Neil Scales OBE is a former British-Australian public servant. He was the Director-General of the Department of Transport &Main Roads,in Queensland having assumed the office in 2013,and serving until June 2023.
Between 1999 and 2012,Scales was Chief Executive Officer and Director-General of Merseytravel in Liverpool. [1]
Scales resigned from Merseytravel in December 2011,to take up an appointment in the Queensland Public Sector. [2] [3] He joined TransLink in Brisbane,Australia,in March 2012 as Chief Executive Officer. [4]
In March 2013,Scales was appointed Director-General of the Queensland Department of Transport &Main Roads. He retired in 2023. [5]
Scales was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to transport. [5]

Merseyrail is a metro railway system serving the Liverpool City Region and adjacent areas of Cheshire and Lancashire. Merseyrail operates 66 railway stations across two lines –the Northern Line and the Wirral Line,which are dedicated 750 V DC third rail electrified lines converging into underground sections in the centres of Liverpool and Birkenhead. Merseyrail branding is also applied to stations and ticketing on the City Line,which are within the Liverpool City Region but operated by other train operating companies,predominantly Northern Trains. The City Line services operate on the Liverpool to Manchester Lines and the Liverpool to Wigan Line using a mix of AC electric and diesel trains.

From 1 April 2014,with the creation of the Liverpool City Region,Merseytravel expanded its area of operation from the metropolitan county of Merseyside to also include the Borough of Halton.

Merseytram was a proposed light rail system for Merseyside,England. Originally proposed in 2001,forming part of the Merseyside Local Transport Plan,it was to consist of three lines,connecting the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley with central Liverpool. The project was postponed due to funding problems before eventually being formally closed down by Merseytravel in October 2013.
The British Rail Class 507 is a type of electric multiple unit (EMU) passenger train built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Holgate Road carriage works in two batches from 1978 to 1980. They were the second variety of British Rail's standard 1972 design for suburban EMUs derived from PEP stock,which eventually encompassed 755 vehicles over five classes. They have worked on the Merseyrail network from new and continue to do so,having been refurbished by Alstom's Eastleigh Works. The Class 507 units are all now at least 42 years old,and,following the withdrawal of the Class 313 fleet in 2023,are the oldest units operating on the mainline rail network in Great Britain. However,the even older 1972 Stock and 1973 Stock are still in service on London Underground.
Liverpool South Parkway station,is a railway station and bus interchange in the Garston district of Liverpool,England. It serves,via a bus link,Liverpool John Lennon Airport in the neighbouring suburb of Speke,as well as providing an interchange between main line services and the Merseyrail rapid transit/commuter rail network.
The Wirral line is one of two commuter rail routes operated by Merseyrail and centred on Merseyside,England,the other being the Northern line.
The Canada Dock Branch is a 4-mile 59 chain long railway line in Liverpool,England. The line's route is from the large Edge Hill rail junction in the east of Liverpool to Seaforth Dock to the north. The line was originally built by the London and North Western Railway terminating at Canada Dock,with a later branch extension added to Alexandra Dock and links onto the MDHC railway lines. The line is not electrified.
The Skelmersdale branch was a standard gauge railway (SKE) which connected the Liverpool,Ormskirk and Preston Railway at Ormskirk with Rainford Junction via Skelmersdale. At Rainford it connected with the Liverpool and Bury Railway and the St. Helens Railway. It was built by the East Lancashire Railway,which was taken over by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway shortly afterward. The steam railmotor which served the line was sometimes known locally as the "Skem Dodger" and other times as the "Skem Jazzer".
Skelmersdale railway station was a station located on the Skelmersdale branch at Skelmersdale,England. The station was originally named Blague Gate,having its name changed to Skelmersdale on 8 August 1874 and carried passengers from 1858 to 1956.

The British Rail Class 777 METRO is a class of electric multiple unit passenger trains currently under construction by Swiss rolling stock manufacturer Stadler Rail,being used on the Merseyrail network in the Liverpool City Region and adjacent areas of Cheshire and Lancashire. Ordered in 2016,construction of the units began in 2018. The first unit entered service on 23 January 2023,following delays to the deployment programme. The Class 777 will replace Merseyrail's current Class 507 and Class 508 units,which were built between 1978 and 1980. Seven units of the total 53 ordered are being configured as battery electric multiple units (BEMUs) for use on non-electrified lines,and will be designated subclass 777/1.
