Necronautical are an English black metal band from North-West England, consisting of Naut (Russell Dobson,lead vocals, guitar), Carcarrion (guitar, backing vocals), Anchorite (bass, backing vocals, clean vocals), and Slugh (drums). Necronautical have been described as possessing a "distinctive amalgam of extreme, melodic, aggressive sounds and exploratory concepts." [1]

History and approach

Necronautical were formed in the North-West of England by the three original members - Naut (Russ Dobson), Carcarrion (James Goodwin), and Anchorite (Matt McGing). Naut and Anchorite met in high-school, and Carcarrion met the other two at sixth-form college. The three have been playing in the band together since 2010. [2]

Necronautical's style draws heavily upon the themes of death, history, philosophy and mythology. The band draws influence from the exploration of death, a theme from which they derive their name [3] and visualises different landscapes through their music. In the early years, the band was experimental, with Naut explaining "when we started we were trying to integrate other styles and riffs as well, some thrash, death, Viking, or folky kind of stuff but I think the black metal style was always dominant with us." [2]

Musically, Naut and Carcarrion typically take the lead on writing the band's music, with Anchorite providing lyrics and concepts. Explaining the band's creative process in an interview with RocknReel Reviews in June 2016, Anchorite shed light on the band's creative processes: "The music is mostly written by Naut and Carcarrion, they have writing sessions together where they share riffs and add to each other’s ideas and start to craft the bones of a song. Once we have a few ideas we get together and figure out what works in terms of arrangement and revision based on the emerging feel of the song, it’s always the feel that is most central and influences the lyrics and vocals." Additionally, the band typically plays a heavy role in the production of their own music, and have recorded and mixed both of their albums themselves, drawing upon Ritual Sound's Samuel Turbitt for assistance with the finishing touches of The Endurance at Night. [2] The band's third album was recorded by the Naut, excluding the drums which were recorded by Chris Fielding at Skyhammer Studio, who also mixed and mastered the album in December 2018. [5]

After releasing their first work unsigned, Necronautical were signed up by the resurrected Cacophonous Records label in 2016. [6] The three founding members were joined by drummer Slugh (Rob Harris) for their sophomore album in 2016.

Following from the release of The Endurance at Night (2016), the band made their live debut opening for Dark Funeral at the Camden Underworld [3] and would go on to tour extensively around the UK and Europe. Necronautical joined Winterfylleth on their 10 date anniversary tour in 2017, [7] as well as appearing at Inferno Metal Festival in 2018. [8]

Necronautical signed with Candlelight Records in 2019, and released their third album Apotheosis on 30 August 2019. [3] The album was mixed and mastered by producer Chris Feilding, and featured cover artwork by David Thiérrée. [9]

The album's music and lyrical content was in part inspired by the writings and philosophies of Friedrich Nietzsche and Chuck Palahniuk. [9]

The release was preceded by the single "Nihil Sub Sole Novum", released on 13 June 2019, and was accompanied by a music video. The band said of the single: “We feel that this song acts as a perfect microcosm for the direction of the album and of Necronautical itself.” [3]

The album's title track was released the day before the album [10] and received high critical praise, with one critic from Distorted Sound Magazine stating "The album’s fourth, titular track has a vast and expansive sound that it’s hard not to get drawn in by straight away." [11] and another review from Bring The Noise adding "The record’s title track takes the trophy for one of the best ‘classic’ black metal tracks of the year thus far." [12]

Reception

Their second album The Endurance at Night received a number of rave reviews from European black metal websites and publications. DGR at nocleansinging.com said "I had figured, given the band’s previous mark of quality, that Endurance At Night would be a good album, but what I did not expect was that Necronautical would excel on every front." [13] German website Metal1.info gave the album 8.5 out of 10, praising the tone of the album. [14]

Their third album Apotheosis received a positive reception from various webzines and magazines from around the world. Carl Fisher at gbhbl.com described the album as "A savage style of black metal" adding "Necronautical are a beastly bunch with the power and poise to drop anyone and everyone to their knees. Apotheosis is a beastly listen but not in a raw, unlistenable state. Instead it’s an album that has all the black metal trimmings with plenty of ferocity but wrapped up in a more modern and discernible way." [15] and Jordan McEvoy at Bring The Noise UK described the album as being "Drenched in atmosphere and savage classic black metal" concluding "Necronautical triumphantly return to the fray with Apotheosis. While it could have been shorter in places, it is an excellent showcase of the blend between classic and modern black metal. As they continue to refine and improve their sound, they are making themselves to be one of the rising stars in modern black metal today." [12]

Manowar American heavy metal band from New York

Manowar is an American heavy metal band from Auburn, New York. Formed in 1980, the group is known for lyrics based on fantasy and mythology, as well as numerous songs celebrating the genre and its core audience. The band is also known for a loud and emphatic sound. In an interview for MTV in February 2007, bassist Joey DeMaio lamented that "these days, there's a real lack of big, epic metal that is drenched with crushing guitars and choirs and orchestras... so it's nice to be one of the few bands that's actually doing that". In 1984, the band was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for delivering the loudest performance, a record which they have since broken on two occasions. They also hold the world record for the longest heavy metal concert after playing for five hours and 1 minute in Bulgaria in 2008. They also have been known for their slogan "Death to false metal". The band maintains a strong cult following.

