 he was appointed to the 2nd Corps Command in Gallipoli. During the 2nd Corps Command,he sold his house for the Turkish soldiers who were killed in the Battle of Gallipoli,and built a monumental grave. He served as Chief of General Staff between 1950 and 1954 for a four-year period. It is the first commander-in-chief of the Turkish Land Forces Command since the transition from the Ottoman army to the modern-regular army. He then retired and entered the Parliament from the Justice Party. TBMM X. and XI. He is a deputy in Istanbul.
Yaşar Güler is a Turkish general who currently serves as the Minister of National Defense. He previously served as the 30th Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces from 2018 to 2023.
Musa Avsever is a retired Turkish Army general who was the 52nd commander of the Turkish Land Forces. Prior to his appointment as a commander of the Land Forces on 5 August 2021,he served as the 57th commander of the First Army of Turkey from 2016 to 2021. Due to the appointment of General Yaşar Güler as the Minister of National Defense by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on June 5,2023,General Musa Avsever,the Commander of the Army,has been temporarily assigned as the Chief of the General Staff. On August 3,2023,he was superannuated due to his late age
