He was born in Marston Moretaine,Bedfordshire and was educated at Clifton College and played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Kent County Cricket Club. He also played six Test matches for England. His career lasted from 1869 to 1886.

He was well-regarded for the grace of his batting,but his cricket career was limited by both hay fever and his overseas work commitments.

Capable of hitting the ball powerfully,he combined an excellent eye with an unorthodox style to be regarded at his peak as one of England's finest batsmen.
John Drennan Eggar was an English schoolmaster and first-class cricketer who played for Oxford University and Hampshire in 1938 and for Derbyshire from 1946 to 1954. His career as a schoolmaster began in 1938,with his appointment to Repton School. He spent 25 years at Repton,before being appointed headmaster at the newly established Shiplake College,where he oversaw an increase in the number of enrolled pupils and the expansion of the school.
John Wemyss"Jake" Seamer was an amateur cricketer who played for Oxford University and Somerset either side of the Second World War. A bespectacled cricketer,Seamer was a right-handed batsman who played with a defensive streak to his game which was rarely seen among amateur batsmen of his time. He was described as a leg break googly bowler,but in truth he rarely bowled at all,and claimed just four first-class wickets.
Claude Thesiger Ashton was an English amateur footballer and first-class cricketer. As footballer he played for Corinthians in several different positions including goalkeeper and centre forward,although his preferred position was wing-half. He made one appearance for the England national team in 1925 when he was appointed team captain. As a cricketer he played for Cambridge University and Essex. A pre-war officer of the Auxiliary Air Force,he died as a result of a mid-air collision in a training accident in the Second World War.

The Magdalen Ground was a cricket ground in Oxford,England. The ground was owned by the University of Oxford and used by Magdalen College,a constituent college of the University of Oxford. Originally forming the northern point of Cowley Marsh,the ground was initially associated with the Magdalen College School,whose students played cricket there. By 1829,the Oxford University Cricket Club had been given a part of the marsh where the College School played cricket. In 1851,it was purchased at auction by the University of Oxford and leased to the University Cricket Club. The ground operated as a first-class cricket venue from 1829 to 1880,hosting 69 first-class matches. The University Cricket Club left the ground following the 1880 season to play at the University Parks from 1881.

Privately owned,it was the preferred venue in Oxford for matches where a gated admission was to be levied on spectators,typically in matches between Oxford University and a touring international team. The ground was a first-class cricket venue from 1878 to 1961,hosting 37 first-class matches. After 1961,the University Parks became the preferred venue for all first-class matches in Oxford,but it remained in use in minor counties and one-day cricket by Oxfordshire until the start of the 21st century and hosted a Women's One Day International during the 1993 Women's Cricket World Cup.
