Janet Jackson is an American pop and R&B singer and actress. Jackson garnered a substantial gay following during the 1990s as she gained prominence in popular music. Recognized as a long-term ally of the LGBTQ community,Jackson received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Album for her Grammy Award-winning sixth studio album The Velvet Rope (1997),which spoke out against homophobia and embraced same-sex love. In 2005,Jackson received the Humanitarian Award from the Human Rights Campaign and AIDS Project Los Angeles in recognition of her involvement in raising funds for AIDS Charities and received the Vanguard Award at the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in 2008. In June 2012,Jackson announced she was executive producing a documentary on the lives of transgender people around the world titled Truth,saying she agreed to sign on to help stop discrimination against the transgender community.
Outrage is a 2009 American documentary film written and directed by Kirby Dick. The film presents a narrative discussing the hypocrisy of people purported in the documentary to be closeted gay or bisexual politicians who promote anti-gay legislation. It premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival before being released theatrically on May 8,2009. It was nominated for a 2010 Emmy Award,and won Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival's jury award for best documentary. The documentary's prime subject was Michael Rogers,founder of BlogActive.com.
Historically,the portrayal of lesbian,gay,bisexual,transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in media has been largely negative if not altogether absent,reflecting a general cultural intolerance of LGBTQ individuals;however,from the 1990s to present day,there has been an increase in the positive depictions of LGBTQ people,issues,and concerns within mainstream media in North America. The LGBTQ communities have taken an increasingly proactive stand in defining their own culture,with a primary goal of achieving an affirmative visibility in mainstream media. The positive portrayal or increased presence of the LGBTQ communities in media has served to increase acceptance and support for LGBT communities,establish LGBTQ communities as a norm,and provide information on the topic.
John Michael Durnil served as the Executive Director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee from March of 2021 until his retirement in November of 2022. From December 2010 to February 2021,he was President and CEO of the Simon Youth Foundation (SYF). Durnil is the former Senior Vice President and Interim President of the Gay &Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD),and the former Executive Vice President for Governmental Affairs &University Outreach and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees at Roosevelt University in Chicago,Illinois. He has been nationally recognized for his service in the field of higher education and for his advocacy of LGBT rights. Durnil serves on the executive board of the American Council on Education Council of Fellows. Durnil is also an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church and a member of the International Order of DeMolay.
Henry A. "Hank" Plante is an American television reporter and newspaper columnist. Winner of the George Foster Peabody Award and multiple Emmys,he covered California for three decades for TV stations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He now writes occasional columns for newspapers in California,usually focusing on politics or gay and lesbian issues. One of the first openly gay TV reporters in the United States,Plante is the recipient of various honors from LGBT rights advocacy organizations and trade groups. In addition,Plante was featured in the documentary "5B" 5B (film),which was honored at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The film is about the first AIDS ward in the nation,which Plante covered as a reporter. In 2023 Hank was named a "USC Fellow" as part of the USC Center for the Political Future.

He held the office of Santa Fe County Commissioner,serving two terms. Soon after,he was elected as the first Hispanic president to the National Association of Counties. Upon assuming the mayorship of Santa Fe,he was chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.

The National LGBTQ Wall of Honor is a memorial wall in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City,dedicated to LGBTQ "pioneers,trailblazers,and heroes". Located inside the Stonewall Inn,the wall is part of the Stonewall National Monument,the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to the country's LGBTQ rights and history. The first fifty inductees were unveiled June 27,2019,as a part of events marking the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Five honorees are added annually.