Sodom (band) German thrash metal band

Sodom is a German thrash metal band from Gelsenkirchen, formed in 1981. They have gone through many lineup changes, leaving bassist/vocalist Tom Angelripper as the only constant member. The band is currently composed of Angelripper, guitarists Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Along with Kreator, Destruction and Tankard, Sodom has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal. While three of those bands created a sound that would influence the death metal and black metal genres, Sodom's early music style would greatly influence many late 1980s and early 1990s black metal bands more than others.

Katatonia Swedish metal band

Katatonia are a Swedish heavy metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band started as a studio-only project for the duo, as an outlet for the band's love of death metal. Increasing popularity led them to add more band members for live performances, though outside of the band's founders, the lineup was a constantly changing, revolving door of musicians throughout the 1990s, notably including Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth for a period. After two death/doom albums, Dance of December Souls (1993) and Brave Murder Day (1996), problems with Renkse's vocal cords coupled with new musical influences led the band away from the screamed vocals of death metal to a more traditional, melodic form of heavy metal music.

Symphonic metal is a cross-generic style designation for the symphonic subsets of heavy metal music subgenres. It is used to denote any metal band that makes use of symphonic or orchestral elements. The style features the heavy drums and guitars of metal with different elements of orchestral classical music, such as symphonic instruments, choirs and sometimes a full orchestra, or just keyboard orchestration.

Creeper (band) English rock band

Creeper is an English rock band from Southampton. Formed in 2014, the group originally featured vocalist Will Gould, guitarists Ian Miles and Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott, and drummer Dan Bratton. The band independently released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, before signing with Roadrunner Records and issuing follow-up The Callous Heart the next year. At the end of 2015, Nemati was replaced by Oliver Burdett and touring keyboardist/second vocalist Hannah Greenwood became an official band member. A third EP, The Stranger, was released in 2016 and reached the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart top ten.

Supernaut (Australian band)

Supernaut were an Australian glam rock band from Perth. Formed as a pub-rock group, Moby Dick, by British-born brothers Chris Burnham on guitar and Joe Burnham on drums, they were joined late in 1974 by fellow immigrant Gary Twinn on lead vocals. After Randall Murphy joined on bass guitar, they changed their name. The group's debut single, "I Like It Both Ways", was produced by Molly Meldrum and was heavily promoted on his TV pop music show, Countdown. It peaked at No. 16 on the Kent Music Report singles chart. Their self-titled debut album reached No. 13 on the related Kent Music Report albums chart in November of that year. Murphy had left in June 1976 and was permanently replaced on bass guitar by Philip Foxman in August. The album provided another single, "Too Hot to Touch", which appeared at No. 14. In April 1979, the group shortened their name to the Nauts, returned to a heavier pub-rock sound and released a second album of that name in December 1979. They disbanded by March of the following year, with reformations occurring in 2007 and 2016.

Melodic metalcore is a fusion genre, incorporating elements of melodic death metal and metalcore; it has a heavy emphasis on melodic instrumentation, distorted guitar tones, palm muting, double bass drumming, blast beats, metalcore-stylized breakdowns, aggressive screaming, death growls, and clean singing. The genre has seen commercial success for employing a more accessible sound at times compared to other forms of extreme music. Many notable melodic metalcore bands have been influenced by At the Gates and In Flames.

Fleshgod Apocalypse is an Italian symphonic death metal band. Formed in 2007, the group resides in Perugia and are currently signed to Nuclear Blast. They have released five full-length albums.

Of Mice & Men (band) American rock band

Of Mice & Men is an American rock band formed in Costa Mesa, California, in 2009. The band's line-up currently consists of drummer Valentino Arteaga, guitarists Phil Manansala and Alan Ashby, and bassist and lead vocalist Aaron Pauley. The group was founded by former lead vocalist Austin Carlile and former bassist Jaxin Hall in mid-2009 after Carlile's departure from Attack Attack!. Carlile departed from the band in December 2016 citing that a long-term health condition prompted his exit. After Carlile's departure, the band continued to pursue creating music with Pauley as the band's bassist and lead vocalist.

Elder is a four-piece rock band from Massachusetts, consisting of frontman Nick DiSalvo, bassist Jack Donovan, guitarist/keyboardist Michael Risberg and drummer Georg Edert. They have released five full-length albums since 2006 and multiple demos and EPs.
