Neil Gerard Giuliano (born October 26,1956) is an American politician who served as mayor of Tempe,Arizona for four terms,from 1994 to 2004 (Three two-year terms and one four-year term). After serving in elected office he served as president of the Gay &Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) from 2005 to 2009,and served as President/CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation from December 2010 to December 2015. [2] [3] Giuliano was the first directly-elected openly gay mayor in the United States,and Tempe was the largest city in America with an openly gay mayor for nearly six years,1996- 2001.
Since January 2016 he has served as President/CEO of Greater Phoenix Leadership.[ citation needed ]
Giuliano attended Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield,New Jersey. While a student,he was a member of Key Club at Bloomfield High School. [4]
Giuliano graduated with a BA degree from what is now the Hugh Downs School of Communication at Arizona State University in 1979,and received a master's degree in Higher Education Administration in 1983. [2] While a student,he served as student body president (1982–83) as well as the 1977–78 International President of Circle K International. [5] He worked professionally at ASU from 1981 to 2005 in numerous student affairs and university relations roles. He also taught a 3-credit hour course in Personal Leadership Development during most of his tenure at the university.
He remains an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Tempe,which he joined in February 1981,and served as president of the club from 1986 to 1987. [6] He also served as president of Tempe Leadership and on numerous non-profit boards of directors including the Tempe Community Council,Big Brothers-Big Sisters and the Friends of the Tempe Center for the Arts.[ citation needed ] He currently serves on the board of director for the Valley of the Sun United Way and was a founding member of the Friends of Tempe Center for the Arts board of directors. He currently serves on the board of directors for The Partnership for Economic Innovation,Valley of the Sun United Way and Visit Phoenix.
Giuliano began his political career as a city council member,elected in May 1990,and was appointed vice-mayor of Tempe,Arizona for 1992–94. [2] He was elected mayor of Tempe four times,serving from 1994 to 2004;the first three terms were two-years each,the fourth was for four years. [2] After he first came out as gay in August 1996,political opponents tried to initiate a recall election to remove him from office,but that effort failed. Following a controversy over city funds being directed to the Boy Scouts of America in 2000,a successful recall effort proceeded to the ballot. [7] The recall election was held on September 11,2001. Giuliano won in a landslide,defeating a campaign that was called "blatantly homophobic". [8]
He also co-chaired the planning the third debate of the 2004 United States presidential elections. [9] Upon retiring from elected office in 2004 and a 24-year career at Arizona State University in 2005,where he served as director of federal relations among other positions,Giuliano received praise from Senator John McCain and then-Governor Janet Napolitano.[ citation needed ] In 2008,Giuliano changed his registration from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party and The Arizona Republic reported that he has considered running for governor of Arizona in 2010 as a Democrat but he declined to run. [10] In 2014,it was again speculated that he would run for governor,but he instead endorsed Fred DuVal for the Democratic nomination. [11]
Giuliano served as president of the Gay &Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD),a national LGBT organization dedicated to ensuring fair,accurate and inclusive representation of LGBT people and events in the media,from 2005 to 2009. [2] He initiated LGBT media advocacy programs and awareness in the areas of sports,advertising and religion/faith/values,helping bridge the divide about LGBT issues in these critical communities. During his tenure the GLAAD Media Awards were first broadcast on the BRAVO Network,reaching over 80 million homes with LGBT affirming messages.
Giuliano was featured on CBS Sunday Morning in 1999 and has appeared on CNN,ABC World News Tonight,Showbiz Tonight,and Access Hollywood. He has been quoted in Newsweek,TIME,USA Today and numerous state and regional media outlets discussing LGBT images in the media and issues as well as the state of HIV/AIDS in the United States. [12]
Giuliano was named one of the Top 25 of 2005 by Instinct Magazine . [13] In 2004,he received the Individual Achievement Award from the Arizona Human Rights Fund. [14] He was named to the OUT 100 by OUT Magazine,which notes the top 100 people in gay culture in the US. [13] While he was mayor in 2003,Tempe was named an "All American-City," an award honoring local governments demonstrating success in problem solving. [3] He was named Tempe Humanitarian of the year in 2014 and among the Most Admired Leaders of the Phoenix region in 2017 by the Phoenix Business Journal. In 2018 he received the highest recognition for leadership and community service when selected as the 69th Man of the Year. Former US Senator Barry Goldwater was the first recipient of the award in 1949.

Janet Jackson is an American pop and R&B singer and actress. Jackson garnered a substantial gay following during the 1990s as she gained prominence in popular music. Recognized as a long-term ally of the LGBTQ community,Jackson received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Album for her Grammy Award-winning sixth studio album The Velvet Rope (1997),which spoke out against homophobia and embraced same-sex love. In 2005,Jackson received the Humanitarian Award from the Human Rights Campaign and AIDS Project Los Angeles in recognition of her involvement in raising funds for AIDS Charities and received the Vanguard Award at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2008. In June 2012,Jackson announced she was executive producing a documentary on the lives of transgender people around the world titled Truth,saying she agreed to sign on to help stop discrimination against the transgender community.
Outrage is a 2009 American documentary film written and directed by Kirby Dick. The film presents a narrative discussing the hypocrisy of people purported in the documentary to be closeted gay or bisexual politicians who promote anti-gay legislation. It premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival before being released theatrically on May 8,2009. It was nominated for a 2010 Emmy Award,and won Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival's jury award for best documentary. The documentary's prime subject was Michael Rogers,founder of BlogActive.com.
Historically,the portrayal of lesbian,gay,bisexual,transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in media has been largely negative if not altogether absent,reflecting a general cultural intolerance of LGBTQ individuals;however,from the 1990s to present day,there has been an increase in the positive depictions of LGBTQ people,issues,and concerns within mainstream media in North America. The LGBTQ communities have taken an increasingly proactive stand in defining their own culture,with a primary goal of achieving an affirmative visibility in mainstream media. The positive portrayal or increased presence of the LGBTQ communities in media has served to increase acceptance and support for LGBT communities,establish LGBTQ communities as a norm,and provide information on the topic.
John Michael Durnil served as the Executive Director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee from March of 2021 until his retirement in November of 2022. From December 2010 to February 2021,he was President and CEO of the Simon Youth Foundation (SYF). Durnil is the former Senior Vice President and Interim President of the Gay &Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD),and the former Executive Vice President for Governmental Affairs &University Outreach and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees at Roosevelt University in Chicago,Illinois. He has been nationally recognized for his service in the field of higher education and for his advocacy of LGBT rights. Durnil serves on the executive board of the American Council on Education Council of Fellows. Durnil is also an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of the International Order of DeMolay.
Henry A. "Hank" Plante is an American television reporter and newspaper columnist. Winner of the George Foster Peabody Award and multiple Emmys,he covered California for three decades for TV stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He now writes occasional columns for newspapers in California,usually focusing on politics or gay and lesbian issues. One of the first openly gay TV reporters in the United States,Plante is the recipient of various honors from LGBT rights advocacy organizations and trade groups. In addition,Plante was featured in the documentary "5B" 5B (film),which was honored at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The film is about the first AIDS ward in the nation,which Plante covered as a reporter. In 2023 Hank was named a "USC Fellow" as part of the USC Center for the Political Future.

Javier Gonzales was an American politician who served as the 42nd mayor of Santa Fe from 2014 to 2018. Gonzales was the city's first and only openly gay mayor. The National LGBTQ Wall of Honor is a memorial wall in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City,dedicated to LGBTQ "pioneers,trailblazers,and heroes". Located inside the Stonewall Inn,the wall is part of the Stonewall National Monument,the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to the country's LGBTQ rights and history. The first fifty inductees were unveiled June 27,2019,as a part of events marking the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Five honorees are added annually.
